Big Sky Kickoff - Skyline Sports

Post by Colter_Nuanez5656 » July 10th, 2017, 8:18 pm

The Big Sky Conference will announce its preseason All-Big Sky football team and the results of the media and coaches' polls next Monday and Tuesday at the Big Sky Kickoff media conference in Park City, Utah. We will have full coverage from that event that will lead us into coverage from around the league leading up to the 2017 season.

In anticipation of those accolades, we will have our picks for the preseason offense, defense and the way we voted in the preseason poll with a breakdown of the league's composite schedule.

No Portland State players even mentioned. The snub has been noted... :thumb:

Colter *rarely* shows any respect - much less, love - for our program so not really very surprising. Remember that he introduced his group to us originally as being most interested in the "flagship schools" of MSU and UM

He highlighted Crecelius on the offensive team. But in general, Colter is the small-time equivalent of our Oregonian, covering only UO/OSU and the Pac-12; he covers MU/MSU and then the other "mountain" teams. The West Coast teams come in last. When we get back in the playoff crowd he'll pay more attention to our players.

I'm not going to wait that long. October 8, the day after we complete the Montana sweep (again, I might add), Colter, as well as other residents of "Big Sky Country" will have to join the Ducks and Beavers fans in noting that we have a damn fine team out here. :thumb:

Big Sky Conference Kickoff 2017: Oakland Raider defensive end James Cowser

Former Southern Utah defensive end James Cowser , the 2015 Big Sky Conference Defensive MVP and the FCS record holder in tackles for loss and sack in a career, gives an address at the 2017 Big Sky Conference Kickoff.
Cowser currently plays for the Oakland Raiders. In 6 games last season, he had 9 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.

If you are wondering what is going on at the beginning of this video, my brother Brooks Nuanez, who is co-founder of Skyline Sports, our director of operations and our senior photographer, played safety at Montana from 2009-2011. He played a year for Phenicie and Phen remembered Brooks. The beginning is them rehashing their Big Sky championship days at Montana.

While that's a fair criticism, let's also note the following:

Portland State: Blazers and Timbers and Pac-12.

Weber State: Jazz and U and Y.

Eastern Washington and Idaho: WSU and Gonzaga... and Boise State (a specific and not too kind swipe at Idaho's main alum base).

Idaho State: see Weber State given they're "only" 110 miles apart and Eastern Idaho clings more towards Utah anyway.

Sac State and Davis: Kings and Bay Area and Pac-12.

Cal Poly: ALL of California

Northern Arizona: Phoenix sports & Pac 12

North Dakota: UND Hockey... and one foot out of the conference anyway

Northern Colorado: Denver sports and CU and even CSU somehow

Southern Utah: Las Vegas theoretically... and U and Y.

So nobody in larger markets will be devoting dwindling resources to cover the conference and nobody in smaller markets has the resources to cover the expanse of this particular mess. Montana is a unique bubble, so you take what you get. Hence why I made some catty comment on an O-Live article about the writers conference picks cleaving quite tightly to last year's record, like it always does.

Not true. Go back and look at the coverage of EWU football the last few years as they were marching in the playoffs. Their coverage in the Spokane media was far more than even Wazzu and Zag basketball was getting in December. Weber gets a lot of ink from the Trib and the Deseret News (some football publications reprint the articles from the Deseret News when talking about the conference). The Bee does extensive coverage of both Sac State and Davis (and both of them have not had great seasons in awhile). NAU gets strong coverage from AZCentral.com (the website run by the Arizona Republic). There is coverage in the larger markets in the conference, look it up. OLive chooses to ignore all this and pretend we don't exist.

I got my own sources when I want to monitor conference news, which is why I get so disgusted at the paltry coverage of PSU in OLive (but it is getting better).
