2017 UC Davis @ Portland State

Nope, nope, nope. I'm a casual fan, but I try to watch a few games every season. After today's game, that's the end of the PSU season for me, though. I don't mind the L, but I don't want to spend my Saturdays watching something that looks like bad HS football. Just embarrassing and frustrating.

Thanks for watching. You may now return to the Beavs.

I'm certainly glad Susan and I didn't buy a pair of season tickets. I understand PortlandStater: "Just embarrassing and frustrating."

A little bit of the Beavs in us. Thought we had it won before we even set foot on the field. When we realized that it was a game, it was too late.

No doubt this bye week will be different than last bye week.

Anyone else that wants to throw out the season after one bad game, go ahead. Everyone is still 0-0 and a lot of teams still have a lot of work to do. Comparing this game with the previous two, I have to agree with Barnum. That was a totally different team out there than what I saw before. Two weeks before the conference opener against Montana. We have to be ready for that game.

What the frig happened here? Their coach, Dan Hawkins, is the former coach (once upon a time) at Boise State who originally did not do so well after being promoted up to Colorado. I guess he's found himself again at the quality UC school and has his team on track.

When will get ourselves promoted up and out of FCS? Coastal Carolina did it. And look what Idaho State did to Nevada, upsetting them 30-28. We need to study out what weaknesses Sac State and we share and work to overcome them. Weber beat Sac State again as if they own them. How do teams get themselves (rather not get themselves) predictably beaten like that year after year? There is something systemic in the works that needs identification. It could simply be that cities such as Portland and Sacramento have so much going on in them that the college games become diluted in significance, especially if not attended well, whereas games taking place in Weber and Cedar City in Utah are the big events in town. There must be a way for the big cities to turn this on its head, to make being in the big city advantageous over the small college towns.

Oh yes it was Mr. Barnum; all yours.

"This was an all-systems failure."

That about sums up what went on yesterday. I didn't see our last TD, because I just couldn't watch what was going on out there any longer and left.

We looked pretty unprepared out there from the UC Davis first drive. It's like we'd never seen an up tempo offense, and that first Davis drive was most certainly up tempo. Also, that qb pooch punt seemed to be like a magic trick to our defense. Not once, but twice.

I could go on about overthrowing receivers, receivers dropping balls that are right on their hands, blocked punts, and Dade going all WWE on that Davis player, but why bother.

This better be like a bad hole in golf where you're done with it the moment you step into the next tee box. I guess we'll find out in two weeks...

We still are what we were at the start of the season, a young team with a young QB, who will go as far as the defense will take us. Its easy to get up for the FBS games when you can play loose and carefree because no one is expecting anything from you. Its another when you're back at your level and people are now expecting you to win, and do the right things, and dominate. All teams need an attention-getter and this was ours. Fortunately, it does not hurt us too much as it was a non-conference game. We have two weeks to get ready to put the conference on its ear, and based on the results from the first few weeks, the conference is begging for someone to step up. But we have to be ready for Montana, no question about it.

Since we have another bye coming up I think we should re-open the quarterback competition this week and name the starter Sunday or Monday of next week. From what I have seen Eason doesn't throw a good deep ball, even that first long completion to Kraght in the in the OSU game was badly under thrown, but he was just so wide open he was able to come back and make the catch. Kraght seems to have the better arm, he overthrew Adams a couple of times on the one series he got, but I would have given him a couple more series at least to settle in given the circumstances.

If Eason wins the job again great (and after this point I think we should pick a guy and stick with him), but the problem yesterday with the offense was that we couldn't do anything with the pass (I think we averaged ~6 yards a carry rushing) and if Kraght gives us a better chance in that phase we've got to go with him.

I have debated whether to respond after following the string. After watching probably the most disappointing game I've watched over the last several years should I wax positive, it's OK go team, or be honest, in hope that someone with influence can share the sentiment and something changes?

Our play calling needs to change; we can run the ball behind a very good line so run the all. Special teams has now cost us two games; it should be the primary focus. Kraght is a better leader, is better respected and moves the team down the field better. Let the young kid learn from him and be put in games as he matures. When we pass keep it to short slants and use our tight ends...10 yards max. And coaches...look in the mirror. You have a good team. Stop complaining about youth and get them fired up and ready to compete. There was no passion to compete from what I heard of practices this week. You had a bye week and still your team was not ready.

I don't want to give up on the season but if the coaches aren't willing to make some significant changes this week we will be lucky to win 3-4 games this year. Change starts from leadership...time to lead.

It wasn't just the offense that struggled. Defense Coordinator made big changes in this game. 3rd String MLB played the majority of the game, the starter Jackett was hardly in and the two-deep never hit the field. The DT Del Toro barely played the first half and they played Braxton Winterton more than usual. I don't understand why they changed what worked in the first two games.

Because they are not as smart as they think they are. There is a history here.

Wow, that is bizarre. The release from PSU says that Jackett started and Hanley (2nd string MLB that the coaches seem to be high on) played, but maybe they both got injured during the course of the game. According to the depth chart the third string MLB is Nate Salu (and he had 9 tackles), but he's a redshirt junior that had played in one career game prior to Saturday so I can't imagine they would go to him that extensively unless they had to.

I noticed that Winterton played a lot as well (after not getting in the game last week), and the release says Foreman started, but maybe he got injured as well.

I was surprised to see Carlos Martin getting so many carries at RB, but I did read in one of the recaps that Summers injured his back during the game. I would have rather seen Talley and Antwone Williams pick up those carries though.

The del Toro situation is weird as well. He's listed as the starter for that game, but did he get shaken up in the first half or are the coaches trying to prove some kind of point to him? Semise Kofe, who is pretty heralded, played in his first game, but not sure how many snaps he got. Sione Taumoe'anga still hasn't played after getting a lot of snaps last year as a true freshman so I assume he's injured, also Stauffer was still out at Center.
