Hornet softball has opened the Big Sky Era with a 3-2 win over UTEP at the Fresno State Softball Kickoff today. This gives Sac the best overall record in the Sky (because everyone else either has a loss or hasn't played yet).

SO RHP Caitlin Brooks allowed no earned runs over seven strong innings, and JR SS Yesenia Alcala was 2-3 with a two-run double with two out in the fourth. The Hornets got going from the opening pitch with a leadoff triple by SR OF Kelli Frye, who was singled home by SR 3B Emily McCormick. Sac left 10 on the basepaths, including leaving the bases juiced in the second. The Hornets' Big Four (Frye, Alcala, McCormick, and SR 1B Molly Smith) were a combined 8-15 with a double, triple, and three RBI. The Lady Hornets DO have some work to do, as the lower part of the order went a combined 1-13 with six whiffs. Brooks, last year's freshman phenom, allowed leadoff hits in the sixth and seventh, but worked her way out of those jams. She surrendered eight hits over seven innings, walking three and striking out a career-high nine. Brooks may be in line for a long rest as she threw 150 pitches.

Tomorrow, Sac faces Southern Miss at 9 and UC Riverside at 11:15. On Sunday, the Hornets close out the tournament with a neutral-site Causeway game and one against host Fresno State.

Games through today place Hornet softball at 4-4.

At the Fresno State tournament, Sac beat UTEP and Southern Miss (both games 3-2) and lost to UC Riverside 2-1. Sac lost its home opener Tuesday to UOP 3-0. Today, the Hornets split a double header at St. Mary's, winning 6-3 in 11 innings and losing the nightcap 2-0. The Hornets close out the short road swing Tuesday afternoon at San Jose State (2:30 first pitch). There is no true home stand until the Capital Classic 3/15-17, followed by a few more home games. The next home games are a Causeway double header 2/27.

On the mound, the Hornets are led by Caitlin Brooks and her impressive 3-1 record and 1.53 ERA. All four of Brooks' games are complete, and she has an opposing batting average of only .200. The other pitchers have decent ERAs of around 2-2.5, but few innings pitched; we seem to be relying heavily on Brooks. Kaitlyn Yerby is 0-1, 2.00 ERA, but is giving up hits at a .321 clip in seven IP. Taylor Stroud is 1-1, 2.15 ERA in 13 IP, while Jennifer Hartman is 0-1, 1.81 ERA with 6 IP. There have been no relief appearances as of yet. Brooks was named the first ever Big Sky Pitcher of the Week for games played 2/4-11.

At the plate, Kelli Frye is leading the way at .367 in 30 ABs. She is the only Hornet over .300, but Alexis Martinez and Paige Martin are close at .294 and .292 respectively. Martinez, Emily McCormick, and Kortney Solis have each gone yard once. The Hornets have only hit into two double plays, but have only turned one.

In the field, the Hornets have already committed seven errors, but there are no glaring problems at any position as nobody has more than one.

It's early, and therefore hard to peg anyone down as a star or a flop. Overall, it appears that we have a decent pitching staff anchored by Brooks. Unfortunately, our mediocre record seems to be a result of failures at the plate. Of course, that one breakout game at St. Mary's stands out, with three runs scored in the eleventh inning. So, the Hornets CAN hit, it's just a matter of stringing them together. Causeway will be a key indicator of where we'll be in this first season of Big Sky softball.

Hornet Softball stung the opposition enough this week to nail down BOTH Big Sky Conference weekly awards.

First, Caitlin Brooks was named Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season because of her performance in Sac State's 4-1 weekend at Cal Poly's Mustang Classic. This marks the fourth time in the first five weeks of the season that a Hornet is Big Sky Pitcher of the Week. Brooks threw two complete games at the tournament, going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. She gave up a total of six hits and one unearned run in 14.0 innings. Rutgers and CP hit a combined .125 off Brooks, including a whopping ONE extra-base hit. On the year, Brooks has NOT been relieved, and has posted a 7-1 record with a 1.35 ERA. She's given up just 38 hits in 62.0 innings, resulting in an opposing batting average of just .174.

The Big Sky's Player of the Week is Paige Martin. In five games last weekend, Martin hit .500, including a double, two triples, and four RBI. She posted a .778 slugging percentage and .550 on-base percentage. Three of those games were multiple-hit specials for Martin. She only took the collar once. Martin was particularly impressive with RISP, with runners on base, and with two out. She whiffed just twice in 18 official ABs, and played a perfect right field. Martin is batting .383 overall, with a .448 on-base percentage. Her collar against CP snapped a 13-game on-base streak.

The Hornets (12-6) next play at their own Capital Classic Fri-Sun at Shea Stadium.
