With the annual dumpster fire called basketball coming to a close, it is nice to see baseball starts on Feb. 14.

Should be another stellar year. Hope we picked up some heavy hitters in the offseason, seemed like that was our weak spot last year.
 
Huge turnout at the Diamond Dinner last week as this should be an interesting year. The Hornets return a lot but had most of their coaching staff poached following Regionals last season. Solid and deep pitching combined with timely hitting seemed to be the trick last season. Personally I would be cool with seeing more small ball and solid pitching, although I don't think this roster has the speed to really challenge on the bases.

The schedule is kind of odd. A huge home-stand followed but a huge road trip before getting into WAC play. Opening pitch is Feb 14th.
 
Baseball is off to a 5-2 start.

Opening series had great turnout and the Hornets won the opener, 6-1 over UCSB. Unfortunately the Hornets lost 1-0 in 11 in the 2nd game, and lost 4-2 in the third game. The Hornets left 21 runners on base in the two losses.

The Hornets rebounded with a 4 game sweep over UW Milwaukee this past weekend.
Thursday: 9-3 win. A solid start by true freshman Carter Morris as the Hornet bats came alive.
Friday: 4-0 win. Brahms goes 6 innings and k's 10 to become the all-time Hornet leader in strikeouts. Brady Rodrigues pitched a 3 inning save as the Hornet bats came through in clutch situations.
Saturday: 8-1 win. Randall goes 7 innings and only allows 1 run on 5 hits with 6 k's and no walks. The Hornet offense put up 8 runs on 13 hits with 4 stolen bags.
Sunday: 3-2 win. Freshman SS Jorge Bojorques gets his first HR as the Hornets are patient at the plate and scratch out a win. Hornet pitchers were able to work out of a few crucial jams to keep it close.

Hornets (5-2) host Santa Clara (6-3) for a 4 game series this Thursday - Sunday. They have a win over Stanford under their belt so far this season, but are coming into this series having dropped 3 of 4 at 5th ranked Georgia. Should be a tough series for the Hornets.
 
Hornets (7-4) split a 4 game series with Santa Clara (8-5).

Thursday: 5-6 loss. Hornet pitching couldn't come through in clutch situations and a 9th inning rally fell short as the Hornets end the game with runners on the corners.

Friday: 2-4 loss. Hornets bats were kept quiet as Walstad's early 2 run shot was the only scoring on the night and the Hornet bullpen couldn't maintain a late 1 run lead as an excellent showing by Brahms (no earned runs, no walks, 8 k's over 6 innings) was wasted.

Saturday: 6-3 win. A 5 run 6th inning buried the Broncos. Randall went 6 strong innings and Churby got his 1st save of the year to get Christiansen his 300th win.

Sunday: 6-1 win. Hornet bats come alive as Torres knocked an early 2 run HR and Matt Smith's 2 run shot in the 5th put the game out of reach. Travis Adams picks up the win by scattering 9 hits over 7 innings and only giving up 1 run.

Hornets host Pacific (6-5) Tuesday night. A couple of wins in the opening series against Cal Baptist seem to be their most impressive so far.
 
Hornets (8-4) win big, 9-2, over Pacific (7-6) last night. Hornet bats got live as HRs by Bojorguez, Bacho, and Dorraugh put the game out of reach early. Freshman pitcher Eli Saul gets his first win as 6 Hornet pitchers keep the Tigers out of scoring position until the 8th.

Hornets have a weekend series at UC Irvine (6-6). UCI has a very tough schedule with impressive wins against Fresno State, Washington and USC. This will be a big test for the Hornets.
 
Hornets (9-6) had stellar pitching over the weekend, unfortunately they only got run support in one of the three games at UC Irvine (8-7). 

Friday: 0-2 loss. Hornets lose a pitching duel as Brahms gets 7 k's in 6 innings but had 2 earned runs. Hornets only managed 5 base hits and left 6 runners on base.
Saturday: 2-3 loss. 2 early runs from a two out Bacho double weren't enough as the Anteaters chopped away at the lead. Randall gave up 3 runs on 6 hits, 7 k's in 6.2 innings.
Sunday: 8-0 win. Hornets bats wake up as the Hornets score 8 runs on 13 hits. Moretto had a HR and 3 RBIs. Travis Adams pitched a gem as he gave up 0 runs, 2 hits and had 7 k's in 7 innings of work.

Hornets have a weekday game at San Francisco (8-8) tomorrow afternoon. USF has some wins over Fullerton earlier in the year and just took 2 of 3 from Cal this past weekend. USF always seems to have the Hornets number, we'll see how things go tomorrow.
 
Hornets (9-7) get smoked by USF (9-8), 12-4. Hornet pitching gave up 12 runs on 16 hits with Eli Saul taking the loss. The Hornet offense was fairly quiet, but Bacho had a 2 run HR in the 7th.

Hornets head to Nevada (2-11) for a weekend series in Reno. The Wolfpack got their first wins of the season against Cal Baptist last weekend. Hornets need to win this series.
 
And baseball season comes to a close in March. Hornets finish with a winning record of 9-8.
