Road to the NFL: Kyle Padron

Post by Screamin_Eagle174 » Mon Feb 18, 2013 10:59 pm

The NFL Draft is coming and hundreds of prospects are all trying to catch the eye of a general manager, scout, or coach. Between the Scouting Combine this month, the Regional Combines that started last month and will continue into March, as well as individually scheduled Pro Days, former college players are all doing everything they can to raise their draft stock and, hopefully, catch on with a team.

One of those prospects is Eastern Washington Eagles quarterback Kyle Padron, who is looking to make the jump from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision to the NFL...

Brandon Kaufman

Post by Screamin_Eagle174 » Wed Feb 20, 2013 10:10 pm

They updated Kauf's profile on NFL.com:
http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/bra ... id=2540191" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
OVERVIEW
Kaufman missed his senior high school season with a knee injury suffered before the 2008 season even began. He earned honorable mention All-State honors as a junior and twice was selected to the All-Continental League team. He caught a total of 97 passes for 1,918 yards and 16 touchdowns as a sophomore and junior. Just six months after his injury, he returned to play basketball.

As a freshman at Eastern Washington in 2009, Kaufman played in nine games and started five. He caught 23 passes for 294 yards and a touchdown. The following year, Kaufman burst onto the scene. He was selected to first team All-Big Sky Conference, and was selected as the NCAA Championship Subdivision Playoffs MVP by College Sporting News, thanks in part to his nine catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-19 win over Delaware in the FCS championship game. On the season, he totaled 76 catches for 1,214 yards and 15 touchdowns. After breaking a metacarpal in his left hand against Montana State, Kaufman redshirted as an injury hardship case after starting the first four games for the Eagles. He caught 29 passes for 373 yards and one touchdown. In 2012, he caught 93 passes for 1,850 and 16 touchdowns.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS
Tall with long arms. Uses his size to shield defenders, and his length to catch passes off his frame. Reliable hands. Tracks the football well and attacks the ball at the highest point. Red zone and vertical weapon. Possesses good vision after the catch.

WEAKNESSES
Hasn't dealt with great competition, or run a myriad of different routes. Doesn't explode off the line, and has build up speed. Needs to be more physical in his route running. Might struggle to consistently separate at the next level.

NFL COMPARISON
Brian Finneran

BOTTOM LINE
Kaufman is a very tall receiver, who is a dangerous vertical threat. He tracks the football well and is adept at catching the ball at it's highest point. He will need to prove that he has enough speed and physicality in order to be more than a red zone threat at the next level.

I hope he succeeds, but I don't think he's gotten a fair shake at RB at all.

EDIT: NFL.com agrees.

Though the Raiders had their hopes, Jones never emerged as a Darren Sproles-like complement to starting running back Darren McFadden. In fairness, Jones never really got a chance.

SE-174,
Tell those individuals, we can "testify" to the speed Taiwan Jones has, we saw him exploit many teams here at EWU, and away foes. Hope he stays healthy. We did see him an CB, and he loves to hit. He will fill in great in a CB position. Vic Wallace

Brandon Kaufman - Combine

Post by Screamin_Eagle174 » Sun Feb 24, 2013 7:04 am

Kauf put up 9 reps on the bench yesterday, and ran a 4.53 and 4.59 (unofficial) in the 40 so far today. Hopefully he can put together a dominant performance in the pass catching drills.

Update: He's caught 2/3 passes so far... dropped an over the shoulder ball on a go route, but also had a spectacular finger tip catch at waist level on a deep out route.

4.67 official 40 time. Ouch. That's not going to help him at all.

Other numbers:
33.5in vert
9ft 7in broad jump
7.11sec 3 cone drill
4.44sec 20 yard shuttle
12.14sec 60 yard shuttle

Since Kaufman ended up ranked 19th out of the 38 WR's...wonder where that projects him going in the draft?

I was actually thinking that a sub-4.7 was pretty good for him.

To All,
Saw BK 40 yard run on TV last night at 10:pm, on Channel 2 which is 22 at 10 pm. They stated he ran a 4.67, also saw him catch a pass. Also the WR from WSU run was also shown, but they were talking about his accusations he made of the Coaches at WSU.

Also Great FB Banquet last night, those young men I spoke with just can't wait for the Spring. I've seen some of them running the steps in Reese Court, and the hills in front of Reese Court. Tuesday at 3 p.m. 37 Athletes from local schools and away, will be going through some training from Coach Baldwin and Coaches, don't know how many will be chosen.Vic Wallace

p.s. An Athlete from GP, 6'4" 222lbs, TE, is in the group, his dad played alongside Ed Simmons in 1985. All of those Athletes look built, but looks are deceiving at times, we will see how they perform under pressure. I will be there as usual.

96-100 Future Hall of Famer Top Pick A once-in-a-generation type prospect who could change how his position is played
85-95 Immediate Starter 1st An impact player with the ability/intangibles to become a Pro Bowl player. Expect to start immediately except in a unique situation (i.e. behind a veteran starter).
70-84 Eventual Starter 2nd-3rd A quality player who will contribute to the team early on and is expected to develop into a starter. A reliable player who brings value to the position.
50-69 Draftable Player 4th-7th A prospect with the ability to make team as a backup/role player. Needs to be a special teams contributor at applicable positions. Players in the high range of this category might have long-term potential.

Kaufman has a grade of 68

Not really. He can run faster than that, and 4.6 and higher is slow by NFL standards for WR. In an interview he said he hoped to run a low 4.5, which he had ran while in Florida at Tom Shaw's on grass.

Kauf starts at 3:22.

EDIT: Am I too big of a Hawks fan that I recognize Seahawks.com's Clare Farnsworth's voice in that video interviewing them? :geek:

Here's a neat article on Seahawks.com that focuses on youngest brother Desmond Trufant, but also talks about Isaiah and Marcus, Kaufman, and EWU.

He may have sniffed a 4.59 hand time. But there's no way he breaks 4.6 electronically. He may be faster than some on a 50yd scale because of his long ass legs. But don't get me wrong...he'll burn a lot of nfl corners (sans seahawks corners) if they press him.

To All,
Just noticed on the Eagles Athletic Blog Area, was graded out @68.0, ranked 18th amongst 38 Wide Receivers, The 2nd tallest 6'5", and 2nd biggest Wide Receiver 216 lbs at NFL Combine, vertical jump 33 1/2 inches in Indianapolis.

March 6th EWU Pro Day, starts at 1pm, open to Media but not to the General Public. Eagles that will be there are Wide Receivers, Greg Herd, Nicholas Edwards, Linebacker, Zach Johnson, Offensive Line, Will Post, Defensive End, Jerry Ceja, and Quarter Back, Kyle Padron. That pissed me off, Gen Public cannot be there, that shot my wod. I will wish all of our Former Eagles "The best of luck, Show them what a little University is capable or doing. Good Luck Men, glad to have been associated with you and your families. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

I'm hearing that the guys that are participating are doing good things - Nick Edwards 40" vertical and both his and Greg Herd 10'9" broad jump were some of the highlights of the event portion.

Anyone there to see how the rest is going?
