2012-2013 Season

I wasn't able to here the entire Coach's show on Monday but from what I did hear it sounds lack there is a great deal of optimism heading into to next season. Coach Hayford seemed to give high praise to both Venky Jois and Danny Powell. It sounds like Powell maybe playing shooting guard next year. It also sounds like Seiferth is extremely athletic, and he compared Reuter's intensity and toughness to LaRon Griffen. Justin Crosgile sounds like he has the ability to make a nice transition into next years starting point guard. Daniel Hill also sounds like a good point guard for the future with great shooting ability. Coach Hayford also announced the team will play this summer in Canada for a few games. Any thoughts on how the roster might round out next year? Here's what I'm guessing/hoping for:

Point Guard: Justin Crosgile; Daniel Hill; Preston Wynne (my hope is for him to join the team as a walk on)
Shootin Guard: Danny Powell; unknown; Bryce Leavitt (Sounds likes the kid from Kennewick could sign with the eags), Tyler Harvey (walk on)
Wing: A healthy Collin Chiverton; Parker Kelly (hopeful scholarship); possible transfer like Mathis Monninghoff
Forward: Venky Jois; Justin Reuter
Forward/Center: Martin Seiferth; Jordan Hikert; Frederik Jorg

I realize this is a lot of wishful thinking, but it's fun to think about the possibilities for next year!

I heard the show too and as a result am much more optimistic. I think we make a big jump next year in conference wins over the one game improvement we made this year. I think we finish in top two in league. Eagfan, you didnt include the two seniors in your depth chart Forbes and Winfred? Are they coming back?

I am definitely optimistic about the future of the program, but i am still on the fence about next year. We lose a ton of talent and scoring from this year, a ton. I think the new guys coming into the program will do really well, but next year, they will be new guys. If we had more coming back next year combined with our incoming freshman and transfers I think we would be just fine. I think next year will be somewhat of a rebuilding year, but a promising year for years to come. I hope we do well, but I think we will be very young and inexperienced so it could go either way.

We also have to remember, the Griz have most of there talent back next year and they won the conference this year. Cherry and Jamar are both back which will make them really difficult to beat. Also, Weber could be really good next year if Lillard doesn't go to the NBA, but even if he does, they will still be good.

I am not sure about Kevin Winford or Jeffrey Forbes coming back. This is just a guess on my part, due to the recruits they have plus currently recruiting Bryce Leavitt as well as others. Mathis Monninghoff joining the program is also just a hope. He hasn't announced he is transferring. Although, his playing time at G.U. seems to be lessening by the game. He would be an awesome addition, he's 6-7 and has guard/wing skills and can also shoot threes extremely well. Also, he's from Germany!

I would certainly hope Winford and Forbes come back. They did make a positive contribution when given a chance and we need their leadership.
Parker came on strong at the last part of the season and hopefully Hick will be more consistent, at scoring not fouling, next year. If we change out most of the team every year when do you get some consistency?
I'm also curious about changes in the coaching staff. Ehlo was not on the bench after the end of the regular season.

I think we'll see a starting line of Crosgile, Forbes, Chiverton, Hickert and Seiferth although I am not super confident about the 4/5 spots. Coach is really high on Crosgile who has a lot of experience at the D1 level and playing in a powerhouse basketball conference with Saint Joseph's. Forbes is not an offensive dynamo, but he is a quality player and really makes a tremendous difference on defense. Chiverton played pretty well this year and showed signs of improving his non-shooting game down the stretch, and that's all inspite of nagging foot and back injuries. I think its safe to expect big things from Chiverton this season.

At the 4/5 spots the Eagles only have Jaylen Henry and Jordan Hickert who have played this season and will be returning. Henry didn't get much time on the court but is a solid rebounder and could develop into a solid post player as well. Hickert's really wild, but is a good shooter and plays with a ton (too much?) effort. Seiferth has some experience with a major D1 program as well and by all accounts should at least compete for the starting line up this season.

Off the bench expect Kevin Winford to be the first guard off the bench, subbing in for either 1/2 spots. He had a down year, but he is a baller, don't count him out.

Regarding Parker Kelly, he's a solid shooter, but not a very good defender and that will keep his time limited. Its one of the reasons he would benefit from a red-shirt year. It would allow him to bulk up and work on his complete game.

All in all I think we have a ton to be excited about for next season!
