2008 Football Season

Not sure what Glanville's last comment was related to about being late for meetings. My understanding is the players mentioned in the article as having left the team did so on their own. They were not asked to or told to leave.

Change Afoot In The Big Sky

7. Portland State (3-8, 3-5, tied for sixth)

With the hiring of Jerry Glanville last year, many observers picked Portland State as a potential playoff team. But the Vikings collapsed behind a porous defense and injuries.

Glanville is still trying to bring in players that fit his system and a host of new athletes make it difficult to predict where the Vikings will finish this season.

"We'll be full of surprises," said Glanville. "We'll have a lot of 17 and 18 year olds in the lineup and 17 and 18-year olds are full of surprises."

The Vikings gave up 38 points per game last season (110th in FCS), but the defense has every chance to be vastly improved this year after a year of learning the blitz-oriented 3-4 formation.

Middle linebacker Andy Shantz (85 tackles in nine games) could be the first FCS linebacker taken in next year's NFL draft. He is surrounded by good talent in fellow linebackers K.J. McCrae and Ryan Pederson.

The offense will be incredibly young, but it does have one of the top fullbacks in FCS, Bobby McClintock, and two talented quarterbacks, Tygue Howland and Drew Hubel, returning.

Howland won the job last fall before being sidelined by a broken foot. Hubel came on as a freshman and threw for 1,470 yards in four starts and tied an NCAA record with nine TD passes against Weber State. Raymond Fry and Tracy Ford transferred in from Idaho to bolster the receiving corps.

One of the biggest losses for Portland State is All-American Brennen Carlvalho, the 2007 Rimington Award winner (top center below the FBS level).

Andy is a pre-season All American (2nd team).

You have to be a bit more optimistic after reading this report. Not much more you can hope for. We'll have to see how this all works out in game action.

Pieces falling into place

Mouse Davis needs four wide receivers in his run and shoot offense.

He has three.

The Vikings scrimmaged Saturday morning and appeared closer to being ready for next week's opener against Western Oregon than they looked on Tuesday.

Assuming nothing changes between now and Saturday's opener against Western Oregon at PGE Park, the Vikings will lineup with senior Ty Coleman as one outside receiver, and juniors Mario D'Ambrosio and Aaron Woods at the two slot positions.
The question is: Who is going to start at the other outside spot?
After Saturday's morning scrimmage, Davis said it's a toss-up between to junior college transfers -- Lavonte Kirven and Dan Wolverton.

The Vikings also appear close to being set along the offensive line with senior Landan Laurusaitis at left tackle, junior Moses Punzal at left guard, junior Tyler Staley at center, senior Clayton Rios at right guard, and junior Matt Leunen at right tackle.

"It's coming together," Davis said of the O-line. "I think they're doing a better job all the time."

As for the defense, Vikings coach Jerry Glanville was pleased with Saturday's performance, saying his team is closer to being ready to play a game than it was on Tuesday.

"It's unbelievable, isn't it?" Glanville said. "Now, what we need, we can't get it here. We need game experience. But, have we improved in a week, or what?

"I think we are where we are, and we can't do anything much about it until we start playing. I think we'll play our way into form, and we'll get better and better as we play games. We can do all you want out here on the practice field, but it's not the same as a game."

I think I'm feeling better than I was earlier this week, that's for sure.

Considering that it's game week and the game plans will be worked on, we can pretty much consider 'camp' as being done.

That being said, here are some comments going into the WOU game.

I expect the 1st string defense to dominate WOU in every way shape and form. Nothing against WOU, but we have a talented division 1(aa) defense. The test for this game, will be when the 2 and 3 deep guys get into the game. I'd hate to see the starters play really well, then have our defensive units from the bench give up late point indicating that they are not even close to ready. Hopefully this game is out of hand at the half, but the 2nd half will show us Viking fans a lot as far as the defense goes.

For the offense: I'm pretty comfortable with D'Ambrosio and Woods at slot, but the wide out spot is a huge unknown as far as who is going to step up.

Staley's play at center will be a spot to watch. If he plays well, our starting o line is a talented group. PSU has a history of injuries on the o line, so one can never expect to get thru a full season without a couple of guys getting banged up.

Bobby is going to punish people this year.

I can't wait. We're less than a week out...

I was really hoping to get at least one game broadcast as a PSU game, with local announcers and PSU-centric graphics, etc. Getting the other school's feed is much better than nothing, but not quite the same as having your own broadcast. Comcast has done a great job of cobbling together UP-centric broadcasts for soccer and basketball, and it seems like it wouldn't be that hard to do the same for a PSU football game.

I hear you on that. It would be nice to see something like they did for the UM/PSU men's hoops game this past season. Even though Scott Lynn did call us the Pilots at one point, it was nice to have the look and feel of our own broadcast team.

The more I think about it, I don't even care about this for my own viewing purposes, but I think it makes a big deal for casual sports fan who might tune in. I'm already a PSU diehard so I'll watch no matter what, but having a local PSU broadcast legitimizes PSU's product in the eyes of casual fans we're trying to bring into the fold.
