#10 Weber State v. St George Tech

E-uOMbmVIAQ23l7

Why is Weber playing in St George? This game should be in Ogden. My understanding is this is a home and home series.
You will never see BYU , UU, or USU in Ogden.
We should not see Weber in St George unless it is a 2 for 1 arrangement ( and even then I would grumble)

Was a 2 for 1 but 1st game in Ogden canceled last season for obvious reasons. DSU is now FCS so different than Weber vs BYU, UU, and USU who are FBS.

It probably still is a two for one deal. I think we agreed to go there first from the beginning. Nobody wanted to go there and they were in a predicament. If we get the same sort of officiating that Sac got, I would think that we would never want to go there again. I don't know where those refs came from, they could have just rounded up some off duty deputies for all I know, but they were horrible and totally one sided. I'm not a Sac fan, but they had to beat a 17 man side. They did it, so no harm done, but it was not a good thing to see. We used to get that sort of thing from SUU when they were not in the BSC. I think the problem is that no ref, worth his salt, wants to do a game anywhere near there. I don't blame them. It will be interesting to see how this whole WAC thing works out. Seems to me like a bunch of teams that nobody wants.

Enough of that. How do we beat the Slavers? Stopping their run game seems to be the easiest thing to do. Sac did it quite handily. I don't think their run game will be the key. If given the time their QB could hurt you. So don't give him any time. If we pressure him, he will make some mistakes. That much was evident in their game with Sac. Beating their D will probably mean that we have to beat a 17 man crew. That is easier to do with the run game. You can get behind their secondary if the refs will call any sort of holding or PI. In the Sac game the Slaver's DBs would just tackle their man 20 yards out and it worked all game long. A blind ref, who just read the braille version of the rules, would have done a better job. Maybe that's what the situation was, I don't know. I do know this, if that situation doesn't change, nobody will go there to play in the future. Why would you?

With a solid officiating crew we win going away. With a crew like Sac got, the game is too close for comfort. :coffee:

I remember last game at SUU when a Weber State player not only broke the plain, but landed in the end zone and somehow the official felt he was down at the one. Yep, the south teams have the refs usually aiding them as much as possible and Weber State seems to get jobbed in Ogden. I remember the NAU team even saying the Wildcats “fumble” was a bad call that let NAU take the lead in the Hail Mary Game.

I would say expect the Keystone Cops as the officials and get ready to overcome those calls. I think Weber State wins 28-13.

From the Standard:

Hill detailed the status of injured Wildcats or those yet to take the field as the Wildcats hit mid-week of preparations.

First, senior offensive lineman Ty Whitworth, who left the Utah game with an apparent leg injury: “He’s day by day … We’ll just see how he feels tomorrow, but I don’t expect him to be out a long time.”

Senior receiver David Ames and sophomore offensive lineman Ethan Atagi are both expected starters who missed the Utah game. Hill said Ames missed the game because he entered COVID protocol last week, but he was about to return to practice. Atagi began “ramping up” his practice activity.

“Those will both be big additions to what we’re doing,” Hill said.

Hill said junior receiver Devon Cooley is still with the team but will not play this season. The leading receiver for the team in 2019, Cooley caught just one pass during the spring season. Hill declined to elaborate more about his status, except to say that his situation isn’t a legal matter “or anything like that.”

Junior tight end and Tennessee transfer Jordan Allen has had hip pain that has kept him out of practice recently. Coaches lauded his athleticism and speed during fall camp, and Hill said he should be back to practice.

‘We’ve just got to get him back where he’s feeling good. I don’t think it’s a major injury, we’ve just got to get him back,” Hill said.

Glad to hear Whitworth is going to be okay. Doesn’t sound like Atagi is ready quite yet, just reading between the lines though.

Should be a comfortable 20-25 point victory. Anything else will be disappointing. I won’t be able to catch much of this but I want a dominant defensive performance from the Cats. Need to see the pass rush get home against a lesser opponent. Offensively, a clean game from Barron and a big game from Josh Davis please

Well that was a gift Dixie St. opted to not run out the half and made a mistake on coverage. This is every bit looking like the Spring offense that is inconsistent and catching some breaks.

Maybe Barron will get going in second half, but he looks very concerning to me.

Go Wildcats! Get it going in the second half.

A great second half sparked by a fake punt. Johnson did well. Not sure who will QB next week, but Weber State’s offensive strength is the rushing game. They need to focus on that and then pass to keep the opponent’s defense honest.

Next week will be a big test. Good job putting together a strong 2nd half. Go Wildcats!

Them Slavers is a pesky bunch.

Probably the class of the WAC.

The officiating was, once again, horrible. However, this game they were a little more evenly horrible. It's a start. :thumb:

IMHO, place kicking is a lot like free-throw shooting. Even the best miss, crowd and game pressure can get to you, and experience builds confidence.

It's frustrating to have those misses, but it really shouldn't come down to that, unless you have screwed up in other aspects of a game. I feel like we should have a little patience with this situation. I believe that it will work itself out. We are only two games into this season. There is time to get things right. :coffee:

That would make some sense if you ignore the kicking performance in the spring…

Went to the game in St. George and was shocked at how poorly Weber played in the first half. The fact that they were up 14-3 at the half says more about how much Dixie was overmatched than it does about how Weber played. I don't ever remember a game where we played as poorly as the first half of that game.

The second half we looked more like I expected. I think this version of the team is better than the Spring version but still has a long way to go to compete with the top teams in FCS. If we are to compete with JMU this week they will need to improve dramatically and to play well for all 4 quarters. Can't take any time off against JMU.

I expect that we will not win that game. Probably just not strong enough as a team. But it is possible that we could win if the stars align, we play perfectly and JMU can't handle the altitude and doesn't play well.

While Johnson led the team to several scores he did not look like a confident quarterback out there. He was extremely hesitant to pull the trigger. Against Dixie he could get away with that and still find the end zone, but I doubt that it will work against JMU. I expect that he will start the game and Weisser will have to be brought in eventually to try and save the day. Weisser is not the athlete of Johnson but he is a far better and more decisive QB than Johnson. He is a pocket passer and Johnson rarely will even throw the ball from the pocket. He can hit some passes while on the move however and he can gain some yards running. But again, I very much doubt that his game will translate effectively against JMU like it did against Dixie.

Yes, there must have been some good adjustments made at half time on defense. Watching on TV, it looked like DSU was playing on pure adrenalin in the first half and were worn down as the game progressed. By the time we put the cheerleaders in, the Slavers were gassed. :coffee:
