This youtuber put up some well done informational videos with the most recent budget info for the '22-'23 fiscal year. Notable data points below.

RankUniversityFootball Budget ($M)Conference Rank
1San Diego State20.12
2UNLV17.73
3Fresno State16.65
4Nevada13.29
5San Jose State10.712
6Sacramento State7.32
7dungpile6.36
8Cal Poly6.17

Something to keep in mind when viewing the total athletic budget numbers in the video below is that is doesn't specify how many sports are sponsored by the respective institution. We have the highest athletics budget in the BSC by $5.7M but we also sponsor the most sports whereas most of the other BSC members sponsor the FCS minimums. Something to keep in mind when potential FBS movement is discussed.

Do these numbers include NLI money for football?

Curious as to how public schools have $20M, $30M football budgets. You can only have 83 scholarships and X amount of coaches. No G5 coaching staff is burning $10M. Recruiting takes a slice, but cant be $M's. Gameday expense is nominally higher (security, ushers, custodians, insurance, etc.) than FCS and equipment cost should be similar as most teams in FCS and G5 are sponsored by Nike, Adidas, Under Armor, etc.

Where is this money spent?
Promotions?
Travel?

Future versions of this would include NLI once the rules change and the departments can control it.

They still have to pay for the gear from the sponsor, it's just at a heavier discount depending on the school. There will be some level of "free" gear, but the majority is paid for.

Charter flights are expensive -- Football travel is expensive. You basically have in lots of cases a whole hotel buyout once you include support staff, athletic staff, players, coaches, etc. For a game you bring the band or cheerleaders to, it's even more.

Stadium upkeep is also a major cost. Generally speaking, tickets and concessions for football cover the bill for the staffing/security of all of your sports events. Some money is leftover for stadium upkeep, but the most falls on the overall budget. At a lot of these schools, these are Stadiums used 5/7 times per year. Maintenance is a lot. A lot of schools are on between a 3 and a 5 year refresh cycle for video boards. So you split that money up over multiple years as well.
