Taking an early look into next season, how do you think the Viks will fair?

The Viks lose 23 Seniors after the UNC game.

To many of the guys leaving had big roles in the team. Nee, TK, D. Lewis, Mackins, Heerspink, Carvalho, Feakin, Senn, Schenk, Dorsey, C. Smith, C. tyler, Humphreys, etc, etc.

look for JG and Mouse to make some smooth recruiting moves...the run and shoot gives athletes a chance to show their stuff...players who want to go past the college level love it!

For PSU, the best is likely to come later
Glanville expects to spend season grooming young players

I guess it's better to have low expectations following a bad year, than to have unrealistic expectations following the hire of a coach with a big name.

We were two games in last year before anyone really started to believe that we were a bad football team. This year, we get a tune up game, a bye, and a couple of games that we're really not expected to win. So we basically get nearly a month of the season to see what we're dealing with before BSC play starts, and on top of that, we open BSC play with one of the weaker programs in Sac State. If, and that's a big if, things actually start to fall into place and guys step up, we have a pretty good schedule to catch the BSC napping on us.

On the flip side, poor play in the first month could lead to a bad loss at Sac State and send this season into a tailspin before we know it....

Glanville must narrow down wide receivers
There are 21 on PSU's roster, but most are still trying to figure out the run and shoot playbook:

PSU football camp: Day 6

http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2008/08/psu_football_camp_day_6.html

Six practices down after Saturday, and 23 left to go -- counting six sets of daily-doubles -- before the Aug. 30 opener against Western Oregon at PGE Park.

Vikings coach Jerry Glanville has been encouraged by some of what he has seen, but said he didn't get to as many things as he had hoped in the first week of camp.

"We're a little bit behind," Glanville said. "We threw so much at the young kids, they're kind of lost. Starting Monday, we'll throw the same things at them on the same days, and this time around I hope they pick it all up.

"We are working our way through what we've got to work through. We are still a work in progress. And when you look at 33 freshmen, you will probably be working the entire year."

With the latest roster revisions (as of Friday), the Vikings have 31 incoming freshmen and eight redshirt freshmen, it's unclear how Glanville comes up with 33.

Maybe he's counting scholarship freshmen, incoming and redshirts combined, and not the walk-ons.

Or maybe its a good thing Glanville is coaching football and not teaching math.

"The problem with freshmen is you can't pack experience in," Glanville said. "If we could pack experience in, I would be ready to go."

Colin Williams, a sophomore free safety from Boise, who played in six games on special teams and made three tackles last season, was one of three walk-ons to leave the program this week. Zachary Pick, a sophomore strong safety from El Paso, Texas, and Ryan Kavanaugh, a senior wide receiver from Pleasanton, Calif., also left.

On the injury front, junior free safety Jordan Brown became the first projected starter to miss significant practice time. Brown, still recovering from left knee surgery, tweaked his left ankle and left hamstring, while adjusting to playing with a knee brace. Neither injury is considered serious and he sat out most of Saturday's workout mostly as a precaution.

Chris Assily, the 6-2, 215-pound junior transfer from Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif., filled in for Brown with the first-team defense and was one of the bright spots during Saturday's practice.

"We had two rules, they were late for a meeting," Glanville said. "We have two rules: Be on time and give 100 percent. Not a lot of rules, but if you violate the rules, you may be writing mama saying, 'I'm coming home.'"
