Corona del Sol G Tyrell Henderson commits to Portland State

Junior guard Tyrell Henderson, sometimes the forgotten man in Tempe Corona del Sol's fourth consecutive state championship season, gave Portland State a verbal commitment to play basketball.

That gives all five starters on Corona del Sol's championship team future Division I college sports careers.

Senior wing Dane Kuiper signed with New Mexico for basketball, senior forward Cassius Peat is Michigan State-bound for football, and sophomore point guard Alex Barcello and freshman forward/center Marvin Bagley III have multiple Division I basketball offers.

Henderson, a 6-foot-3 combo guard, said he also received offers from Weber State and Northern Arizona University.

"I liked the coaches, the players, the opportunity," Henderson said. "I wanted to get it done now so I can focus on working towards my senior season."

Henderson said he figures he'll take on more of a scoring load next season with Kuiper gone. Henderson averaged about eight points last season, but he was clutch in big games and a defensive stopper.

He performed well this month during the live viewing period for college coaches, playing for Arizona Power Academy with Gilbert Christian's Mitchell Lightfoot and Cameron Satterwhite.

John Ortega, who works Power Academy, called Henderson "Mr. Solid." He was fourth on the team in scoring, second in rebounds, third in assists and third in shooting percentage in tournaments this month.

"He was our glue guy, just like at Corona," Ortega said.

Rincon's Rumel chooses Portland State

Rincon/University High School basketball coach Rich Utter shook his head and laughed when asked how 6-foot-10-inch senior center Brendan Rumel became a Division I basketball prospect.

Rumel has been a tennis standout, of all things, at Rincon. He has been an All-Southern Arizona singles and doubles player for the Rangers, but as he grew from about 6-2 to 6-10, he became a two-sport star.

After averaging 17.8 points and 9.6 rebounds as a junior, Rumel was on the basketball radar for good.

This summer, playing for coach David Thomas’ Arizona/Tucson Power Basketball Academy, he was the MVP of the Phoenix Southwest Main Event, and made the all-tournament team of the Genesis Classic in Calgary, Alberta.

Portland State offered Rumel a scholarship. A day later, the Nevada Wolf Pack did the same. Yale called. But Rumel accepted PSU’s scholarship and returns for his senior season not only as a two-sport standout, but as a stellar student with a 4.0 GPA.

He will be fun to watch.

Wow. Height, a thinking young man and two-sport athlete.

Great work. Sounds like he could be a team leader at center.

David Douglas guard Charles Jones receives offer from Portland State

Portland State University has offered David Douglas guard Charles Jones a full-ride scholarship to play basketball.

The Vikings become the first team to offer Jones, a 6A first-team All-State guard as a junior.

The gifted scorer and explosive athlete had generated a lot of interest, but many schools shied away from an offer until Jones produced grade transcripts and a SAT score. After watching Jones at open gyms throughout the summer and early fall, Portland State pulled the trigger.

"They’ve been watching me for a minute," Jones said. He had been invited to watch Portland State practices to get a feel for the Vikings. On a visit to the school last Thursday, Jones walked away with an offer. "Coach (Tyler) Geving, he asked me back to his office. He said he wanted to offer a full-ride scholarship."

Jones had drawn interest from many schools, including Pac-12 universities. Among those interested in the guard are St. Mary's, Northern Arizona, Dallas University, Cal-State Bakersfield, Oregon State, University of Portland, Pepperdine, Montana, Montana State Idaho and Nevada.

Schools hesitated to offer Jones because of his poor grades during his freshman and sophomore years at David Douglas. Jones says he's hovering around a 3.5 grade point average this year, and believes his SAT score will prompt more offers. Jones receives his SAT score on Oct. 22.

The initial signing period for basketball is November 11. Jones said he'll have his decision ready by November 3 in anticipation of the early signing period.

With Jones leading the way, David Douglas went 21-5 last season.

Two Arizona high school basketball players have signed to play for coach Tyler Geving's Portland State Vikings team for the 2016-17 season via the early signing period.

Tyrell Henderson, a 6-foot-3 combo guard from Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, and Brendan Rumel, a 6-10 forward from Rincon High School in Tucson, are set to join the Vikings next season.

"We are excited about signing two kids who are outstanding students and who are both high character kids," Geving said in a statement. "They are both very disciplined on and off the court and these are traits we are looking for in our recruits. These are two players we expect to be big contributors over the next four years."

Henderson plays for the same Arizona powerhouse that current Vikings guard Calaen Robinson attended.

"Tyrell comes from Corona del Sol program where they have won four consecutive Arizona state championships," Geving said in a statement. "He brings a winning attitude to our program as well as being an outstanding student. Tyrell is a versatile player who takes pride in guarding the other team's top player."

Rumel averaged 17.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.9 blocks as a junior, and he can also shoot the three.

"Brendan has a high ceiling as a player and we feel he is going to make great strides over the next four years," Geving said. "He has the ability to score inside and can also step outside to shoot it. Brendan is another outstanding student with high character. We are looking for him to make a big impact on our program."

Yay!!! Some more outside shooting. I would like to see the Viks get another big body before too long, also.

http://www.goviks.com/news/2016/5/9/viking-mens-basketball-adds-deontae-north-for-2016-17.aspx

Portland State Men's Basketball Coach Tyler Geving has announced the signing of Deontae North to a national letter of intent for the 2016-17 season.

North is a 6-4 guard from South Plains Junior College in Levelland, TX. He averaged 12.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in 2015-16. North also shot .392 from three-point range, making 65 three-pointers in 28 games. North was named first team All-Region and earned Fiesta Bowl tournament MVP honors. The Texans were 21-9 overall, 12-4 in conference play.

"Deontae is a kid we recruited in high school and we have seen him play a lot over the last four years. He is a 6-4 wing who can shoot, score and put it on the floor at this level," said Viking Coach Tyler Geving. "He was also very successful in a very good junior college league in Texas."

Coincidently, Portland State's last two leading scorers both played at Texas junior colleges (DaShaun Wiggins, 12.9 in 2013-14 and 15.7 in 2014-15; and Cameron Forte, 19.2 in 2015-16).

Originally from Corona, CA, North spent his freshman season at Long Beach State, averaging 3.4 points in 12.8 minutes per game.

North attended Centennial High School where he was a first-team Open Division All-CIF selection and MaxPreps.com 3rd team All-State selection. He averaged 18.8 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.6 steals as a senior and was named the Riverside Press-Enterprise Inland Empire Player of the Year. North led his team to a 29-4 record and 10-0 league mark. The Huskies reached the Southern Section Open Division Championship and the Division I CIF Finals.

North is the fifth student-athlete to sign with Portland State for 2016-17. The Vikings have three starters and 10 letterwinners returning.
