• Hi Guest,

We've updated the site to combine all the forums that were part of the Big Sky Fans Network into one location. This will make it easier to navigate and participate in all the discussions for each school without having to have multiple accounts, etc. We are still working out some tweaks but please let us know if you notice anything.

With the migration, in some circumstances, your username could have been merged with one of your other usernames from the other forums. If this is the case, you can request to change your username in your account details page of your profile.

2020-2021 MBB Season

Finally some Hornet sports being played. The men opened up at home against Idaho and looked really good and are 3-0 on the young season. It's very early and no telling if this season even gets played in its totality, but this is probably the most athletic roster top to bottom of our D1 history. The new additions really brought some swagger with them.

After a tune up win against non-D1 Bethesda, the Hornets had a stellar run in the 2nd half of the first Idaho game to win 77-55. Hornets followed it up with a dominating win 2 days later, 73-57.

Idaho was awful last season but they are recruiting into a new arena that is currently under construction and have some size on their roster. The Hornets just out hustled and out played them in both games. Besides the athleticism, the Hornets look a lot better shooting the 3 ball and have put up solid numbers from the charity stripe as well. Should be an interesting season.

Interesting that Idaho had Wazzu on the ropes in Pullman last night!

Watched an earlier Washington State game. I don’t think they could win the Big Sky. They made Idaho look better than they are. They are not as bad as we made them look. I think they will probably finish last in the conference but should win a few games. NAU and Idaho State look like they will struggle. Of course so have Duke and Kentucky so who knows about this season.

You can watch the Hornets on the WCC network at 2pm tomorrow vs Santa Clara. Here is info on the website:

After watching every game, this is my analysis so far this season.

The team has a lot of switchable players this year. Maybe the most versatile team ever under Katz
Pros:
Tremendous depth (I would say this team is 9 deep if not 10)
Experienced back-court
Fowler is very versatile and when he makes his shots, the team does well (more on this later because he often doesn't make his shots and his efficiency level is extremely low for someone who plays a lot minutes)
Brandon Davis is finally willing (and able) to shoot the 3 ball to prevent teams from collapsing too much E Esposito
Big fan of Samaad Hector's game. Under sized PF but he rebounds relentlessly and shoots the three. He's the perfect role player, especially someone you ask to guard the other teams' bigs which are often at least 2-3 inches taller
I love the grittiness Deshaun Highler and the consistency of William Fitzpatrick.

Cons:
Often, players tries to play hero ball too much (especially Bryce Flower, there would be 5 mins span of games where BF would dribble and dribble and go for fade-away on double/triple teams with no intention of passing the ball. His assists number for someone who handles the ball is not good, to simply put it that way) which is disappointing because he is a senior with 4 years under his belt. E Esposito does this from game to game too, but scores a little bit more efficiently than BF.
The team goes in scoring droughts when this happen
Doesn't take advantage of the depth
Even with Samaad Hector relentlessly rebounding, E Esposito and David Jones in the low block, the team is often outmatched vertically. This happens a lot at this level because 6-8+ difference makers are a rare commodity of the mid major level. We lucked out with 4 years of Big Stutteville.

The Hornets (8-12, 5-10 BSC) got bounced from the BSCT in the first game this year as the season mercifully came to an end. The Hornets closed the season by losing 6 of the last 7.

This season was hard to follow given all the scheduling changes due to the pandemic. I caught about a half dozen games and my early season optimism was rapidly squelched as the quality of play diminished as the season progressed. The BSCT loss against Northern Colorado was the best offensive game of the year, and you have to wonder where that shooting was the rest of the year.

This was probably the most athletic roster top to bottom Katz was able to assemble yet nothing was done to take advantage of it on the court. Katz will have his work cut out for him given what is likely departing from the roster this off-season.
