1st Spring Scrimmage

I made it out to Cheney today for the first Spring scrimmage. Saw some things to be excited about:

Defense caused 4 turnovers and had some BIG hits. The D looks fast and was swarming to the ball although they did get beat deep a few times. Some of those passes were overthrown though. Kupp, Montgomery, Kreifels and Calhoun were consistently in on tackles. A couple of nice picks by Calhoun and Katz. I absolutely love the way Mitch Fettig plays. He is a stud IMO.

Offense looked solid too for the most part when they weren't turning the ball over. GG looked in mid-season form on some drives and on other drives he made some questionable throws. But overall, for the first scrimmage and working with some new WR's he looked pretty solid.

EB3 was fun to watch also. Kid has an arm on him and the mobility to run and extend plays. He can chuck it downfield on the run too. Only went 4 for 9 but that was because he had a few balls dropped. Speaking of dropped balls....there were a few of those today. Need to get that cleaned up.

I like our young speed at receiver. Xavier James and Sonte Dorton look fast when I watch them run routes. James only had one catch so still not really sure what he can do. I said it last year, and I'll say it again...I think Dre' Sonte Dorton has all of the tools to become a star eventually. He had an 80-plus yard touchdown today and it happened in the blink of an eye. Kid can run. It will be interesting to see if he has a break-out year. I think he will eventually but hopefully it's this year. There were some overthrows but our WR's were consistently winning downfield with their speed.

Really liked what I saw from our O-line even though I doubt the numbers will back it up. QB's threw from a clean pocket almost all scrimmage long. Saw a few running plays where lineman were making blocks at the 2nd and 3rd level. I didn't see that last year at this time. Thought McPherson ran hard today. Looks like we are going to pound the ball on the ground next year while taking quite a few shots deep. And after watching today, I really like our ability to take the TOP off of defenses with our speed at WR. Could be a great year for play-action.

Overall, I was happy with what I saw considering it's only the first scrimmage of Spring and there are quite a few fresh faces. Definitely some things to work on and room for growth but I like where we are at right now.

Thanks for the update I will be there next two weekends. Sad to miss this one.

I too was impressed with our speed, in all positions. The #1 O-line looked good but noticeable drop off when when the #2 played. To be expected and I am sure will pick it up.
D-line is very fast and athletic.
We will not replace Cooper Kupp but the field of receivers is quite impressive.
A guy wearing #5, who was not a QB, playing r/b made some impressive plays. Oggie told me he was a walk on from winter tryouts, I think he said his name is Jacobson.
EB3 can really wing it. On one play he was scrambling on a roll out and chucked it down field 50+ yards on the run! I think he can easily out throw is receivers and as fast as they are we may see a lot of big plays.
Even watching Coach Best was entertaining, he was quite animated in the backfield and trying to get a little more enthusiasm out of the guys. I can see differences in his style vs Coach Baldwin already. Thats good, I'd like to see this be "his" team not in the shadows of BB. I did expect to see more running plays.

I like our young speed at receiver. Xavier James and Sonte Dorton look fast

These guys are/were both legit track guys with real speed. Nice to hear it is translating. Looking forward to seeing the next WR group make a name for themselves.

Palm Springs Eag,
Check out these other Wide Receivers: #7-Nic Sblendorio, #14- Jayson Williams, #22-Nsimba Webster, #80-Zach Eagle, #81- Stu Stiles, #88- Terence Grady. All the mentioned WR are very good, along with the incoming will be hard to deal with. I agree with you about Xavier James, and Dre Sonte Dorton, they are going to make it look like we haven't lost any WR. We can not replace Kupp Shaq, and Bourne. These Young men will take care of heir jobs. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic E. Wallace

Wish I could make it to today's scrimmage. I have another commitment during that time though. Hoping someone else on the board can write something up for all of us.
