2017 Recruiting Class

I can't wait to see what Court does in purple and white, I think Rahe may have stolen one of the best players in the state with him. Doc sounds like a great get too, and the the foreign players are intriguing. Here's to hoping this group pans out to be something special.

The 2 European players are a surprise to me. I added up all the players on scholarship next year and I count 15. So that means to me 2 of our current players will not be back next season. I wonder if they know who they are?

Don't get many 7 footers in this league, and with good reason. Interestingly, and possibly concerning, no stats are given for him. Safe to say he'll be a project that won't contribute much, if at all. Hope I'm proven wrong.

All I can say is YIKES!! This looks like one hell of an awesome class. Court was a complete steal. Rose, BYU, was too busy recruiting Lone Peak that he totally overlooked Pleasant Grove's Riley Court. His loss is our gain. I have heard from a few people that Rose was really regretting not recruiting Court.

Doc...a 3 Star guy from Texas is quite the get and the two European guys are going to be special. I love this class.

This season we are over the scholarship limit as well. There are other ways to help pay for their schooling without giving them a full ride athletic scholarship.

For a "project" it looks like there will be plenty to work with. He doesn't look clumsy or hesitant in the least and looks to have good fundamentals.

It's funny that we look at the same video and see different things. I see a young man who is still growing into his body. He does run the floor well and seems to hold his position well on the blocks. He catches the ball well and seems to have a knack for blocking shots. However, I see a very mechanical low post game. He isn't fluid right now. He reminds me of Hill and Bolomboy when they were freshmen. He is going to need a lot of polish and to work on his leaping ability. At the DI level, he will have to jump. He will be going up against guys nearly his size who can jump. He looks athletic enough to get it done and being just 18 he may still be growing. Big men often develop a little slower than others. He looks to be worth waiting for. :coffee:

What is it we see differently? You think he does look clumsy or hesitant, or doesn't look good fundamentally? I didn't say he won't need work or that he's not young or ready for D1 ball. I didn't say he'll amount to anything worth getting excited about, simply that he looks like a solid "project" player.

I did see hesitation in his low post game. You are right that he does have good fundamentals. He is close to getting to where he needs to be. My feelings are that getting in the weight room and working on quicker moves around the basket could make him into an impact player. He is close, but it might take a year or two to get him to that level. I did notice that he shoots the little jump hook with both hands. :coffee:

It would have been nice to see something going at the rim, finishing through contact, and a dunk now and then. Not much on that video but I trust Rahe, he once told me he wouldn't take a 7' kid just because of his height...

Here is some video of Michal Kozak.

Olds nice post! Love the video. :thumb:

I found another one because of the one you posted. This second one got me really pumped on this signee. He is playing for the Czech National Team at a FIBA Competition against highly rated bigs either at or going to major schools in the U.S. or currently in the pros or headed to the pros. This guy is going to contribute immediately.

I'm running out of fingers and toes on the scholarship count. Some bodies are going to not be with us next year. Totally surprised at this one. Love to know a little more...

Well...this is interesting. I knew he was being considered, but didn't think an announcement was going to come so soon. Well...lets look at who has committed and who is currently on scholarship.

17-18
SR: Baker and Richardson (Gittens?)
JR: Chapman, Braxton, John, Cannon
SO: Harding, Dallas
FR: Kiko, Darling, Court, Doc, Kozak, Vialen, and Ary-Turner

Current Walkons: Brenden Morris and McKay Butler

So we only have 13 scholies and currently there are 16 guys signed for 17 - 18. Someone is going to have to go. My guess...and this is purely my theory.

1. Gittens isn't going to get a scholarship if he ends up getting his year back. I don't know what his role will be, if any, if he comes back. If he gets his year, he will have an extra year and could, potentially, leave the program and play for another institution. I'm not sure how the NCAA looks at that. I'm not sure that is even possible. Because a freshman has been signed, you need 4 years. That means that another freshman will have to be cut.

2. I believe that Darling will be heading to a JC. I'm not ripping on the kid. He is a good guy and has given his all. He just isn't quite there yet. Can he come back? Yes...definitely, but I think two years at a JC will help him really grow into his potential.

