2019 Position Preview

Hornetsports ran a nice series on the roster outlook for each position. Worth the read and well done IMO.

Quarterbacks
Thomson is the obvious starter. Sounds like Dunniway is tabbed as backup with Meyer and Ale battling for 3rd.

Running Backs
I get the impression that plenty of players will see action with Dotson and Perkinson leading the way.

Wide Receivers
With Rucker out, only a limited amount of experience returns aside from Williams. A lot of new faces thrown into the mix. Should be interesting to see who steps up and claims a prominent role in the offense.

Offensive Line & Tight Ends
The offensive line returns 4 players that have started, 3 of whom (Ming, Parker, Bianco) have at least 15 career starts. Lots of size and depth at this position.

Tight end has a lot of returners as well but Anderson is the only player with a career reception.

Defensive Line
A lot of experience returns at defensive line. Obinna is back at defensive end coming off a medical redshirt season, Chambers and Choates will anchor the interior, and the other starting end position is up for grabs.

Linebackers
No returning starters and Garcia is the only returner with noticeable stats. Only 2 upperclassmen on the roster.

Defensive Backs
A lot of experience returning, but not a lot of results to come with it.
FS: Barnes, SS: Perryman, CB: Bland, CB: Lomax?, NB: Bruce

Specialists
Kicker and long snapper returns, and a new punter thrown into the mix.
K: Medeiros, LS: Lauvai, P: Clark

And this Monday a new transfer kicker gets to start practicing with the team! FINALLY!

Great, welcome! Can't wait to watch the start of the Troy Taylor era and to enjoy some HORNET FOOTBALL!

QB: I hope this year with Thomson works out. I'd be more comfortable with SIX QBs, though (probably because I was the 6th string QB at UOP before I transferred to Sac, LOL). You never know if we'll play a cheap-shot program like St. Mary's used to be. (I hope it's not Fresneck....)

OL/Y: I'm VERY happy to hear about the experience there. That bodes well for a successful season, as we need Thomson on his feet the entire season.

P: That said, I'd like to see Thomson punt, as that would immediately force the defense to respect the fake. The average punting specialist can't run OR pass his way out of a wet paper bag. Exhibit "A": Danny White and the incredible 48-yard scamper from punt formation he put on Green Bay back in 1980.

That said, all your review (was that directly from the Hornetsports review, or your analysis of it, SD?) did for me, SD, was reinforce my quite optimistic forecast of a 7-4 or 8-3 season with (hopefully a playoff berth attached to it. Thank you!

Thank you! Can't wait to make the trek down for the season opener in a few short days! #StingersUp

Incidental question:

If the SOU game turns out to be the blowout I expect, can we expect to see Taylor go three- or four-deep at the QB position? That could be crucial if Thomson reverts to form later this season and goes down. (I HOPE not, because another medical waiver is probably out of the question....)

That's great news. My Lodi Flames opened the season with a 51-0 win over Ceres Friday night, and only played TWO QBs. I was NOT happy with that idea....
