2012 Fall Camp

Fox40News showed up at the first day of training camp. They interviewed Coach Sperbeck and Safron and Badger. It was nice to get some airtime. Sperbeck acknowledged that last year was a disappointment after higher expectations. Safron and Badger are very positive about this year though. I wonder if having Safron do the offensive interview means he's the leading candidate for QB?

Safron is the starting QB as of now. It seems like Magleby is injured he was not practicing while I was at the first practice. I trust Sperbeck.
Is Safron actually attempting passes to receivers between the hashes or is he still sticking to his fade route receivers? I sure hope he was able to work on some things this offseason if he is the one who gets the nod. Still 3 weeks until game 1 so plenty of camp time left.

Who is getting the most reps as the primary receivers? What about the left side of the OL?

If Magleby truly is hurt, we're in trouble. I like Safron's mobility, but his arm is going to get us in trouble.

SD, you hit the nail on the head. When he drops back there's a 75% chance that he'll either scrable or throw the fade route, often conservatively using the sideline as a protector (see Facebook videos for the 2012 version of this). The other 25% of the time he's grounding a ball at the receiver's feet on a slant or bubble screen.

I think Garrett could be a good weapon for us, but only in small doses, and mostly with his legs. I'm not convinced he can be effective through the air. Hope I'm wrong though!

Yeah I saw that and cringed. Fortunately a pic of Peterson in the classroom with the QB’s was posted a little while ago so with new guidance hopefully Safron can develop his game.

Per SH's thread as well as a Hornetsports release:

The rivalry between the offense and defense was visible in the finals segments of the evening practice but it was a kicker who brought the team together. After the two sides each claimed a victory in the first drives, junior Edward Ruhnke split the uprights from 52-yards out to end the night.

A good start for the kicking game. Hope it keeps up.

Ok, sorry for being late to the party on this, but what the heck happened to Jake Geringer??? I've been searching through the threads here and also searched Google, but I'm not seeing anything about him leaving the program. He's not on the current roster, but I did find some ink linking him to Spring practices.

What gives? Did he leave the program? I was expecting this kid to compete for playing time this season.

I don’t think he was listed on the spring roster. My guess is he left when he realized the coaches were putting in a system that he wouldn’t fit into. His Rivals profile had him listed as a “pro style” QB which would have fit the Hornets offensive mindset pre-2011 before Sperbeck got retarded and let OC Adams try to implement the Pistol. It’s anyone guess as to what really happened here.

Well, according to the stats, Geringer particpated in the Spring scrimmages which took place 4 months ago. I wonder what could have happened in between now and then and why it hasn't been divulged. Don't they usually release a presser when a player leaves the program or misses the season for personal reasons or injury? Something like that seems to have happened, but no word?

http://www.hornetsports.com/sports/football/release.asp?release_id=10344" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Mason Magleby 9-20-2-97-1; Garrett Safron 7-9-1-86-1; Collin Burnett 1-2-0-5-0; Jake Geringer 3-4-0-10-0.

I was told Garinger suffered an injury in Spring Camp of 2011, remember he enrolled early out of HS, that affected his throwing motion or arm strength. So I beleive he left on his own, since he likely would have been low on the depth chart.

I wish his the best and hope he succeeds in football and life.

That's too bad to hear. Best of luck to him.

SH, Edwards is gone, he is even listed on Occidental's roster:

We won't be missing much with Edwards gone.

Thanks for the update, SD.

Theoretically, Edwards could 4-2-4 it back up here, but given your last statement, he'll probably 4-2-4 it somewhere else where he feels he'll have a shot.
