Spring Football Practice Opens April 9

http://www.goviks.com/news/2012/3/27/FB_0327122954.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Portland State football team will open spring practice on Monday, April 9, at Stott Community Field. The Vikings will practice 14 times - each Monday, Wednesday and Friday through May 9 - then play the annual spring game on May 12 at Jesuit High School.

2012 will be the third season for Viking Head Football Coach Nigel Burton. Last year, Burton engineered one of the biggest turnarounds of any NCAA I FCS school in the country, leading the Vikings to a 7-4 record, 5-3 in the Big Sky Conference. PSU saw a five-game improvement in the win column, posting the best record by a Viking team since 2006.

Burton will have 51 letterwinners returning in 2012, including 13 starters. The Vikings have seven starters returning on offense, four on defense, as well as both the kicker and punter. Spring practice will offer an opportunity to see key position battles for the Vikings at quarterback, running back, defensive line and safety - the areas where PSU had the most players graduate.

Top returning Vikings include consensus All-American kicker Zach Brown, second team All-Big Sky linebacker Ian Sluss, fourth-year linebacker Joel Sisler and Khalil Bass, leading wide receiver Justin Monahan, special teams star and receiver Nevin Lewis, tight ends Gage Loftin and Kalua Noa, offensive linemen Mitch Gaulke, Kyle Ritt, Mitch Van Dyk and Joey Esposito, defensive linemen Julious Moore and Bryant Long, cornerback Mike Williams and punter Thomas Duyndam among others. PSU should also have five new transfer signees take part in spring ball: QB Collin Ramirez, RB DJ Adams, S David Edgerson, CB Dennis Fite and DT Zack Ka'ahanui.

A complete look at the Viking spring prospectus, players and team information will be out on April 3.

Thanks, great information! Coach Burton really is changing the culture for the better on the Park Blocks! :)

Great run down.

Williams is the vet in the secondary. Ugh.

No. 10 was the number to be as Portland State opened spring practice in upbeat fashion

Burton pleased as Vikings reload pistol

Linebackers, offensive line provide Portland State with spring leadership

Visited the Park Blocks a few times this last week to watch practice, and if you haven't had the opportunity to do so, take a late lunch and sneak over. Sadat Sulleyman, #48, DE, 6-2 240 Fr., is an amazing talent. Also, linebackers are showing why they are the cream of the crop on this defense. I don't know who #15, quarterback, is (maybe Thomas Carter ?), but he is showing some real agility at the position. It seems that the emphasis this last week has been on defense, particularly on the line of scrimmage. Go Viks! :mrgreen:

No. 15 is Penn (Carter's 18). Penn is indeed supposed to be "agile". The question is, can he throw? Was Ramirez taking any snaps?

Ramirez looked good swinging out in the flat to pass, but certainly didn't demonstrate the speed or running skills of #15. I know that #15 on the roster is listed as Paris, but I didn't think true H.S. recruits could be practicing with the team unless they were grayshirting, and because not all the numbers of the players during practice matched up with their roster numbers I assumed it was not Penn. I may be wrong. Paris may have graduated early! All the QB's shared about equal number of snaps, with maybe Nick Green not quite as many. And by the way, Zach Brown has a monster leg!

Well, well, well. An actual story in the Big Oh.

I know this is a little off topic, but check out the picture of Safety David Edgerson taken at the Nike campus yesterday. If he hadn't been wearing a uniform I'm not sure I would have been be able to pick him out! ha!

Portland State football: Questions remain, but Vikings on right track heading into spring game

What a beautiful day for the spring game! None of quarterbacks separated themselves today. Even Carter is in the mix - had great moments and then made some bad decisions. The linebacker corp are quite good and the 6-5 Fite at conerback is the tallest corner I have ever seen. All in all, I think the Viks are in good shape, just need a QB to step up and take the job!
