*EDIT* Practices start Wednesday. Of all the True/Red-Shirt Freshman/Transfers, who does everyone think has the best shot to see significant playing time or make the biggest impact this season?

I think the answer to this question lies in where we have the biggest need I.E. what were our biggest losses from last season. to that end even though there are some sensational athletes on that list you need to look at who is most likely to step into a role that we have an immediate need. Butorac has a chance to be a starter at LG as a RS Frosh. C. Mitchell might have been one of the biggest standouts from Spring Ball, but with B. Kaufman, Edwards, Herd, and Hart all solid in those positions he might be more of a slot receiver type player maybe just for his first year or two. Bronson might also be another player who will get some serious PT as perhaps the backup or co-starter with M. Brown. Another area to look is at CB, any chance one of the RS Frosh starts there? Maybe not likely but worth mentioning since both starters were lost.

And... then there is the injury factor. A true freshman may get called upon in the event of an injury to a key player, but we are so deep at most positions that may not happen.

Beau will try to redshirt all of the true frosh, but because there is a little less depth at their positions (?), I think the following true frosh have a chance to see action: David Delgado DL, Thomas Gomez OL, Cameron Kerkar, Punter, and Joradan Tonani, DB.

Some of the incoming frosh will be on special teams...with limited scholarships can't afford to rs all freshmen.

While I'm logged in here and probably won't be back too often, I'll jump in and talk for a moment about yesterday's practice. It's really hard to tell too much early on as yesterday's workout was without pads and players are spread out over all of the practice fields.

Probably the most important piece of information I gleaned is that CB Jeremy Chaten does a really good impersonation of my "giddy-up horse" call. So maybe I will record him doing it and throw it in the broadcast sometime. Seriously. Also Mario Brown thinks it should be "giddy-up Rhino" if Bronson breaks one. Think I'll have to clear that with Bronson first.

There were a couple of things that did catch my eye. Nick Edwards made several real nice catches in traffic. Anthony Vitto appeared to throw the ball with more zip than I remembered from last year. That's just my first reaction after seeing him throw maybe 12 times. I didn't get a chance to ask either Coach Baldwin or Coach Hill about that, so my observation could be way off. Bo Levi threw a beauty of a 50 or so yarder to Tyler Hart. Can't remember who was covering, but the coverage was good. It was just a perfect throw.

Thanks for the update Larry. I'm glad you mentioned Nick Edwards. The kid is a work horse and it seems to me that he really came into his own in the playoffs last year. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do this year. The receiver corps is going to be scary this year! I can't wait to watch.

Penelli is out. Best to him and his new direction.

Sucks to hear, but he did kind of get a bum deal. He was brought in thinking he was going to be the guy, then they brought in BLM right after. Best of luck to him, and I hope he gets a chance to start wherever he goes.

This increases Vernon Adams chances of winning the starting job next year after redshirting. He looks really promising, and has the potential to be a 4 year starter like Nichols. He's a dual threat guy similar to McGhee as well, but with better ball-carrying skills IMO. It'll be interesting to see if/when the offense belongs to Vernon, what kind of wrinkles Baldwin and co. will add to better suit his skill set. The gun-spread is the perfect offense to tweak for a QB who has some speed and can run as well as sling it.

Sorry to hear that, but Greg probably wanted an opportunity to play for 2 years and he probably wasn't going to get that. Best of luck to him.

With BLM and Gauthier both Seniors this year, that leaves only Vitto and Adams as the only QB's on our roster for next season, unless they move Burgett back to QB......which I doubt, considering it'll be his Senior season. Looks like we'll need to recruit another QB this off-season. Should be a very interesting battle for starting QB in 2012.

EWUranger,
I just noticed your post concerns of another QB. Maybe you are aware by now, we have another QB, Nelson Fishback, he wears #17, and he along with Vernon Adams, I think will be competing for position on the club. I have seen both of these young men, they can both throw very accurate balls, and with a lot of force behind their throws. :thumb: :thumb:

I kept looking at Cory Mitchell,WR, catching the balls thrown to him, as someone said earlier, our Quarterbacks are going to be very scary along with our WR this year. We have a running back that will be great for the team D.Bronson, he really runs very hard, will make Mario Brown, a better RB.  . We have Freshman Jordan Talley from Jesuit HS in Oregon, he looks very promising. Now just have to get healed, so I can return to the :practices.   :thumb: :thumb: :thumb Time for bed. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

I am aware of Fishback but haven't been able to see him play at all. But yeah, I did forget about him. I think he might have been a "preferred" walk-on this year, and could have a shot at a scholarship next year with only Vitto, Adams, and himself as returning QB's......unless I am missing someone.

no, as of right now those are the 3 qbs who should be returning in 2012. so yes I would imagine they will be either recruiting another HS qb to come in or perhaps looking at a transfer. still I am very confident with those guys that should be returning next season. All 3 of them have looked sharp.

With Pulu not eligible this season, does anyone else think big David Delgado will have a shot at some playing time, even if it is just a situational thing? I know we have some depth at the DT position, but it seems other than Renard we are a bit under-sized there. Really wouldn't mind seeing a 300 pound tackle playing aside a 320 pound tackle.

Eastern’s starters are more solidified on offense. However, the Eagles are keeping a keen eye on the running back position, where EWU must replace two-time All-American and 1,000-yard rusher Taiwan Jones. The Eagles will fill that spot by committee, featuring sophomore Mario Brown, senior Darriell Beaumonte and Washington transfer Demitrius Bronson. However, Baldwin has also been impressed by a pair of true freshmen – Jordan Talley from Portland, Ore., and Quincy Forte from Fairfield, Calif.

“I think our freshman class is very good top to bottom,” Baldwin said. “You trust your recruiting, but you never truly know until they get on campus. Specifically, Forte and Talley have come in and have not only showed some athleticism, but they are picking up the system and competing. They are definitely not ready as freshmen a week or two into practices, but you can always get an idea of which players need to redshirt and others who very well might play this year. You are always going to have some freshmen who fit into some roles, and those two players might be in that boat.”

Interesting......I feel we are fairly deep at running back this season, but maybe one of these guys gets a shot at some PT this season? I could maybe see one or the other not redshirting, but I doubt both of them play as true freshman.
