Portland State Football Releases 2009 Schedule

http://www.goviks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?temp_site=NO&DB_OEM_ID=19300&ATCLID=3692212

The Portland State football program has released its’ 2009 football schedule and will host six home games for the first time since 2004. The Vikings, who travel to face Oregon State in the season opener, will play eight Big Sky Conference games, and host non-conference games against UC Davis and Southern Oregon.

The Viking season begins on Sept. 5 at Oregon State. It will be the second straight year the Vikings face a Pac-10 school, and the fifth time in the last five seasons. PSU played at newly renovated Reser Stadium in the 2005 opener, losing 41-14.

Portland State’s home opener will be on Sept. 12, when the Vikings host Division II Southern Oregon.

PSU’s first Big Sky Conference game will be a doozy, as the Vikings travel to national finalist Montana on Sept. 19. Portland State and Head Coach Jerry Glanville will be looking for a first-ever Big Sky win in Missoula.

The Vikings come home to face another big-time program when they battle 2008 Big Sky regular season champion and playoff participant Weber State at PGE Park on Sept. 26. That game is followed by another home contest, Oct. 3, against Sacramento State.

Other Big Sky road games are at Northern Colorado (Oct. 10), Eastern Washington (Oct. 31) and Idaho State (Nov. 14). PSU hosts Northern Arizona (Oct. 17) and Montana State (Nov. 7) in Big Sky games.

The third non-conference game is Oct. 24 when the Vikings will battle regional rival UC Davis at PGE Park.

Portland State will have an open date on Nov. 21. The NCAA playoffs begin on Nov. 28.

All Portland State home games are scheduled for 1:05 p.m. at PGE Park. However, all times are tentative. Television and radio schedules will be announced at a later date.

Portland State comes off a 4-7 season, 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference. PSU has 16 returning starters and 41 returning letterwinners.

Kickoff times, television and radio schedules will be announced at a later date. For 2009 Viking season ticket information, fans can call 503.725.5627.

Two thoughts:
1) Since when is Southern Oregon D-II? I thought they were D-III or NAIA. So they're the same level as Western Oregon?
2) Glad we got the UC Davis game at home. Shall we assume this sets up another home-and-home series with the Aggies?

We have played UC-Davis so much recently I didn't even notice them on that list. Seems PSU is playing it smart though, the farthest we will travel is to Colorado.

Jerry Glanville has been leading us to assume we are making improvements for next season, he seems very confident. With all the returners on offense that Southern Oregon game could get really really bad. :?

I hope it does. Don't get me wrong. I don't want PSU to run it up, but I think they need that experience. Score a ton of points so that some of the lesser used guys can get some early game time. The wideouts could use the extra time to fight for a job.

+1 (as the kids say)

No doubt. Keep the engine on full with all three teams in the offense.

This is a make or break year for JG. Get the guys who may be in the game due to injury meaningful reps in this game.

Oregonian just posted it too.

The Portland State Vikings will open the 2009 college football season on Sept. 5 against Oregon State at Reser Stadium in Corvallis, and then play their home opener on Sept. 12 against Division II Southern Oregon at PGE Park.

Here's the full slate:

2009 Portland State Football Schedule

Sept. 5 @ Oregon State, TBA
Sept. 12, SOUTHERN OREGON, 1:05 p.m.
Sept. 19, @ Montana, 12:05 p.m. PT
Sept. 26, WEBER STATE, 1:05 p.m.
Oct. 3, SACRAMENTO STATE, 1:05 p.m.
Oct. 10, @ Northern Colorado, TBA
Oct. 17, NORTHERN ARIZONA, 1:05 p.m.
Oct. 24, UC DAVIS, 1:05 p.m.
Oct. 31, @ Eastern Washington, TBA
Nov. 7, MONTANA STATE, 1:05 p.m.
Nov. 14, @ Idaho State, TBA

(home games in CAPS)

If the Vikings hope to contend for a Big Sky Conference championships, they going to have to prove it in the first two weeks of conference play, taking on Montana in Missoula on Sept. 19, followed by a home date with defending champion Weber State on Sept. 26.

