2020 RECRUITING CLASS

Teiano Hardee - (SF) Early signing period
Height: 6-5
Fairfield, CA
Vanden High School

I think he's my favorite recruit in this class. An absolute baller. Hardee had an offer from Northern Colorado but didn't really consider it with Katz and staff recruiting him hard. Fits the Strings mold that Katz like. Has the potential to be our leading scorer by his Junior-Senior year. Could be a Hornets all-time type of player if he works on his 3-ball as his mid-range and dribble and drive game is already at the D1 mid-major level. Really surprised (probably because Vanden HS plays in a lower division) that he didn't get more looks from other Mid-major schools. Guys like Vanden usually leave HS with at least a couple of WCC/Big West/Big Sky options.

David Jones - (PF) Early signing period
Height: 6-7
Sacramento, CA
Grant High School / Woodstock Academy

A solid frontcourt player pickup for the Hornets. It's always difficult to recruit high-level frontcourt players at this level. The fact that Jones is from Sacramento and has a year of prep school to work on his skillset and body is a plus. Watching his highlights, Jones has a pretty fluid body, he's very active running the floor and around the rim. I'd project him to probably be the starting "Center" by his Sophomore year.

Jalen Townsell - (SF) Committed March 27, 2020
Height: 6-7
Sparks, NV
Spanish Springs High School / Nevada (Walk On) / Arizona Western College

A very intriguing player with 3 years of eligibility remaining. Watching his tapes, it looks like he's a player who loves to spot up and shoot the long ball and likes to finish strong at the rim in transition. Very unorthodox release, (to be franked, not the prettiest), but it goes in at a high rate, so that's all that matters. Walked on at Nevada after high school (had an offer from Davis) during their deep NCAA tournament run year under Eric Musselman's before the coach left for Arkansas. He had D1 offers from Texas-Southern and St.Francis (PA) through basketball connections after he decided to transfer out of Nevada, but decided to go the JUCO route instead. I think Townsell ceiling is a back-up wing (7th-9th man), but Katz tends to give those guys more opportunities than other coaches, so he could end up slotting in and starting for all we know. Not expecting him to be a key contributor unless he works on his body, but would love to be surprised

Adding transfer Deshaun Highler guard from East Los Angeles College, I believe has two more years of eligibility.

As Sac_hornets mentioned, Ryan Blackmon (FR - Walk On) has officially trasnfered out of the program and Katz and co. picked up a commitement from JUCO transfer DeShaun Highler. Blackmon wasn't a key contributor and isn't expected to be the rest of his career so not a big loss. Seemed like a good kid so I hope him the best wherever he lands.

Now DeShaun Highler and Samaad Hector.

Deshaun Highler - (G) Committed March 28, 2020
Height: 6-3
Riverside, CA
John W. North High School / UTEP (Walk On - RS) / East Los Angeles College

Will join the Hornets as a Junior. DeShaun Highler was a former walk-on at UTEP and transfered to ELAC after a year as a red-shirt Freshman for the Miners. He'll be part of "Last Chance U" basketball episodes later aired on Netflix (can't confirm). I had the chance to briefly read up on his person history and seems like this kid has been through a lot for such a young person. Can't tell if he'll be able to turn that to a postive for the program. Katz usually recruits really good kids so fingers crossed there's no problem here. As far as his contribution on the court, I like his fit under Katz system as he moves fairly well off the ball from the few highlight videos that I've been able to find. Good size at 6'3 and good ability to cut. I don't know if he'll be able to knock down the long ball consistent enough to space the floor so we'll see if he can work on that before next season starts. I expect him to be the first guard off the bench for Katz for the next two year.

Samaad Hector - (F) Committed April 4, 2020
Height: 6-6
Vancouver, WA
Skyview High School / Lower Columbia College

What should be Katz and co. last recruit for 2020, Samadd Hector is quite the intrigue. At 6'6 (more like 6'4-5 from the vids I've seen of him) to be a front court player is going to be extremely difficult for him. He rebounds at an insanely high rate at the JUCO level 14.8 rebounds per game his sophomore year. Though I don't know how difficult that league is compared to other "high level" JUCO around the country. SAC was his only D1 offer (Portland State and Idaho showed interests) and he had a bunch of offers from D2 and NAIA schools. No idea what kind of contributor he'll be because even in the Big Sky, PFs/Cs are standing at 6'7-6'10. His ability to handle to ball doesn't seem to be too high as of yet, so if he could improve on that, then Katz could possibly slot him into the SF roll so because his ability to play defense seems to be pretty good already. Intriguing prospects so we'll see how this plays out...

Indeed, Katz and Co. replaced recent transfer Jamion Wright (Walked-On) with Noah Zoppi. Shouldn't be in the rotation but we'll see. The 2022 Senior class is gonna have half the roster on it with 7 graduating seniors that year. Katz seem to be using the plug and play JUCO approach for non rotational players so it won't be that big of a factor.

Katz and Co just added more PG depth with the addition of former San Jose State transfer Zach Chappell.

Pros:
- Played meaningful minutes as a sixth man against good competition in the Mountain West
- A 'homegrown" player from nearby Capital Christian

Cons:
- Played losing basketball on what's considered one of the worst D1 basketball team in 2018-2019
-No clear leader at the lead guard postion. Every coach needs a floor general to rely on, does Katz knows who it will be for the 2020-2021 team?

With the addition of Chappell, the 2022 Senior class has now inflated into a whopping 8 players. This leads to the question of how long that extension Katz received was. Is this loading of the 2022 class just a coincedential result of signing the "best players possible" or is Katz trying to tell us something? Not only that, the roster is now sitting at 18. Does this mean that Katz is expecting another transfer out? If I'm not mistaken, NCAA rules allow each D1 basketball team to carry just 15 players on the roster, or are there special execption for Walk-Ons? So many questions...

I count 5 scholly and 1 walk on in class of '22...

Highler
Hector
Davis
Cooke-Harper
Chappell (if he is eligible next season)

Zoppi (walk on)

Where am I wrong? Bridges and Greabell have moved on for different reasons...is that what you were counting?

Interesting! I haven't heard of either Bridges and Greabell trasnferring out. Would not be surprised by Greatbell, but Bridges was one of Katz's favorite players who got alot of minutes last season, so I am (would be) really surprised by that. Did you see a Twitter post somewhere regarding their status?

Right now,
2022 senior class
Highler
Davis
Bridges -----pending transfer?
Zoppi (walk-on)
Greabell (Former walk-on)----pending transfer?
Cooke-Harper
Hector
...Chappell

So 8 players pending the potential transfers with only one officially listed as a walk-on. If 8 stands, that's a huge class. At 6, it's still a pretty sizeable class. FYI, the only two transfer I've heard of this year so far are Wright and Blackmon. Both were walk-ons.

Bridges decided to concentrate on school......no Bball planned right now.....I don't know if Greabell is planning a transfer or something else.....D1 Bball is a big commitment....no twitter proof....trust me....

PGP, you called it.

Looks like James Bridges and Grant Greabell has left the team for personal reasons. I'm sad to see both go, as I've heard that they're both high character student-athletes. Bridges was a key contributer last season also as a small ball 4 player. whatever they both chose, wishing them the best in their endeavors. :thumb:
