SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Courtney VanBrocklin had 13 points, including the go-ahead basket with 37 seconds left, to help Portland State to a thrilling 69-66 overtime victory at Santa Barbara on Thursday afternoon.
VanBrocklin's jumper gave PSU a 65-64 lead and the Vikings held on from there for their first victory of the 2010-11 season. Portland State improved to 1-1, while UCSB fell to 0-3.
The Vikings scored the first five points of the contest on a layup by Kelly Valentine and a VanBrocklin three-pointer, but UC Santa Barbara took control from there. The Gauchos led 28-16 after a layin by Emilie Johnson at the 6:40 mark, with their run fueled by seven Portland State turnovers.
PSU took better control of the ball the rest of the way and climbed back into the contest to trail 33-31 at the break.
Coming out of halftime, Portland State took a quick 36-33 lead on a 3-pointer by Lexi Bishop. UCSB scored six of the next seven points after Kelsey Adrian made consecutive shots from behind the arc. From there, the Gauchos would lead for almost the next 10 minutes, until a VanBrocklin layup helped Portland State go back in front, 49-48.
With three minutes left, a bucket by Eryn Jones made it 58-56 in favor of the Vikings. Ninety seconds later, Mekia Valentine tied it up with a layup and the period eventually ended in a 58-58 tie, sending the game in overtime.
In the extra period, Shauneice Samms made 1 of 2 at the line with 2:36 remaining, giving PSU a 63-62 advantage. The Gauchos went back in front on a layup by Sweets Underwood, before VanBrocklin's jumper with 37 seconds to go gave the Vikings a lead they wouldn't surrender.
Samms led the Vikings with 14 points and added seven rebounds. In addition to her 13 points, VanBrocklin tallied six boards and five steals. The Vikings also go 12 points from Valentine.
Mekia Valentine paced UCSB with 18 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks, while Underwood came off the bench to score 15.
