2009-10 Big Sky Scheduling

SALT LAKE CITY -- Big Sky Conference men's and women's basketball teams will play league games on Fridays and Saturdays next season as members try to trim costs for the 2009-10 school year.

The conference will also not allow air travel for road trips of under 450 miles and is reducing the Big Sky volleyball and tennis tournaments to four teams instead of six.

Big Sky officials hope the changes save about $415,000 -- or $46,000 per school.

The league announced last month that the volleyball schedule would go to Fridays and Saturdays and that additional changes were possible during the Big Sky's spring meetings this week in Salt Lake City.

What does everyone think about this?

Could be good. May help student turnout for those that have homework/class the next day for Thursday nights.

Teams will be tired and it will put a premium on depth. Seems like coaches would have less time to make adjustments between games, too.

I'm not a fan of this. I saw this posted on the O-Live forum that made some good points. Points out that it will mean playing on Friday nights and traveling over night to play in another city on Saturday nights.

For instance, we'll play in one of the Montana schools on Fri. ride a bus 350 miles and play at the other Montana school the next day. Road games are always tough, but this seems like Saturday night road games are going to be even harder to win this season.

Selfishly, it is going to be hard to convince the family that I should be spending Friday AND Saturday nights at the Stott. This is going to take some persuasion! I need to start working on this a.s.a.p.

just curious, what is the farthest distance the Ivy teams have to travel? seems like a ridiculous schedule, like someone else said, depth will be a big factor.

I agree there is a difference.
