2014-15 Conference MVP?

Usually goes to the best player on the conference champion, unless you have a Lillard type player. Could Harvey win the award even if EWU doesn't win the conference?

Top Returning Players:

Tyler Harvey, EWU (conference scoring champ at 21.8/gm, 1st team all-conference)
Mikh McKinney, Sac (5th in scoring at 16.6/gm, 2nd in assists at 4.6/gm, 1st team all-conference)
Quinton Upshur, NAU (7th in scoring at 15.3/gm, newcomer of the year, 1st team all-conference)
Chris Hansen, ISU (6th in scoring at 16.6/gm, 2nd team all-conference)
Joel Bolomboy, WSU (1st in rebounding at 11.0/gm (6th in the nation), Defensive POY, HM all-conference)
Gary Winston, PSU (21st in scoring at 11.3/gm, 13th in assists at 2.7/gm, 2nd team all-conference)

I think that a team must be in the top 3 for one of their players to have a chance at POY. Can EWU do that? I'm not sure they can. The league is fairly wide open this year. Almost anything could happen. The players mentioned all have a chance at it, as long as their team can do well enough.

Joel may prove to be deserving, but I wouldn't count Jeremy out. He is poised for a breakout year. So are Gittens and Hill, for that matter. :twocents:

I like Eastern and think they will be top 3. I think Harvey has to get some serious consideration. Can a defensive beast like Bolomboy get POY without great offensive numbers? McKinney is a good player that will be in the running. I am not sure ISU will be good enough to get Chris "Beyond Glazed" Hansen the award.

I think the MVP will come from Weber, but it could be any one of these 4 guys, in this order.

1 Golden
2 Senglin
3 Bolomboy
4 Gittens

Surprised that your so high on Golden. Have we seen POY like talent in the pick up games or is it because he's a shooter? His shooting percentage at his JC looks less than stellar!

Agree the winner will come from Weber! Surprised to see Golden and Gittens on the list! It's going to be a wide open season. Bolomboy will repeat as defensive player of the year!

Mycats you seem to be surprised a lot.

I would put Gittens #1 on my list. I think he has the confidence to step into the main role on this team. He was the one player against UCLA & Arizona that kept pushing it offensively and did not back down. I need to wait and see with Golden before I make bold prediction.

Add me to the surprised club too! That was a stretch! Has a player gone from JC to POY of the Big Sky?

That doesn't surprise me

I don't ever remember the MVP being a first year guy, either from a JC or out of HS.

The most likely scenario is for it to come from WSU. Best chances to Senglin or Bolomboy. Gittens or Hill could break into the conversation if things fall right for them.

If the MVP does not emerge from WSU, then I would say it will come from NAU, Sac., or EWU, in that order of probability. Dark horses in that second tier race would be UM or MSU. There is a long, long shot that it could be some first year surprise. :twocents:

Not surprisingly I will throw my vote toward the most entertaining player in the BSC....Mikh McKinney....if he ups his stats as much this year as last, it will be a shoe in, no contest, slam dunk....last year in conference games 5th in scoring, 2nd in assists, 7th in steals, 1st in assist/turnover ratio, 5th in mins played plus he was second on the team in rebounds and shot the best fg% (49%) of any point in the BSC....I rest my case

Sacstatesman;

I agree that your guy is a very exciting player, and he had a great season last year. He or your PF will have a strong case if Sac can finish in the top 3. It won't be easy to do this year. I have been thinking, for years, that Sac St has been on the verge of breaking through. Maybe this will be the year. Who knows?

I think you mean our C Eric Stuteville.....he had a big game at your house last year as a true freshman...I think he will have to improve a lot to be considered for that award this year but after this year who knows?? Actually, if we can get Garrity to shoot the ball more he could surprise (he was 4th in the nation in 3pt field goal % last year)....but I agree we have to finish in the top 3 in the standings for any of our guys to have a chance...I just thought I'd throw it out there after seeing half your roster touted for MVP....lol

In addition to the team finishing near the top of the standings, I doubt it will be a player without big PPG numbers. There's much to figure out before these kinds of predictions, such as who's getting starters minutes, but I'm not sure big PPG numbers will bode well for Weber.

While sipping the purple kool aid, I see a lot of parity with the players making up this years squad and believe the offensive numbers could be shared rather equally. Correct me if memory doesn't serve, but I don't remember Senglin having a score first mentatily. I realize he certainly is capable of having a high scoring average but I don't believe he will look for that 20+ PPG, nor do I think he will be in a position where it's needed with the talent Weber supposedly has. Mark me down as another who doesn't believe Bolomboy will all of a sudden be an offensive star. JC transfers? Not likely. Gittens seems most likely to play that role but I'll be disappointed if that is his role without a focus on some of his liabilies from last year.

So, can one of four-five players collectively carrying the scoring load grab this award? I say no.

First things first: the Big Sky coaches always vote for the best player on the regular season champion. To a fault. And each coach gets to nominate a player from their team. So, IF Weber wins the regular season (and I think that is far from a foregone conclusion), then whoever Randy Rahe thinks is his MVP would more than likely win the honor. Tyler Harvey is the one guy I see who could break that trend. If EWU finished second or third, he averaged 25 Ppg and the first place team had a very balanced lineup, i could see Harvey getting the award under those circumstances.

I know that everyone has been doubting My opinion on this, but Bolomboy is going to be a beast this season, both offensively and defensively. Our attack will run through him. He will have the green light to drive or shoot any time he wants. I watched him practicing 3 pointers. With his left hand he was making about 50%. When he switched to his right hand, he was making over 60%. I also watched him working on his inside moves and there was nobody on our team who could even come close to stopping him. Defensively, they had him working against the guards to work on his foot speed and positioning. They had him banging with James on his post D. I think that people are going to be totally shocked when they see his play this year. My opinion is that he is going to be a 20 and 10 guy this year. If Weber can finish on top, which is not certain, I believe that he will be the MVP. :coffee:

Olds, I hope your take on Joel pans out as far as his improvement goes, however, I'm hoping for a different player for this "team." I'd much rather see a consistent 10 PPG to go along with 15+ RPG and 3.5 BPG. As important, I'm hoping for 2 PFPG. Those are MVP numbers in my eyes and have nothing to do with trying to make any of his offensive focus related to the 3 or any opposing defenses able to key on a single player.

Inside-middle-out (Tres-Barry-Bam) has been an effective approach, none having to carry the load every night. It may not be coincidence that post-season success has come on stronger since the "Great Dame" took his talents to the NBA. I've heard much about the talent Rahe has assembled. The proof's in the pudding (whatever that means.). Weber will be best served with balanced scoring and solid D. Balanced scoring wont create a strong MVP argument unless the overall numbers and team impact really shine. I guess I'm not rooting for an individual award at ANY expense to the overall success of the team. So why am i posting on this thread?

I would trade all individual awards for a championship, any day of the week. If it were that simple, I wouldn't hesitate. However, in reality, most of these individual awards come directly from team success. To the victor go the spoils. It has always been that way and it probably won't change anytime soon.

The more teams, in the BSC, to experience success, the better.

There are always winners and losers. Most of us would love to see more winners than losers in the BSC.

More stars on more teams is a sign of better talent being brought into our league. Now we just need to start winning more quality games. The fact that most of these games are played on the road doesn't help, but we need to do it anyway.

I hope that the stars at NAU, Sac, EWU, UNC, MSU, ISU, UI, UM, SUU, and UND continue to shine as brightly as they can. I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together.... Oh, and keep you stick on the ice. ;-)
