2007-2008 Off-Season Thread

We have the talent to make a serious run to get into the NCAA tourney next year.

I see our team having a great defense such as the team two years ago.

To add to that...

Once our new AD is in place (hopefully soon), we should start sending requests to upgrade/increase the game atmosphere at the Stott Center. The Stott is what it is, but it can sure be a tough place to play when it's full and the crowd is going. It was fairly obvious that due to the current conditions in the AD, no effort would be put into men's or women's basketball.

That being said, we have a shot at the BSC in 2007-2008 and really need a) the pep band back, and b) advertising for the games in the media and on campus.

I've been reading this forum since November now and it seems to me that every discussion on the promotion and attendance of PSU athletics lacks one fundamental point:

According to http://iiswinprd03.petersons.com/ugchannel/code/InstVC.asp?sponsor=1&inunId=8187 the undergraduate student population is 17,998. http://www.pdx.edu/news/7522/ shows the full student population at 19,322. Neither of those figures include faculty or alumni! Let those numbers sink in for a minute. . .

Now, we need to ask the question regarding attendance of PSU athletic events: WHERE ARE THE STUDENTS?!!! Why aren't the students interested in PSU Athletics? I believe that those two questions must be answered and addressed first before we can address the larger issue of why the city of Portland and its suburbs are largely dis-interested in PSU Athletics. If the athletic department can answer those two questions, then it will go a long way toward fixing their attendance problems.

A lot of the undergrad students are 'non-traditional' students that probably still live at home and drive go downtown to attend class.

PSU needs to find a way to target those students.

PSU has about 25,000 students right now. I'll break down why there isn't more student support.

50% of the 25,000 are returning students. These people have jobs, families, and other obligations. They just don't have the time to be interested in college athletics. If they do, they probably already have favorite teams.

Of the remaining 12,500 students, 5,000 or more are transfers from other schools like U of O and OSU. These students are still loyal to their original school, even going down there for games quite often and wearing their orange or yellow shirts around campus.

So we are down to 7,500 students. Of those, 4-5,000 are non-traditional students. They want nothing to do with anything that is traditionally college related, ie college sports, greeks, etc.

So while the initial number looks great at 25,000, the real numbers show that the student base that would actually come out to games is around 2,500-3,500. This should still fill the Stott and create a huge presence at PGE Park. A better job needs to be done to get these students, but the inital numbers don't tell the whole story.

This is healthy analysis to a key question. However, don't you think things are changing. It seems like over the last few years, the avg. PSU student has started becoming more traditional. I think I recall reading that the avg. age of PSU students is only about 2 years older than the avg. UO student. More kids are living on campus, as well. What can be done to attract new students as they arrive on campus for the first time?

It was only two years apart when I transferred from PSU to Oregon 22 years ago.

It DOES matter if PSU can get at least a little more residential presence; I believe several of you have mentioned that this is happening. However, I still sense the nontraditional student issue is a very large hurdle to overcome.

Lots can be done to get students to the games. Nothing is being done either creatively or just simple common sense. The current AD is incompetent. Hopefully, the new Athletic Director will clean house and get some creative, hard working types on board. Past Athletic Dept. employees use the excuse that there is no money. Blah, blah, blah. We are spending money on salaries in the AD. Now get off your butt and do something. How about sending someone to student groups around campus and inviting them to games? How about asking the numerous groups in the Business School to do team building activities by attending games? How about setting up a pizza party at the Stott games to feed hungry students? You could get a ton of stuff donated. Companies have marketing budgets that target students. Ride that gravy train.

And another thing, the half time games are entertaining every once in a while but every game? How lame is that? Having a pep band is a no brainer. Why Mariani couldn't organize one is beyond me. Finally, Bone has to get out and sell his program. Take a lesson from Coach Glanville.

This is just taking a few moments and brain storming some ideas. Hopefully, they right the ship and get it pointed in the right direction.

The booster club could take more initiative and help recruit more fans. The attendance on the season ticket side is anemic.

Yes, PSU is becoming more of a traditional campus. More students are coming straight from high school, and not coming via transfer. The KEY to attendance is to get the students while they are young (freshman, sophmore) and get them hooked for life.

On another web site there is an article about Domonic Waters leaving the University of Hawaii and heading back to Portland. I think this may be who the poster was talking about.

This would be nice, especially if he had 2 years of eligibility left.
