Weber State basketball attendance highest since 1995-96

Posted on February 26, 2012 by Roy Burton

Weber State is enjoying its highest basketball attendance season since 1995-96, averaging 6,771 fans per game at the Dee Events Center.

The Wildcats ranked 12th among schools in the western United States as of Feb. 22, according to WSU media relations guru Paul Grua. That puts Weber State ahead of Pac-12 schools like UCLA, Stanford and USC.

It says something about the state of in-state hoops, however, that Weber State ranks 12th out of 64 western schools, but only fourth in the state of Utah. BYU (14,296) ranks second, Utah State (9,899) is sixth and Utah (7,771) is ninth.

Montana (3,239), ranked 32nd, was the next highest Big Sky school after Weber State, though that number will climb after a season-high 7,003 fans watched the Grizzlies handle in-state rival Montana State on Saturday. Another strong crowd will be on hand for tonight’s showdown.

The leader? That would be New Mexico, averaging 14,336 fans at The Pit, where some bracketologists have projected the Big Sky tournament champion could be sent for the early rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
