Another season of Hornet baseball is upon us. I am not too sure how this team will be this season as I think the Hornets are a few arms and bats short from contending for a WAC title. However Christiansen has built the strongest and most resilient program on campus so I expect this team to be competitive and win lots of games. The addition of standout pitching coach Jon Wente from GCU was a notable hire that should be a major boost for the development of the young Hornet pitchers on the roster. The Hornets were picked to finish 2nd in the west behind Grand Canyon and ahead of Cal Baptist.

The season started a couple weeks ago against North Dakota State. The Hornets took 3 of four from the defending Summit League regular season champions.

Friday: 5-3 win. Hornet bats open the season with 3 runs in the first and get 7 Ks and 1 earned run in 5 innings from Takacs. Vincelli-Samard and Rolling both had 2 RBIs.
Saturday: 8-6 win. Hornets rally from a 5-1 deficit in the 5th behind 2 RBI double from Valero and a 2 run HR from Heard to tie it. A pair of double from Bojorquez and Aloy put the Hornets ahead later in the game as the Hornet bullpen shuts down the Bison. Gibbons earned his first win on the year and Zalasky picked up his first save.
Sunday, Game 1: 3-2 win. Hornets score some runs early and scratch out a close one behind a strong start by Lucchesi to pick up his first Hornet win. The Hornet bullpen was perfect and was closed out by Zalasky for his 2nd save on the year.
Sunday, Game 2: 4-13 loss. Hornets battle back from an early deficit but the Hornet bullpen implodes as the Bison bats come alive.

Last weekend the Hornets swept St. Thomas in a weather shortened series.

Saturday, Game 1: 2-0 win. Hornets cobble together a couple of runs on a passed ball and later on a solo HR by Aloy. Takacs dominated and only allowed 1 hit over 7 innings with 7 Ks as Zalasky closed the door for his 3rd save.
Saturday, Game 2: 10-1 win. Hornet bats erupt as the Hornets jumped on the Tommie pitching early to put this game out of reach. Aloy stayed hot at the plate with a 3 run HR in the 2nd. Blatnick and Malone both had 2 RBI on the day. Lucchesi picked up his 2nd win with a strong 5.2 inning outing as the Hornet bullpen followed up with a flawless outing.
Thursday, 9-4 win. Hornets finally get a win over Nevada as they rally from an early deficit. Rolling and Crenshaw had solo HRs in the 3rd inning that set the tone for the rest of the game. Vincelli-Samard and Aloy both had 2 RBI and the Hornet pitching kept the Wolfpack in check.

The Hornets (6-1) will now play 10 games in 9 days starting with the Southern California College Baseball Classic this weekend in LA.

Late to the party with this post but baseball had a strong finish to keep the 30 win streak alive. The Hornets won their last 5 games of the regular season to finish 30-26 (14-16 WAC). Hornets had some amazing bats and if the pitching didn't have a rash of injuries, could have been an interesting season otherwise.

The bad news is WAC Freshman of the Year Wehiwa Aloy (.376, 14 HR, 46 RBI) is leaving to get SEC money at Arkansas.

Good news is there are a lot of talented young players that return (assuming they aren't poached as well). If the Hornets can have some pitcher step up, 2024 could be an entertaining year.

That's unfortunate for us, but great for Heard. He had a stellar year. Also Tackacs was signed by the Pirates so that is one less pitcher for us. Oh well, in Christiansen we trust.
