#18 Cal Poly vs. Portland State

We play both of these teams, and after watching this game thus far, I'm not worried about either one of them…

Totally disagree.

Both teams made quite a few mistakes - especially the two young QB's but those mistakes are correctable and should be minimized by the time we play them.

These are the type of offenses that historically give us fits and both Poly and especially PSU have won quite a few games against us over the years.

Making matters worse is that McDonagh throws a good ball, and Chris Brown is a way better passer than Broadus was. You knew Poly was screwed when you got them in 3rd and long situations, but Brown can throw his way out of it, not to mention he has better size and is really fast.

Looking ahead at PSU's schedule they still might have an outside shot at a playoff spot when we fact them the last game of the season.

Very few gimmies on the schedule.

Agreed. If both teams find a way to get out of their own way and stop making stupid mistakes, both will be very hard to beat. And we play them in back to back weeks to end the regular season. At least ISU will be a gimme.

31-28 Cal Poly, PSU just scored on a long pass to their "Kaufman" receiver.

I know, right? That over the shoulder catch and tip toe balancing act down the sideline into the endzone was very Kaufman-estque.

No doubt Poly will be a tough go, but I was not impressed by their vertical passing game. At all. Or PSU's, for that matter.

Everything's pales to what we see on a weekly basis...including the Bell kid from Sam Houston. You see their throwing motion, the simplicity of the routes...and then BAM they pop a lucky one over the top as soon as the secondary starts getting sucked in. You think 'oh well, luck shot' until they do it again...and again. I watched them do it enough over the past couple years to the point where it stops being luck and becomes a very nice compliment to the option.

Yeah, it only takes a couple of those big plays over the top to force you to stop stacking the box. On the other hand some of those passes for both Qbs were way off the mark.

Brown can throw, but he was definitely off last night. Maybe he was pressing too much. He threw for 186 yards in one quarter against Fresno State and was hitting the WRs in stride. Young QB starting only his second game. At least last night he made up for an off night throwing by rushing for 129 yards and a TD. He has the physical tools and watch out when he is on both running and throwing.

I didn't think either team was all that impressive. Portland State should have just stuck with their running game all night long. They had that one quick-strike drive to end the first half and their OC decided to keep airing it out and that just killed their offensive momentum.

I think PSU is a good team with some very talented players that made some big mistakes. I also think Cal Poly will surprise a few people before the season is over especially if Brown continues to grow as a QB. Looking forward to the Eagles coming down to SLO. I have nothing but respect for EWU and we seem to give the Eagles a better game at home. We never seem to in Cheney and 2012 was not an exception to that rule.

After seeing this week's Eastern game, I now think both of these teams are a much bigger threat than I did on Thursday night. Anyone who commits to running the ball is going to cause us a helluva lot of problems. We'll try to play both of these teams with 5 in the box and they'll be pushing forward 5-10 yards on every run. :ohno:
