2019 Recruiting Class

I'm thinking Randy will be signing 2 this Fall, possibly 3. I wouldn't be surprised if, next year at this time, there are four newbs on the roster though.

So what I interpret you saying is that at least one, possibly two, of our current roster will transfer after next season? The reality is that 13 guys are on scholarship, and only 8 or 9 will get meaningful minutes, so that leaves 4 or 5 guys who are not happy about playing time each season, so it is a high possibility that 1-2 guys transfer each year.

I have watched McKay Cannon very closely since his transfer to BYU last year. While he is not a star at BYU, he is definitely a better player than the Weber coaches led him to believe after he lost his starting position and most of his playing time. Reality for coaches in one program doesn't determine a kid's eventual success or failure in another program. That's how I can feel okay about kids transferring away from Weber--they may find a better fit for their skill level, talents, interests, etc. somewhere else. I hope that's the case with Riley Court, Trayvon Ary-Turner, and all the other guys who have transferred away in the past year or two and are still playing.

Dee, I would disagree on McKay. I think the Weber coaches evaluation was exactly what the Y got. A bench player that moved the ball well, couldn't score consistently, wasn't quick enough on defense and was a so-so 3 point shooter (and unfortunately whined when he got a little of the spotlight shined on him in the early season). He got off to a good start, exciting a Y fan base by passing well and hitting a few well-timed 3's, which is not what they'd been watching with Emery the year before. Those shots he hit in the preseason pretty much disappeared in league. He couldn't keep up with the quicker WCC guards on defense, unless the Y zoned (which Rahe doesn't do), and he couldn't shake them on offense. Go look at his game stats, they bear this out:

McKay was a decent bench player and would have been the same for us. But we needed a kid who continued to grow and get better. I will agree that he was at the school he wanted to be at (so good for him), and I think that brought a little more to his game. But his game is petty pedestrian, and we needed more out of him.

I agree with what has been said regarding Cannon--he is doing well on a BYU team that allows him to play to his strengths. The best way to say it is that there are "levels" and there are "styles." Some guys sign with a team that is above their level--the actual ceiling of how high they can play, and it doesn't work out for them. For other guys, the style of the coach/program/university doesn't fit their strengths or interests. Sometimes it is both. I'm still excited about this year's team, we'll be better than expected if our health holds up. I think there is more depth at all positions, even if some of the guys are young coming in.

Coach Rahe seemed super high on this year's team in the press conference for the Beehive Classic kickoff. One of the most interesting things he said is that 5 of the 6 freshmen will get a lot of playing time. Of course, that all depends on injuries, etc., but a statement like that really builds confidence in the fan base for the season.

That is hilarious Olds! I understand that people get frustrated from time to time with coaches, but let's be honest--Rahe has done a great job of staying at or near the top of the BSC for a long time. As he said, he is starting to get better athletes coming to Weber. Building a strong program takes time, and with the success of Lillard, Bolomboy, Senglin, etc., kids can see that there is a pipeline that prepares kids for the professional level. If you look at it from that perspective, Weber is #1 or #2 in the state of Utah (U of U) for preparing guys to play professionally.

Sorry, :blah: is all I hear when Rahe speaks

I've heard that Costco has a good audiology service. As long as it isn't a cognitive thing, they might be able to help.

My reaction is due to the years of coach speak, speaking but not really saying anything meaningful, and using the same excuses and rhetoric year after year. But he actually seems to be more candid here. I hope he keeps that up.

I certainly do understand your frustration WeberCat, and it has nothing to do with hearing problems! The mid-majors have to take players the P5 doesn't take, and sometimes it works out, often it doesn't. I just think it's nice to hear some optimism coming from the coaches. The problem with having so many good players is figuring out how to keep all the players happy.

Like Dee said, it is nice hearing Rahe say something different. Sometimes coach tends to sound like a broken record. In this instance he is actually talking about his team and its chances of success. That shows us something. Last year, he was extremely vanilla about his expectations. We did get an overabundance of coach speak in 17-18, and now we all know why. That team really overachieved. Getting to 20 wins was amazing, and really quite the accomplishment. However, now, we are already hearing something different. Personally, I like hearing that our team has serious talent and has a lot of potential. He is shooting straight about the kids we are recruiting. Randy has taken it up a notch. Now, he just needs better assistance in developing and forming our team.

Good get for the Cats. Welcome to Weber State! Technically this means that there is room for 1 more player to join the program. I still think Randy signs three this fall.

Bummer deal about Josh Early committing to Northern Kentucky. Randy was on a tear lately with recruits. He was getting all of his top recruits. Oh well, I hope Early has a good career and I wish him luck. Next guy up! Pride visited last weekend and another recruit is scheduled to visit this week. So far, Randy has been able to get a commitment from a guard in KJ Cunningham. I think we are looking for a wing and another big.

Good article on two of our recruits and the prep school they played for.
