2009 Schedule

I like the optimism SH but its time for some brutal reality:

UNLV is turning things around under Mike Sanford. They did beat a highly over-rated Arizona State team(#15 at the time), but none-the-less it’s still a PAC 10 team (5-0 in bowl games). I think it will be a close game but in the end the Hornets run out of steam resulting in another season opening loss. (0-1, 0-0)

Assuming Humboldt State is scheduled in game #2, this will be the first win of the season. (1-1, 0-0)

I’m hoping that Sac State can open conference play with a win over EWU, but it should be a close one. For the sake of argument, I’ll be a homer and go with a Sac State win. (2-1, 1-0)

Game #4 will be an indication on how the season will go for the Hornets, but given that it’s a road game, anything can happen. We experienced this kind of a let down during the ISU game last year. However, the Hornets hang tough and pull together to squeak out a road win. (3-1, 2-0)

Game #5 will be Sac State getting revenge for last years embarrassing season finale with a dominating win over the ISU Bengal’s. (4-1, 3-0)

Games #6 & #7 will a negative turning point for the season with two lopsided losses for the Hornets. The first will be on the road against a tough Weber State team and the second will be a home loss to the dominant Montana Grizzlies. Both teams will be looking to repeat as Big Sky Champs. (4-3, 3-2)

Game #8 will be a must win at home against NAU if they want to salvage the season. The Hornets get it together and slug out a home win against an aggressive team, giving new meaning to the season. (5-3, 4-2)

Game #9 will be a huge road win in Northern Colorado as the team rides the momentum gained in the NAU game and look to make a statement in the Big Sky. (6-3, 5-2)

Game #9 will be a tremendous disappointment as the Hornets can not overcome the elements and travel in a mid-November game at Montana State. (6-4, 5-3)

And finally in the most important game of the year, the Hornets take all their season long frustrations and anger out on an over-matched and injury ridden ucd team who early in the season lost most of their key starters in two embarrassing losses to Boise State and Fresno State. Sac State goes on to completely destroy ucd by three touchdowns (Yes I said it, 3 TD’s). Sac State continues the streak of Causeway victories and in the process adds more turmoil to a program that expected to be contenders at the D1 level which further increases the jubilation and expectation of Sac State football fans.

Final season record 7-4 overall, 5-3 in conference. 8-)

Since the FCS is expanding the playoffs to 20 teams, A record of 7-4 overall and 5-3 might just get you in the tourny, granted it probably wont be a great spot, but its better than not being there at all. ;)

Dont be surprised if Sac is alot better this year, they almost beat a tough Weber State team at home last season, a win at home this year vs the Grisslys will put Sac on the Map

Really, put Sac on the map?! I dont think that by beating Weber it would put Sac on the map, I just think it would solidify what most of us have been saying since Sperbeck got here. Given, Weber was good last year, we did come within 5 points in a game that was close all 4 quarters, I also think, if Im remembering correctly that we had a backup QB and RB as well. ;)

Dont become a Griz fan WEBER, your better than that

So with the four additional teams I am assuming that the top 4 seeds get a bye in the first round? When did the FCS make the announcement to go to 20 teams?

Right after last years tournament ended, I remember hearing that the FCS is planning on expanding the tourny to 20 or even 24 teams this next season or the year after that. And making it so the National title will be played the day before the BCS championship.

And dont worry Stung, I would rather die than become a grisslys fan. Purple pride for life. ;)

SHA, Ooooh, ok.

I heard the same thing WILDCAT, but Im not sure its set in stone. How would the autobids work if the playoff teams were expanded?

I think they would seed the top 12 teams, which would have first round bye's. Then the other 8 teams play first round games to get to the main bracket. Which with the addition of the 4 winners would make it 16 teams left to duke it out ??? Im Not Sure.

The top 12 seeds would go to the 12 Conference winners, and the other 8 would go to others. Hopefully this means that the NCAA wont screw the west so bad again, all 4 west teams play each other in the first 2 rounds, that was a crock.

Is the issue money, is that why they had the 4 west teams play each other? How does a school get home field advantage over a school across the country, if they do a first round east west/south playoff, they have no common wins usually? Is it based on schedule "strength"?

If NAU drops football, we will lose a home game. I guess playing Humboldt is almost a requirement. I bet we add Cow Poly.

Where did this come from? Do they have serious issues at NAU?

I would assume they set up the west schools to play each other to reduce costs of travel and other related issues. The regional scheduling has its pros and cons, also you have to remember there aren't many dominate or impressive (according to the selection committee) teams out west compared to the east coast. Only 3 of 16 came from the west so obviously there is a low priority/demand to send east schools to the west. I would think ratings and ticket sales had something to do with this as most of the west teams are in sparsely populated regions. The only way to start turning some heads is for the west schools to schedule (and beat) some of these east schools, although that is a whole other thread.

Where did you get that NAU is going to drop football?

I just made it up. It is not official, but how do you make up a $1-8M loss to athletic funding?

That's a lot of money, what's their athletic budget?

That would be aweful, I hate it when shools get rid of athletic progarms, especially football.

I like that we got Cow Poly back. I also like that we got a relative creampuff for HC. Almost the only thing I would kibbitz about would be the fact that HC follows only ONE away game. Traditionally, HC follows an extended road trip. But I guess nobody bothers with that anymore. In addition, I'm not thilled with the bye being so early. I'd prefer for the bye to fall right after the Griz game.
