• Hi Guest,

We've updated the site to combine all the forums that were part of the Big Sky Fans Network into one location. This will make it easier to navigate and participate in all the discussions for each school without having to have multiple accounts, etc. We are still working out some tweaks but please let us know if you notice anything.

With the migration, in some circumstances, your username could have been merged with one of your other usernames from the other forums. If this is the case, you can request to change your username in your account details page of your profile.

This was a great opening match! A confidence booster that gave the team a chance to work together, get out the butterflies, and introduce the freshmen to college soccer. That said, they had better expect a different brand of soccer when they hit New Mexico on Friday. New Mexico may well be their toughest pre-season opponent and the freshmen and veterans will be severely tested in that game.

This should be a fun team for the fans to follow this year. Offensively, they showed they can work together and we should see some real excitement. With 11 of the 15 field players posting shots today, they showed that any player on the field is a potential offensive threat. Let these ladies develop a little confidence, and they could be a formidable force in the conference. It will be great to watch this team mature together during the season.

I was extremely impressed by the freshmen in this game. Ashley Jones played a confident midfield game with the poise of a veteran. Her goal may be what got everyone’s attention, but her aggressiveness on the field, her precision passes, and her leadership may put her in contention for conference newcomer of the year award (if she can keep up the effort from today.) Rachel Strawn may well earn herself a starting role early in the season if she keeps up her aggressive attacking style. Laura Perez made certain NNW felt her presence. Morgan Olsen played a full 90 minutes of defense with the maturity of a veteran. (She got no mention in any of the news articles… but she will need to get used to it if she is going to play defense for this team. No stats… no glory!) Not only did Morgan show superb stopping ability, she was key in generating several offensive attacks. Alishia Cairl got herself involved in several strong offense attacks. Shauna Fleming, Michelle Buhrle and Shailee Smith all got some quality minutes and showed they have the ability to contribute more in the upcoming season. I had been worried about how this freshmen class might pan out. After today, I am cautiously optimistic that ISU will both win the Governor’s Cup and qualify for the Big Sky Tournament.

The veterans came out strong. I particularly felt that Kacey Ball and Christina Beseris have both made significant improvement over the off-season and that both will play a crucial role in this year’s success. Lauren Ryan and Alex Hansen both looked strong at the forward position. AnnaMarie Hofstetter showed leadership in the middle, and if she puts her focus on passing, could set a career record for assists (particularly given the offensive support it looks like she may get this year. Karissa Henage and Megan Stainbrook showed the same defensive stature we have become accustomed to… not just stopping offensive threats, but controlling the pace in the back to keep those threats from developing. Both Bailey Williams and Kat Ford looked strong in the goal. Although Bailey will most likely start in the goal, Kat has shown that the Bengals can be confident in their keeper, even if the starter goes down.

The most discouraging aspect of he game was the injuries. It is a tremendous blow to the team to have lost Ashley Askwig for the season. But we will also miss both Taylor Powell and Benecia Brogan for an extended period while they recover from serious injuries. Lauren Hough was missed for this one game, and it will be nice to have her back by Friday. Plus we had two freshmen out: Krisha Read and Amber Worthen. When you only have 23 players on the roster, it is pretty painful to have 6 of them out with injuries (over 25% of the team.) At least Coach Gibson will have little difficulty determining which 18 to take on this next road trip: the 17 who played today, plus Lauren Hough (who will be ready for action.) Recognize that there were as many players not suiting up today as we had available for substitution.

Given the shortage of experienced players and the talent of their opponent, if this team could scratch out a win (or even a tie) on Friday, they may well establish themselves as a force in the Sky this year. Worst case, they come home from this road trip with a 1-1 record after playing NMSU of the WAC on Sunday. Again, congrats Bengals on a great start and good luck this weekend.

Just a point of order, but on the broadcast we lavished tons of praise on Morgan, and she probably was the best freshman on the field yesterday, and really, not a single scoring chance came from her side of the field. I liked how she knew when to make a run offensively as well. I was amazed at her poise, more so than Jones, who was stellar even without the goal. We talked about the fact that you sort of forgot that Lauren Hough wasn't out there...she was that good in the back.

For about the final 30 minutes or so, right after the Jones goal, ISU played with seven freshman, plus a goalkeeper that had three career games to her credit, and ISU played well in that configuration.

ISUSID -Thanks for your input. Great comments.

Is there a way to access the broadcast after the fact? Those of us at the game miss the broadcast, but it would be fun to go back and listen to it later.

All of the games should be archived....just click the microphone on the main front page, and click for the archive....the NNU game hasn't been archived yet (they are usually a little slow early in the year) ... but yes, they all get archived, and all of last year's games are there, and you can purchase games on CD for $15.95 apiece as well.