3. Kiko or Cannon will be the third guy. Since Coach signed another freshman, I think it will be Kiko; you need 4 years for a commit that is going to use four years. Not two years. I totally feel for him and wish him the absolute best, but his injuries have really hurt him. It is so tough coming back from an ACL injury and playing at a high level. The vast majority of athletes who have injured their ACL usually re-injure their knee within two years. There are two well known local QBs who both went through many knee surgeries and were never the same after. With Chapman joining the program and the two new bigs, along with Fuller due to come home in 2018, I'm pretty sure that Kiko will be "counselled" out.

That to me will probably the most likely scenario.

I wonder if the guys that wont be on the team next year already know they wont be back. If I had to guess I agree with Tal. Darling for sure. I only saw him play once in the Purple and White game and he did not look like a D1 player. Kiko just can't get healthy. Who know really what is going on with Gittens? Would not mind having him back next year, but my hunch is he is done after this year. My early. So next years roster would be

SR Richardson, Baker
JR Chapman, Cannon, John, Braxton
SO Harding, Dallas
FR Nelson, Turner, Court, Kozak, Vialen
= 13

This is another very good pick up for our program.

Trevon is a high character man with a tremendous game. Wildcat Nation is going to love this young man.

Can't wait to see him in person this June.

Weber got an absolute gem with Trevon's verbal. He is a steal and is going to be something special. I was wary at first, but the more I learn about him, the more I can't believe he is coming to Weber. Not only is he talented, but he is really smart.

I hope this doesn't come back to bite me, but I think this might be Rahe's best class at Weber. You've got five guys who could all be playing at schools in much higher conferences. If there is one thing Coach is great at, it is recruiting.

Has anyone seen Brekkot Chapman this year? How is he looking? Is he good enough to be an improvement over Hill at power forward? Is there any chance that he could be playing the wing for us next year?

Funny to look back at this topic. Lots of comments that these guys were steals and that this was another excellent recruiting class. 18 months later and 3 of the 5 are already gone after contributing very little or nothing at all.

 agreed!! Personally, I think I drank the purple cool-aid a little too much. I always had my issues with Trevon. I just didn't feel he was a team first type of guy. He is very talented and can really play basketball. Offensively we could have used him a lot this year. However, he wasn't a great defender, or wouldn't play defense fully. In his case, I don't feel it is a lack of ability, but ambition on his part. Heaven's the kid started at one point, and won the 3pt contest. Sometimes a player type just doesn't mix well with the coaches strategy.

Vialen got sick and needs to recover. Home is the best place to do that. The kid can play basketball. Nevertheless, he was brought in as a project and Randy was convinced that he would need two years to really start producing. However, Vialen will get a Euro contract someday and make good money playing basketball.

Lastly, Court...he's the one I feel had the most potential coming out of high school. However, he lost his legs on his mission and hasn't gotten them back. Whenever I watched him playing, I felt that he was running in cement. You could tell he wanted to do something but his body just wasn't allowing him to do it. To me though, I think it was a major disservice to him that Randy even played him this year. No matter what he should have been red shirted. He hasn't even been home a year now, and Randy was expecting him to be all world again after a month. With a red shirt and a full year home, I think he could have contributed more next Fall. With RMs patience can pay off, and I feel with Court more patience needed to be given. I really hope he has a great career at Dixie. The kid has earned it.

Quick thought, I think, as fans, it is more fun and better for the team and program to be positive. Go visit the USU board and watch them Tee off on recruits. It is pretty ridiculous. I like to give the kids an edge and go with a positive angle rather than ripping them apart and tearing them down before they have even hit the floor for the Cats. Getting a scholarship at a DI school proves they are good basketball players (less than 1% of high school basketball players play DI) just the college game is far more competitive and quick. If nothing else, we should applaud them and their achievements and hope that they end up being contributors and if the planets align, stars for the Cats. Better to believe and be positive than to act like a Cougar or Aggie.

Amen, well-said. The fact that a kid is recruited to play Division 1 basketball is a big deal, and means they were a really good high school player. High level basketball is really hard, and we never know who will blossom. It will be fun to watch which ones in this group will be good, which will be great, and hopefully, we'll even see a star emerge from this group.
