So far, each Tuesday morning we can hear Coach Hill talk about the Wildcats. They host the show at Larry H. Miller Riverdale.

Fun listen although little mentioned as to the "mind set" or approach to the upcoming game, although shouldn't expect an airing out of the coaches/team's woes I guess. Did note that Coach wants to play a big time level school each year (for $ of course even though not said) just to show the team the atmosphere, etc. Encouraged attendance at the homecoming game.

By the way, (per me), who really gives a crap that the first home game is homecoming, besides a few posters here!? Admittedly the SUU game would have been a better choice, but maybe it's because it's on a Fri nite, Oct 2nd. It's all about the logistics! To try & get a half decent crowd out to a Weber State football game now days, it takes giving away free tickets from a sponsor, it takes avoiding as much as possible conflicts with U / BYU games (impossible because even if not at home, they're on TV), & yes, even LDS Conference meetings!

NO complaints or whining :dead: on this year's schedule or cheap freebies from here ! :ohno:

Those of us who paid $150 per chair back seat can complain and bitch all we want about all the free ticket giveaways. The tickets up in the box are way more, just imagine how bent they are that the public can get free tickets to every game YET we cant get over 9k to show up STILL. :twocents:

Waterboy;

I always respect what you have to say, and I understand your desire for everyone to pay their own way. However, I don't see it the same way. Promotions are just that, promotions. Even the Jazz do it. I buy those box tickets, and I don't think that any promotion cheapens my purchase. Personally, I want to include people who would, otherwise, not be included. I would be doing even more to get students and young people from the community, more involved with the University at all levels.

I would never complain about the lack of promotion on one hand, and then complain when promotions are taking place. There just seems to be something wrong there....., just sayin'. :twocents:

I really don't care when homecoming is. Let's face it, homecoming doesn't really mean much anymore anyway. But I do see the point that having it the first home game of the season is strange. I think the October 17 game would have made more sense. :twocents:

And I'm not complaining about the free tickets. I'm complaining about what a poor and lazy method of marketing it is. It cheapens your product and causes those who actually do buy tickets to question why they're buying them.

I've been a long-time whiner and beotcher regarding poor marketing, price structures, corporate tickets vs paying customers, creative attendance announcements, poor scheduling, etc. I've been disappointed at lackluster fan support for decades, but the bottom line is if they put an entertaining product out on the field, their customers will buy it. It's obvious there are many other interests that compete with Weber State athletics, including bigger, "better" programs close by. However, they can market the hell out of it (although they rarely do) and create a buzz over it but when the product continually disappoints the consumer, the customer base dwindles.

Specifically with football, in addition to the shambles J. L. Satan left the program in, by the time Weber finally gets home games that matter (BSC) they've usually been thumped on the road a few times, putting a damper of the start of the season. All too often, Weber looses several of it's first BSC games, making a run for a championship and/or playoff appearance doubtful. Throw in a dismal offense and it's easy to see why fans don't get or stay excited. They have to put an exciting team on the field and some early wins on the board and the fans will want to watch them compete.

Weber must start winning their first home games of comparable talent and why not start this season? GO WEBER! Beat Sac! Fix the horrid offense and beat Sac!

I get it...valid points. I really don't know how the mix between WSU athletics marketing (what marketing?) & major sponsors like America First work beyond the signing up, but I do remember for a number of years a sponsor like AFCU or Standard-Examiner would pick a football & basketball game to offer free tickets (family night thing) for just a small effort made in members getting them. I thought this game's AFCU deal is the same thing, not so much related to the marketing effort or lack of. :twocents:

I commend those individuals who pay for tickets. I think it's crazy how the departments main "go-to" is to give away the house. To me ticket sales aren't the top revenue stream at this point. Sponsorships, guarantee games, and donations are the most important. To get good sponsors, you need fans and what better way to get fans than giving everything away. Yet, doing that hurt the products viability. I would give discounts and coupons away before giving everything up for free. But whatever, I'm just hoping for a full stadium Saturday night. Got my fingers crossed that 10k show up.

10K would be sensational, after where this team has been. 5K would be more realistic. 2K students would be sensational. 500 students would be more realistic. 200 students who actually give a flying flip, would be sensational. 25 of those sorts is more realistic. 5 faculty members in attendance would be great. One is probably more realistic. 3, non athletics, administrative staff would be more than good. One is most realistic. 5% of our local business leaders in attendance would be outstanding. Less than 1% is probably what will be in attendance.

All I see is a lot of marketing potential.

There hasn't been as much complaining about free tickets as there usually has been. I for one don't care if there are free tickets. Someone buy those tickets. Whether it be the sponsor or whatever, someone pays for those tickets. I am sure they get a better price buying them in bulk, but they are paid for by someone. The point is to put more fannies in the seats. We all want to win and we all want to see a full stadium so you can sit around and hope to get a free ticket or you can buy season tickets like a lot of this here on the forum do. They aren't all that expensive. I think probably a hundred $120 for a set of FIVE season tickets for a family plan?! Do the math. It's less than 6 bucks a pop.That's an insane price to watch college football! That's my preferred way to watch Wildcat football and if I can't use all the tickets with my family I stand outside and give them away. You may think that someone just got in free. Yes they did. By using my ticket they got in free but I paid for that ticket. So do we get to stop complaining about freebies from here on in? Go Wildcats
