2012 Men’s Recruit Class Overview
Here is the list of official incoming recruits (fall class listed) with their stats listed and some observations and thoughts I have. Stats less than 0.5/game not included, listed in alphabetical order by last name:
Dreon Barlett: G, FR, 6’-3”, 170 lbs
Barlett is a solid land by Katz. He put up good scoring numbers his senior year and looks to shoot the ball well. He had a lot of trips to the charity stripe so I hope that means he has the ability to drive to the hoop and create action. The Hornetsports release says that he will fill the swingman position for Katz. The question now is will he play this season or be redshirted. If he impresses the coaches with his scoring ability, I think it would be hard pressed for the coaches to sit him a year.

Cody Demps: G, FR, 6’-4”, 175 lbs
A good get for Katz and Demps could provide a solid 4 years in The Nest if he can make a successful adjustment to D-1 hoops. Demps could be redshirted next season due to a crowded backcourt but if he is impressive enough in preseason he could see some playing time, especially if Estrada fails to stay healthy.

Mikh McKinney: PG, SO, 6’-1”, 165 lbs
McKinney is a decent addition at PG who should be more than capable of filling in for Garrity when he is getting rest. McKinney does not have a redshirt available for use so he will see action next season. He has respectable shooting numbers so he very well may see some action in tandem with Garrity especially if he can become a viable threat from long range.

Ryan Okwudibonye: C, JR, 6’-8”, 230 lbs
Okwudibonye didn’t put up big numbers and he only average 10.9 minutes per game. This seems like a reach by Katz but you never know how things turn out. I believe Okwud has a redshirt available but his addition shores up some depth behind Veteto and at a bare minimum Okwud can clog up the paint and grab some boards. Veteto only average 18.8 minutes per game last season so Okwud might see some considerable time.

Joey Quigley: F, JR, 6’-8”, 210 lbs
Quigley will probably be used for the swingman role of Katz’ system. I think he has a redshirt available but I couldn’t confirm it. If he does it might be possible it gets used this season so he can have 2 seasons to fill in for Eberhard after he graduates. It does look like Quigley can be an asset on the defensive side of the ball due to his rebounding and stealing ability. He won’t be a deep ball threat but it looks as though he can feed the ball to the open man even though his high turnover average is concerning. There looks to be some decent potential with Quigley and hopefully he can develop into a solid contributor.

Jordan Salley: F, JR, 6’-6”, 230 lbs
Salley was recruited out of high school by Montana State but wasn’t cleared to play for reasons I don’t know. Salley had injury issues in the past but hopefully that won’t be an issue when he continues his hoops career as a Hornet. I think he has a redshirt available for use but I doubt it will be used as Salley will provide some much needed depth behind Dickson in the 4 spot. I expect to see Salley receive considerable playing time and if he can’t become a scoring threat, hopefully he can provide a defensive presence near the glass.

Overall Comments/Thoughts
Overall I think this is a good recruiting class brought in by Katz and the coaches. It has a lot of potential that can hopefully be developed over the long run as well as some key pieces to fill in the immediate needs. Some much needed depth was added in key areas and the class is evenly balanced with 3 underclassmen (2 HS recruits and 1 JC SO) and 3 upperclassmen JC transfers. I’m still concerned about the depth at center but we’ll just have to see how it plays out.
