Been a good game so far. NDSU looks a little stronger all around.
It's interesting how both both 1st year coaches inherited well-built programs and haven't missed a beat. JMU hires an Alabama assistant and NDSU hires Elon's HC. Both teams have very good defenses but both teams have very good offenses too. Both can throw the ball well even though I'd argue both prefer to run the ball. The thing is both have great play call keeping the defenses honest with a continuous variety of looks.
I think Weber's last two losses to JMU have had a lot to do with JMU's Riley Stapelton. He really changes what the defense has to do. Reminds me of the weapon Andrew Vollert was for Weber and how it opens the offense in different ways. The fact that Weber doesn't really have that kind of threat anymore compounds the problem Stapelton poses for Weber's defense.
I see a similar thing in NDSU with their FR QB Trey Lance. He's like a more athletic version of Cantwell, posing a threat with his arm and legs. Both NDSU and JMU are very capable passing teams even though both run well and Lance is more of a run threat than JMU's DiNucci.
I think Hill has built Weber in a similar way that these teams' new head coaches have benefited from and hope if and when Hill ever leaves the next WSU coach will be able to keep things rolling. I'm also hopeful with how Hill has built this team and with Weber knocking on the championship game door it opens recruiting opportunities to make the necessary improvents present themselves. I really believe Weber needs some combination of the following upgrades: OC - QB - TE/pass game.
