Yuck, are you serious? Ending with the 4 that represented the conference this year in the playoffs, and throwing in both Montana schools and NAU? Anyone know how good that money game with the Beavs is? I would love to see us get San Diego in a non-conference game because with this schedule, we are going to need all the counters we can get for a shot at the playoffs.

I'm sure that we'll see a FBS and a lower-than-FCS program added to the schedule, with a bye in there somewhere on the TBA dates. I really don't want to see a non-conference game versus a BSC program as the non-FBS scheduled game. Scheduling ain't easy for us.

Regarding the BSC games, it's tough based on results from the 2016 season, but not bad. UM, NAU, and UND have been tough places for us to play, so it's nice to have them at home.

I hear what your saying. I've heard rumors about us playing Nevada or UNLV for awhile now. I'd rather get San Diego on the schedule than a DII team, as it would give us an all-DI schedule, and we'd play a school that is non-scholly from the Pioneer League, yet others in Portland are familiar with due to the fact that they play basketball in the same conference as the Pilots. Although that may not be an easy win as I see they beat Cal Poly in the playoffs today.

Another thing looking at that schedule is that we'd probably bus to all the conference road games. We've bussed before to both San Luis Obispo and Pocatello, and Bozeman is actually closer than either one. The Montana game being played in September, the weather should still be nice meaning the Griz will be bringing a bunch of people over, so that should act as another money game for us. It would be nice to jump on the bandwagon of other teams in the conference and set up a home and home with the Mo Valley. I understand that the Montana schools and North Dakota have the resources to play them, but when EWU, Poly and Weber start scheduling them, maybe it is time we look at it, too (if possible, of course). Some of the UNI people told me after the playoff game how impressed they were with the city and would love to have the opportunity to come back.

Just some thoughts... :twocents: :D

FYI... Pocatello is 695 miles away; Bozeman is over 800 miles away.

I've heard a rumor that BYU is in the mix for the second money game.

I've clocked Bozeman at 736 miles before. Travelmath has it at 758 miles. But you are right, Pocatello is closer. But really, if you stop off for a sandwich in either Spokane or Boise, it is about the same time-wise. SL Obispo is about 850 I believe (have never gone straight down there yet).

Yeah, BYU was another team I've heard as well. I also have heard Fresno.

Pocatello... a handy spot to follow Portland State if you're living in Boise. However, going the extra hour to Bozeman is far more worth it from a tourist standpoint... and I've only been through Bozeman twice. That October 7 date is kind of calling to me... except so is November 4 in SLO.

I wouldn't whine about the conference schedule. The BSC has been in a down cycle... I expect at least one of EWU or UND to lose this weekend. If Portland State can put together a real team, everything else will take care of itself until the eventual playoff demise, much like last year.

Why do we have Cal Poly on the schedule every year? I haven't looked at their schedule, but if Cal Poly has a bye the game before they play the Viks I believe that would be the third year in a row (at least) that the schedule "worked" out that way. If we are going to have them on the schedule every year, the least they could do would be to schedule our bye the week before to give the players equal time.

The thing is though, playing two money games and then playing a DII (or lower), does not leave much room for error to make the playoffs. Unless lightning strikes (again), our playoff resume is most likely going to be 6-2 in the Big Sky, 7-4 overall, which puts us at the liberty of the committee, and up against those teams from the east that were able to play a full DI schedule (8-0 or 7-1 most likely would put us up for a share of the conference title at least). Last year, had we done what we should have done and lost to Wazzu, all of a sudden our resume is not as strong as, say, North Dakota, and we would not have hosted a playoff game (maybe not even make the playoffs). If we could replace the DII with a DI counter (San Diego, Stephen F Austin, Missouri State, heck even a non conference Big Sky team) and still go 7-4, that would look a whole lot better than a DII. Also, perish the thought but if we were to somehow lose to the DII, we can forget about the playoffs, period. I know it costs money to travel, but having a home and home with a non conference FCS team betters our chances of making the playoffs, even with two money games.

I actually like this schedule. It doesn't feel like we have to win 7 conference games now to get playoff consideration. :thumb:

This is a wonderful podcast. Wonderful interview. Wonderful coach. Dwight Jaynes is so wonderfully spot-on about Portland State.

th
th

Jaynes as Brando..............................Bruce Barnum with Chris Petersen

These two men represent a superb influence for Portland State.

I like this as well. I'm not a fan of playing Big Sky schools as non-conference, but it's tough out on the west coast to find FCS schools for non-conference. However, I'll take it over the Western Oregon and Central Washingtons of the world. No disrespect to them, but I don't feel that they fit into our goal of preparing for conference play.

Having five programs coming off of bye weeks prior to playing us last season was tough, so it looks like the cards are in our favor with two of the three weeks prior to to starting conference play at home are bye weeks.

That was a good interview with Barney. I wonder who the four players are that he wants to "punch in the neck" are.

I heard a rumor there may be a conflict for the UC-Davis game. It may be played in Hillsboro. Either way, I love home games in September. We have some of the nicest weather in the early fall as compared to the rest of the country. I certainly like them better than the home games in late November.

Aside from that, I also like the UC-Davis game as it should be a good draw. The casual Portland college football fan will remember Hawkins from both Boise and Colorado, and it being his first Big Sky game here should generate a positive buzz. Also, it does form a better argument with those back east who seem to think a win over Campbell and Savannah State is better than a win over CWU and WOU just because Campbell and Savannah are FCS programs. If we truly have aspirations for the playoffs, a full DI schedule is pretty much a must. Also having Montana at home is a great plus.

Heard y'all will be playing BYU.

Aint religious but...Gawd help yall!!!! Their fanbase will invade PSFF and drive ya nuts!!!!!

Signed, a big time WYOMING fan who absolutely HATES BYU!!!!!

Technically UC Davis won't be a Big Sky game since it's non-conference, but it'll be two Big Sky schools playing each other. ;-) Oh how I can't stand that we're at times forced to play Big Sky programs as non-conference games. It will be nice to have old Dan Hawkins in town.

BTW, if the UC Davis goes to Hillsboro, it won't be because of the Timbers.

Not sure about the Thorns yet.

I wonder about the NAU game, though.
