PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland State forced visiting Lewis & Clark into 30 turnovers and held the Pioneers to just 25 percent shooting to run away with a 74-47 victory at the Stott Center on Tuesday night.
The Vikings had little trouble disposing of the NCAA DIII Pioneers, hitting their first four shots from the field to take a 11-2 lead just over 90 seconds into the contest. PSU won the opening tip and Courtney VanBrocklin promptly sank a 3-pointer from the left wing for the game's first basket. Eryn Jones and Kelli Valentine both added three-pointers, before Jones drove to the basket for an easy layup.
Portland State took its largest lead of the first half, 31-12, after Jones made two free throws at the 9:04 mark. The Vikings eventually went into intermission up 40-26.
Coming out of the break, Portland State scored 15 of the first 17 points and held a 55-28 advantage with 15:15 to go. The Vikings led by as many as 30 points, before settling for the 27-point victory.
PSU played outstanding defense after halftime, limiting Lewis & Clark to just 12 points over the first 15:04 after the break and holding the Pioneers to 13 percent shooting (3 of 23) in the second half.
Lewis & Clark (3-1) made just 12 of 48 field goals in the game. The 12 field goals were a new low by a Portland State opponent during their NCAA DI era (1996-present), and the Pioneers' 25 percent shooting mark was the lowest by a Viking opponent since Denver shot 24.6 percent (17 of 69) on Dec. 3, 1998.
VanBrocklin paced the Vikings with 11 points and five rebounds, while Bishop and Jones both finished with 10 points. Kelly Marchant came off the bench to grab a career-high five steals as PSU tallied 17 in the game.
Lewis & Clark's Kristina Williams poured in a game-high 20 points, including making 12 of 15 at the free-throw line, and also pulled down 11 boards. The Pioneers ended up outrebounding Portland State, 40-39.
The Vikings (2-1) now head to Berkeley, Calif. where they will take part in the two-day Colliers International Classic, hosted by California, Nov. 27-28. Portland State opens up against Tulane on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. That game can be heard on AM 1360 KUIK.
