20 Players - Only 1 QB: Bowe Merin (as already mentioned in the recruiting thread)

We did however land Jordan Pulu. :thumb:

Spring practice begins in late March for the Eagles, and Baldwin is already looking forward to seeing how the competition shakes out at quarterback. Junior-to-be Anthony Vitto has been in the program for three seasons already, and 2011 freshman redshirt Vernon Adams was impressive last fall en route to winning EWU’s Scout Team Offensive Player of the Year award.

“Vitto will be taking snaps as No. 1 when we go into spring ball,” Baldwin said. “I’m excited for Anthony to have that chance. He’s shown great improvement, especially in the last year with what he was able to do last spring and definitely in the fall. He started to really separate himself as a quarterback. I’m excited to see what he can do.

“Vernon is going to come up and do some great things and compete for the position. We also have a freshman coming in, and there will be a fourth and maybe a fifth player added to our roster. We’re just not sure on that yet. But as a far as the two players we have on campus now, I feel comfortable with the way they will compete this spring.”

Still looking to snag a transfer? Interesting.

I like what I see...some big names and even some 3 star recruits (Bruce, Wiggins) and 2 star recruits (Griffin, Pulu).

Glad to see some lineman and db's on the list.

Looks to be a great class...here is the spokesman writeup.

Looks like we're thinking we might get 2 drop downs at QB. I'm guessing as soon as one of them learns the other is coming - it will only end up being one. I also imagine that we only got one in this class due to it not taking a rocket scientist that we appear to be in the hunt for just that.

I kinda feel like we shot ourselves in the foot as far as recruiting goes at the QB position. If players and their families think we're always looking for a drop down versus really seriously developing the kids that are currently in the position at QB, the "smart" ones will look to other opportunities - perhaps.

I hope Anthony and Vernon stay the course and win out over a drop down. I say that now anyhow...

Ya...the QB position will be our biggest challenge next year, hopefully Adams or Vitto steps up, as they will have a TON of weapons next year, i've heard good things about both. I guess we will see about a potential drop down as well. Our new QB (whoever wins the job) will have a lot to do with our success next year as we do have a lot of returning talent.

What are the chances Nick Montana comes here?

Man, I hope not. After watching him crap down his leg for UW, I don't want him OR his helicopter dad.

At the very least it would be some great publicity. :thumb: Plus, he's better than Nate Montana. 8-)

I think if Nate Montana could/were to be named a starter - Nick Montana would leap to EWU in seconds flat. It would be all the hype to have them playing against each other and in the same conference. Well, I say that in jest as the Spokesman usually doesn't hype us up at all. Though, Allen seems to be doing far greater than his predecessor thus far!

I would wager that Nick is coming since it sounds like Baldwin says a 4th is coming and maybe a 5th. Though if whoever?!?!? says he's coming - that 5th will drop off and find another team. I still think we ought to not get all dumbed down on the thought that only a drop down can lead us at this point. IMO.

Perhaps a dropdown, perhaps not. Malik Watson didn't end up signing with Montana... I don't know if he has signed anywhere else, but maybe he's still an option that Beau is trying to work out. At least I hope so.

I really like the looks of this class. I think we really helped ourselves in getting some secondary help. I wouldn't be surprised if several of these cornerbacks and safeties play as true freshman. The studs of this class are Dalis Bruce, Jordan Pulu, and the Gossmeyer kid. I'm sure a few of these guys are props and will need to make it through that first year but if and when they do...look out. I'm still holding out for a QB transfer but I really like the looks of the Bowe Merin kid for the future along with Vernon Adams. Go Eagles!!! :thumb:

Again, I'm still not understanding where you are getting this. We've had exactly one "drop-down" QB play as a starter since Blankenship in 2002. One kid, and all of a sudden we are "Drop-down U"? Coincidently, EWU has another Payton Award Winner so it seems the coaches were correct in Spring 2010 after all.

Nichols and Meyer were both kids recruited out of High School to play at EWU. Both had stellar careers. Nichols was a four year starter. Why on earth would the fact that we've had one transfer QB dissuade kids from coming here? That's nonsense.

The QB situation will work itself out, Eastern has always had a good QB. There is a reason we signed Vitto 3 years ago and Adams last year, they can both play and I'm sure the situation will work out well. Vitto has been in the program for 3 years, he knows the offense and based on everything stated yesterday, he will have the first shot at the starting position. Adams is very athletic, he can run and has great speed. If he throws the ball well (I really haven't seen him) he has the makings to be another stud QB at EWU. If we sign someone else, or a drop down comes here, great, they can compete with our current QB's, if not, great as well, I have trust in the players we have and our coaches.

On another note, congratulations to all the players and their families that signed with Eastern yesterday. Note only did you sign with a great football team and program, you will be attending a fantastic university. Best of luck in your next 4-5 years and we will see you on the field in the fall!

We also recruited BLM out of HS, and we were his second choice behind June Jones.

I kind of miss Vic's input here. He sees more practices than the rest of us put together.
Hey Vic, what do you think about our QB situation?

I know, I miss his posts too. Hasn't posted since late October, last I saw him was at the PSU game. Hope he's okay.

My seats are just behind his at BBall games and he is always there, and I talked to him for a while at the football announcement on Wed. He seemed to be in fine health.
