We've updated the site to combine all the forums that were part of the Big Sky Fans Network into one location. This will make it easier to navigate and participate in all the discussions for each school without having to have multiple accounts, etc. We are still working out some tweaks but please let us know if you notice anything.

Did contemporaries Freeman Williams

Freeman-Williams2.jpg
lomax_95portrait.jpg

and Neil Lomax ever hang out together?

They certainly weren't the same age. Freeman Williams was born in 1956 and Neil Lomax in 1959. But they crossed paths at Portland State during 1977-1978. That is what meaning is intended by "contemporaries": The year when two of Portland State's greatest athletes were there playing at the same time.

Freeman Williams
Season MP FG FGA FG% FT FTA FT% TRB PF PTS
1974-75 26 7.2 16.7 .428 2.5 3.1 .790 3.4 2.3 16.8
1975-76 27 13.2 28.9 .456 4.5 5.7 .787 4.1 2.5 30.9
1976-77 26 16.0 32.2 .498 6.8 8.5 .796 4.8 2.3 38.8
1977-78 27 15.2 32.3 .470 5.5 7.1 .780 4.9 2.3 35.9

Neil Lomax
1977: 102/181 for 1,670 yards with 18 TD vs 5 INT
1978: 241/436 for 3,506 yards with 26 TD vs 22 INT
1979: 299/516 for 3,950 yards with 26 TD vs 16 INT
1980: 296/473 for 4,094 yards with 37 TD vs 12 INT

1977-78 was quite a year.

That a relative of Bruce Barnum served as one inspiration, Charlie Chan another,

Tim Walsh and Tyler Geving did just enough

Tim_Walsh_Army.jpg
Tyler_Geving_Mens_Basketball_coach_at_Portland_State_50367.jpg

to keep their jobs for as long as they could without actually improving their programs,
taking advantage, knowing they'd be covered because of the programs' funding challenges?

And why were they hired? Tyler Geving was to Ken Bone as Joel Sobotka was to Ritchie McKay. And Randy Nordloff decided that since Tim Walsh's Sonoma State Cossacks beat Pokey Allen's Portland State Vikings in a single outcome, that that alone was sufficient reason. Both specious reasons and not Burman Class Hiring Decisions. The hope was the Bone Era would continue under Geving because he was a "players' coach." Walsh is now pulling the same antic-strategy at Cal Poly.

I still believe Tyler Geving can become a well-placed assistant coach after head coaching here.

If Portland had gotten behind Mouse Davis back in the latter '70's

davis-mouse-football-special-for-the-denver-postdenver-gold-coach-picture-id162378331

by getting him the funding he needed to hire a DC as good as he was an OC, might we have built a fine program at Portland State decades ahead of time? Portland, however, remained silent and indifferent. Mouse Davis had no choice but to move on to become the OC of the Cal Bears. If he had been supported and successful here, could Portland State have become the best team in Oregon for some time? Would Oregon or Oregon State have perhaps hired him away?

He wanted to give Portland a great college football team.

If Bobby Kennedy had not been murdered and had gotten elected president in 1968 that Portland State would have prospered much beyond even what we have today?

Within the South Park Blocks are statues dedicated to the memories of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. Might there be one also on PSU's SPB Campus Mall dedicated to the memory of Robert F. Kennedy? Might this be appropriate for PSU? He was much beloved by Portland State students. His image would be a lasting tribute.

That the Vue building will finally undergo Eminent Domain by Mayor Ted Wheeler and the City of Portland to force its sale to Portland State University at fair market value. And, that way, Portland State will, at long last, attain possession of that appropriate structure long-held on the PSU campus that fittingly belongs to PSU.

If there are nicknames for Portland, such as

City of Roses
Bridgetown
Little Beirut
Rip City
Stumptown

Could not these names also be playfully applied to Portland State to become the basis for a whole new line of Bookstore apparel? I especially feel some affectionate attraction to the nicknames:

Bridgetown State

Rip City State

Probably make some pretty dynamite t-shirts.

When at the UO, we had something called "The Cultural Forum," which was an office at the EMU (the Student Union building) responsible for coordinating cultural events for, then, Mac Court. Now that April, 2018 marks the date for the opening of the new Stott Center and Viking Pavilion, it would be advantageous for Portland State to have such an office to schedule these important cultural events.

I think a great cultural event would be to schedule Lewis Black for a comedy show. He'll be 70 years old in 2018!

We can have all the good things the UO and OSU have, right here at Stumptown State. We can look forward to it and get some excitement generated. We can look to like-minded universities like Minnesota and see what they do.

Those who wish to donate to Portland State are sometimes motivated to do so because their name as donor will be memorialize on the campus beyond the number of the days of their lives. I suggest opportunities in which persons can donate to upgrade certain trouble spots to a level of dignity they've never known previously.

one-of-the-beautiful.jpg

200-S-Michigan-Image-17-480x323.jpg

For example, there are elevators in, I believe, Cramer, Smith and St. Helens that could each be upgraded to modern standards of dignity. I am not talking about cheap fixes with cheap features, but improvements to last the ages in a style that is classic and well-befitting those whom it memorializes.

s-l300.jpg

These donations, for instance, can even come in the form of direct materials, skilled craftsmanship and labor. Portland elevator crews may wish to donate their specialized expertise to the restoration and smart functioning as a means to make their heartfelt contribution. All this in the intended dignified style of Old Portland (somewhat captured by the spirit of the Old Spaghetti Factory).
