Portland St./UC Davis Preview: Vikings are looking for the first win of 2017

https://www.oregonslocker.com/single-po ... in-of-2017

PORTLAND — The Vikings would like nothing better than too wrap up the nonconference schedule with a win against UC Davis at Providence Park on Saturday.

This is the home opener for Portland State (0-2) and will be the first game this season for the Vikings against a team from the Football Championship Subdivision.

PSU started the season with a 20-6 loss to BYU and followed it up with a 35-32 loss to Oregon State on September 2 in Corvallis.

The Vikings defense is allowing 27.5 points per game and is allowing opposing teams an average of 377 yards per contest through the first two games of the season.

The offense for PSU has shown that they can move the ball against the schools from the FBS. Vikings head coach Bruce Barnum’s offense is averaging 367.5 yards per game — 188.5 of which come from the ground game and 179 through the air.

Jalani Eason, a freshman quarterback from Junipero Serra High School in Los Angeles, has played a major factor for PSU.

Eason has completed 50 percent of his passes (27-of-54) for 298 yards and three scores. He also leads the team in rushing touchdowns (3) and ranks second in rushing yards (104).

The Aggies (0-1) enter the game coming off of a 38-17 loss to San Diego State last Saturday. Despite the loss, the offense showed an ability to move the ball down field with the passing game.

Jake Maier completed 19-of-24 passes for 258 yards with a pair of touchdowns and interceptions.

Kellan Doss, who was named to the All-Big Sky Second Team in 2016, picked up right where he left off last season by catching eight balls for 181 yards and a score against the Aztecs.

The rushing attack for UC Davis was far from an attack in the opener. The Aggies were only able to muster 57 yards on the ground and averaged 2.1 yards per rush.

Davond Dade and the Vikings defense will look to keep UC Davis in the same situation.

Dade, a 6-3 260 lb. senior defensive end, leads the team in tackles for loss (3) and has the only sack of the season for PSU.

UC Davis allowed 276 yards rushing against the Aztecs, so Barnum may be looking for Za’Quan Summers and Eason to toke the rock against the Aggies defense.

Summers has ran for a team-best 161 rushing yards, but has been unable to get into the endzone.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game can be viewed on Eleven Sports.

Davis also plays San Diego this weekend. Their numbers are skewed a bit after playing only one game against the FBS. I'm interested to see what they can do against a non-scholly. I think we'll know more of what they can stop and what they can't.

Anybody hear if Eason is going to be able to go this weekend? Any other news on injuries?

Heard Barnum on the coaches call last week. Eason will play, the issue in the OSU game was actually just dehydration. Garrett Stauffer will be back starting at Center and Semise Kofe and Sione Tamoe'anga are expected to play for the first time this year at DT. He also said we'd be getting a tight end back which I'm assuming is Loos as he played on the first game, but not the second (although I'm curious about Cole Ford as he's at the bottom of the depth chart, but has pretty good pedigree coming from UTEP) also Kennedy will start at kicker over Brosio.

Basically we're as healthy as anyone could hope for after two games.

After two FBS money games. Some of those money game are fun to watch, others are extremely painful. Like yesterday. The Weber/Cal game fun to watch (similar to our game with OSU). The Montana/Washington game, very painful, to the point of excruciating.

Thanks for the update. I was concerned that Eason's injury was more of a concussion as it looked like his head was run down into the turf. Glad to hear it was not.

I didn't realized that Adam Vinatieri's nephew kicked (and apparently can run) for South Dakota State.

Davond Dade (#99): Why you gotta be all ghetto and get that penalty and destroy your team's chance at winning this game?! You're a punk and hope you get the coach's reaming you deserve.

I had high hopes; however, this was simply pathetic.

Dang, that was disappointing. Fortunately not officially a Big Sky Conference game but still. So weird to see after such stellar performances against FBS teams and a bye week.

Nope, nope, nope. I'm a casual fan, but I try to watch a few games every season. After today's game, that's the end of the PSU season for me, though. I don't mind the L, but I don't want to spend my Saturdays watching something that looks like bad HS football. Just embarrassing and frustrating.
