Ugh...

Well, as the article noted, 64 percent of Weber's athletic department is "subsidized," (i.e., funded by state funds and/or student fees), so what' s good for the goose....

Interesting...but I remember when a student at WSU & the funding of the new Dee Events Center was being discussed, it was stated by those in the know with state funding, that Utah college's athletic departments were being weaned off from being subsidized with state tax dollars...not only capital expenditures but operating costs (except state funded salaries/benefits)...that student fees, attendance revenue & booster fundraising had to pay for it. Haven't heard differently since & the Deseret News column is clear that this is a ear-mark single appropriation by a politically wise state senator from Logan. As in a state politician serving his special interests, nothing new! My complaint would be to Weber County representatives to speak out against it from a fairness point of view or get with it for Weber State!! Politics as usual, so good on Doug at Deseret News for showing light on it!!! :twocents:

did desnews write this article because they are sick of the aggie student section chanting "waste of tithing" vs byu? usu and wsu don't have tithing to pay for sports. this is anti-weber literature.

Wow...you totally missed the point in your lame attempt to punk me. Let me spell this out for you and your addled thought processes. BYU is a private institution. They can use whatever funds used to support them for whatever reason as long as it falls in line with NCAA rules. I don't like tithing paying for anything BYU let alone athletics, and the LDS Church has said they don't. Whether or not that is true is another issue but for the sake of this argument BYU is private. USU is a state institution. This money is coming from tax dollars. This money isn't being used for programs or facilities, but to help USU recruit. To me that is wrong and the state shouldn't be wasting tax payer dollars in an attempt to keep USU relevant vs. Utah and the P5 conferences. It USU wants to compete with Utah for recruits let their donors and athletics revenue pay for it. the state shouldn't waste money for recruits when there are lots of other areas it could be far more useful and needed.

You are absolutely right Tal. If USU wants to offer football players stipends, in an effort to keep up with UU and YBU, then that money should come from their boosters and not from me and you. I think that it is disgusting that senator asked for it in the first place, and more disgusting that the State legislature approved it.

Also, I don't like an article to claim a fact like the 64% without saying what it is going for, where it came from, and why it is accounted for that way. I found the article to be insufficient. :wtf:

Okay? I guess the Utah Legislature is just giving money away. Where is Weber's cut of the pie? Weber needs to keep up in recruiting to, just like the Aggies, where is our 1.5 million? Love how my taxes are being frivolously spent.

Complained to my state rep & senator about it...one replied it was stuck in at the last minute by the executive chair of the appropriations committee, Senator Hillyard from Logan & a USU booster. Can anyone shout out "pork-barrel politics"! :ohno:

Evidently Hillyard isn't a responsible figure to be chair of the appropriations committee. This move is downright disgusting.

The Deseret News is hitting on this subject.
