Clackamas ends West Linn's reign as four-time boys 6A champ, beats Lions 78-71 in semifinals

Elijah Gonzales could be the next Jeremiah Dominguez for the Vikings. He should be fun to watch in the upcoming years!

"West Linn (23-5) lost in the postseason for the first time in 24 games. The Lions, seeking a record-setting fifth consecutive state title, couldn’t contain Gonzales, the Portland State-bound  senior guard who effortlessly buzzed through West Linn’s press and went 16 of 18 from the free throw line."

Holland Woods, another PSU signee, had a great senior season:

"In the previous triple-overtime win by Apollo, gifted senior point guard Holland "Boo Boo" Woods (Portland State signee :thumb: ) had a game-high 41 points.  On Monday evening in this year's 5A final, in a very much similar result, Woods would again finish with a game-high 33 points in his team's double overtime loss - including a near game-winning shot after the buzzer sounded.  Woods gave his all in this contest, as he has all season long, but would come up just short in winning it all.  Woods will become a star guard for Portland State  in the very near future, as most college coaches past on this amazing talent."

Looks like the Vikings may have just added their new starting point guard to the roster:

On what I think is a negative side since the coaching change, I don't see PG Elijah Gonzales from Clackamas HS on the roster anymore. I thought he could be the next Jeremiah Dominguez for the Vikings.

I guess PSU let him out of his letter of intent. Some research shows he's made a couple visits to UP but he still hasn't signed anywhere yet. He may come back to PSU.

Dang. I checked about a week or so ago and he was still on the roster. Not a big surprise with the coaching change. Hopefully there's no bad feelings and perhaps we can re-sign him.

Devyn Wilson Is New Basketball Coach Barret Peery's First Signee

http://www.goviks.com/news/2017/4/27/mens-basketball-devyn-wilson-is-new-basketball-coach-barret-peerys-first-signee.aspx

New Portland State Men's Basketball Coach Barret Peery has signed his first recruit since taking over the program less than three weeks ago, Devyn Wilson of Panola (TX) College.
Wilson is a 6-3, 185-pound guard originally from Brooklyn, NY where he attended South Shore High School. He then played one year at a prep school, Florida Christian Institute, before attending Panola.
"We are very excited to get Devyn into our basketball family. He is a good fit for us on and off the court," said Peery. "Devyn has a tremendous skill level and energy for the game. He will fit right into our system.
"Devyn comes from a very good junior college program coached by Grant McMillan which makes him ready for Division I basketball."
While at South Shore HS in Brooklyn, Wilson averaged 14.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and was nominated for the McDonald's All-American game. At Florida Christian in Sebring, FL, he averaged just under 20 points per game.
This past year he led Panola in scoring, averaging 13.0 points per game, and shot .414 from three-point range. Wilson also averaged 3.6 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. Panola College reached the national junior college tournament and ended the year ranked 15th.
As a freshman at Panola, Wilson averaged 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals, shooting .414 from three-point range as well. Panola College placed second in the Region 14 tournament.
Panola was 50-18 overall in Wilson's two seasons.
Wilson joins a Viking team that was 15-16 last year. Portland State has nine players returning that are letterwinners.
Peery was hired as the new coach at Portland State on April 10 and introduced to the Portland State community on April 13.

Local Product Deante Strickland Signs With Viking Basketball Program

http://www.goviks.com/news/2017/5/1/mens-basketball-local-product-deante-strickland-signs-with-viking-basketball-program.aspx

Portland State Basketball has added a local product to its program with the signing of Deante Strickland to a National Letter of Intent. New Head Coach Barret Peery announced the signing, his second since taking over the Viking basketball program three weeks ago.
Strickland is a 5-10, 185-pound point guard from Casper College in Wyoming. A native of Vancouver, WA, he attended Central Catholic High School in Portland where he earned All-State honors.
"Deante is a really high-level, high-pace, high-speed point guard who can make us play fast," said Peery. "He has an extremely competitive nature that will fit with what we want to do at both ends of the floor. Coming from Casper College, Deante has been taught by Coach Dan Russell who has a fantastic track record and understands what to do to get kids prepared for the next level.
"We are also very excited about the chance to bring Deante home to Portland where he can play in front of friends and family. . The fit is really good for all of us."
Strickland was the Region IX North Conference Player of the Year and honorable mention All-American this past season. He averaged 15.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game for Casper College. Strickland made 74 three-point field goals in 32 games, shot .771 at the free throw line and added 2.0 steals per game. Casper College was 24-9 overall.
As a freshman, Strickland averaged 9.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game. He earned third team All-Region for the 25-9 Thunderbirds.
Strickland is the second signing by Peery. Last week, Devyn Wilson signed with the Viking program. Peery was hired as the new coach at Portland State on April 10 and introduced to the Portland State community on April 13.

Portland State was 15-16 this past season. Nine players return that are letterwinners.