Talk about a schedule that's top heavy.

The Vikings, coming off a season in which they went 4-7 overall and 3-5 in conference, play a total of six home games -- the first time they've had that many games scheduled downtown since 2004.

Vikings Football Game With Eastern Washington Moves To Seattle

Looks like Weber has done a major reshuffling of coaches. The OL coach now takes over the whole offense and becomes asst. head coach to boot. Hard to believe anything will change much, though personality does enter in here.

And by the way, Southern Oregon's an good NAIA team moving up to D-II. If it weren't for OSU, I'd say we were following Montana in scheduling. After last year, I'm glad we are.

I'm so there.

We should try to get more PSU folks up there than EWU folks.

Me too. Let's pack that stadium!

Probably quite a few, considering that Seattle is the number one destination for jobseekers who want to stay in the NW.

It'll be very interesting to see how well attended that game is. I'll be Amtraking it to that game. Tailgate on the train up there. Tailgate before the game at Qwest. Tailgate on the train home. Yikes!

Eagles Release Schedule With a Seattle Twist

Eastern will host Portland State in Seattle at Qwest Field as one of five home games on EWU's 2009 football schedule

March 26, 2009

The Eastern Washington University football team will play five home games in the 2009 season, and one of them will take place across the Cascade Mountains on Halloween Day.

The Eagles will host Portland State on Oct. 31 in a Big Sky Conference game that begins at 1 p.m. at Qwest Field in Seattle. It’s believed to be the first time in Eastern’s 100-year football history that it has played a game in Seattle. The Eagles will play their first game in the Puget Sound area since Oct. 30, 1982, when Eastern won at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.

Eastern will also play home games against Western Oregon (Sept. 5), Northern Colorado (Sept. 19), Weber State (Oct. 10) and Montana State (Oct. 24) at Woodward Field in Cheney, Wash.

There are nearly 11,000 Eastern alumni who reside in the Puget Sound area in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. More than 16,000 reside west of the Cascade Mountains. Among current Eastern students, nearly 1,500 are from King, Snohomish and Pierce counties, and a total of nearly 2,500 are from cities west of the Cascade Mountains.

"We are excited to be able to bring Eagle football to Seattle where we have a tremendous alumni base," said Eastern athletic director Bill Chaves. "The game will also afford our team the opportunity to play in an NFL stadium."

Ticket prices for the EWU-PSU game, as well as season tickets for the four home games in Cheney, will be announced at a later date.

Eastern’s season-opening game with Western Oregon on Sept. 5 has been tentatively scheduled to start at 6:05 p.m. Pacific time, while the Northern Colorado and Portland State games have been tentatively scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Times for Weber State and Montana State will be announced.

Following the game against the NCAA Division II Wolves, Eastern will play at Pacific 10 Conference member California on Sept. 12. After hosting Northern Colorado, Eastern will play at Sacramento State on Sept. 26 and Idaho State on Oct. 3.

Eastern plays defending Big Sky Conference co-champions Weber State and Montana on back-to-back games on Oct. 10 and 17, respectively, with the Eagle-Grizzly showdown taking place in Missoula, Mont. Eastern hosts Montana State for Homecoming on Oct. 24 before spending Halloween in Seattle against PSU on Oct. 31.

Following a bye on Nov. 7, Eastern closes the season with a pair of road games -- a non-conference game at Southern Utah on Nov. 14 in Cedar City, Utah, and a league game Nov. 21 at Northern Arizona.

This is looking to be the best schedule in years if you're a PSU supporter.

Six home games. One in Corvallis. One in Seattle.

Hell, go to Missoula, and you'll see nine games in person this year.

Looking very forward to the train ride up for the Eastern game. Should be a fun ride up, and back.

No kidding. There have not too many years when we've had two road games so close to Portland. Hope Eastern makes a habit of scheduling PSU into Seattle ever other year.

Makes one realize how nice it is to be in the Pac-10. They have all those road games that are much easier to get to than Bozeman, Pocatello, Ogden or Greeley.

Not to mention, much more desirable places to go to. ;-)
