The men got off to an easy win over a terrible NAIA Simpson team last night, 76-27. Not a bad turnout for the season opener. 27 points is the lowest amount allowed in Hornet history. Simpson had some size but aside from one or 2 players, pretty much zero talent and athleticism.

Patton led the way with 20 points and 10 boards. Esposito and Fowler both had 11 points. Katz played the bench for most of the 2nd half. Brandon Davis looks very athletic. He hasn't scored much, but I think that will come around. Jordan Cook-Harper has a lot of potential. Not much change from the returners, but they look ready to go. My only knock on last night was about a half dozen or so wide open 3's that were missed, but the Hornets did shoot 36% from range.

Hornets win again over UC by the River. The Highlanders took down the University of Nebraska by 19 a week ago. And Sac State beat the Big West school by 13.

Next up for the 2-0 Hornets.

UC Davis at Golden One.

This is the annual Causeway basketball/football week.

I was genuinely surprised by the control the Hornets had on the game vs UCR as they had beaten both Nebraska and Idaho. Let's go for two in a row against the Big West when we see Davis this week!

Davis is 2-2 so far this year.

@ Loyola-IL L82-48
vs WIL (NAIA) W109-63
vs Idaho W65-64
@ Arkansas ST L80-67

Pretty evenly matched teams based on the small sample size so far

62-49 Hornet win over UC Rivertucky this past Friday. Tenacious defense almost the whole game. Very impressive performance on that side of the court. Offense had some droughts here and there, and I absolutely hated how they turtled on offense in the final 5-6 minutes of the game to let this one get closer than it should have been.

Lot's of potential in the additions to the roster and load of athleticism at every position. Should be an interesting season.

I too was very impressed to see how well we controlled the game. What are your predictions as we face UC Davis next?

Their lone D1 win is a game winning layup against a terrible Idaho team that is trying to rebuild from the abrupt Verlin firing. And they just lost in double OT on Sunday to VMI, which is their only D1 win on the year.

If the Hornet defense played like it did against rivertucky and the offense cleans up some things (Esposito plays like he normally does, slightly better at FTs) then the Hornets should win. Interestingly enough, this will be a guard oriented team against a front court oriented team.

I'll be watching Patton closely and I've seen him in social media snippets wearing a non-contact jersey in practice. I don't know if he's hurt, or if they're handling him with care for some reason - he did miss the exhibition game. I haven't been in tune with the team as much, and Steve McElroy may have mentioned something on one of the broadcasts.

Some takeaways I had from the UCR Game:

-I really like the little bit of finishing, size and defense that Brandon Davis brings to the PG position.

-Our Forwards can make up for a lack of size with their athleticism - lumbering 7 footers will struggle to guard them.

-I don't know if Coach Katz gave Esposito the green light before the game, but he looked terrible taking outside shots. He needs to board and bang, we have lots of other shooters.

-I like Osi's activity level, but you can't foul out with 0 steals. lol...

-I was surprised Jordan Cooke-Harper didn't get more run.

61-51 win over the dungpilers in Golden 1 (no box score yet, stat program took a dump in the 2nd half). Total domination. The Hornets would have boat raced them in the 2nd half if the refs didn't keep it close with all the ticky tack foul calls on the good guys. This Hornet team is pretty tough and gritty and the defense is just downright tenacious. They out-hustled, outplayed, and out-willed a bigger team. It was so bad, that even with it only being a 10 point game with 5 minutes left, the dungpilers had no legs and will power to even try to make a frantic run and they were content to let the Hornets dribble out the clock and take the "L" back to their barn.

[email protected] impressive Hornet win tonight. There won't be many sexy wins this season, but they should be able to grind out plenty of them. Well done Hornets. Stingers Up!!!

Davis is very athletic and has shown he can drive the lane and create a shot when needed. His defense is what impresses me the most.

Lots of depth in the front court, and it is all very athletic.

Agreed on Esposito. Although he had a solid showing tonight against the dungpile.

I think Osi will be fine. He seemed to rack up a couple quick fouls against rivertucky.

Cooke-Harper just needs to eat up some minutes and fouls for Patton so he can get a blow when needed. I think he'll see more time as the season progresses, especially when Patton gets into foul trouble.

4,774 attendance tonight

Wow

Have not seen that type of attendance since a Sac State / UC Davis game in 1988 when the Hornets \
went to the NCAA II playoffs.

That year many bus loads of Hornet fans went to Davis for the game between the two schools and set the record for attendance of 5,000 in Rec hall

Hornets won that night with thousands of green and gold fans in Davis.

That was a special year in basketball.

Great to see a huge turn out tonight and looking forward to seeing Hornet Gym packed this year

Did that include the St.Mary's/Fresno State fans also or was it just for the Causeway game??

Also, a huge WIN for the men's team. Extend the head-to-head gap to 68-50 all time in the series. I know it's a small sample size, but the Defense on this Hornets team is like looking like it will win quite a few games. If Mauriohooho-Le'afaG can get knock down the 3s at a more consistent rate (he's percentage has been pretty low his whole career), this team will go far.

Next game is at Pepperdine. At really really good WCC team! On paper, they should win even if it wasn't played in Malibu. But that combined with playing at home, it's going to be difficult for the fellas to pull it off this Friday. But I'm ready to be pleasantly surprised!

I just witnessed the best half of Hornet basketball I’ve ever seen.

The Hornets were down by 11 at the half, but stormed back to absolutely boat race Pepperdine in the second half.

So much winning!

I must admit I’m kinda shocked by this result! I watched the game, and historically, Hornets will usually fade away in a game like this, against an opponent like this.
Great win!
The odd makers according to ESPN had the Hornets as a 9.5 points underdog. Sac State ended up winning 77-72. But the game wasn’t that close at the end as Pepperdine was intentional fouling like 10 straight times in the final minute. Hornets missed some FT but Hornets lead was too large.

77-72 Hornets comeback for a huge road win over a solid Pepperdine team. I wish there was a replay available to watch, I didn't see any of this one, too busy celebrating the FB Causeway win. Le'afa (23 pts, 4 stls) went off in the 2nd half, wow. Solid performances by Esposito (15 pts, 8 boards), Patton (13 pts, 4 boards), and Fowler (10 points) as well.

Nice was to cap off Causeway week, dare I say this was the best day in Hornet sports history?
