2023 Outlook

The 2023 season kickoff is just around the corner and surprisingly the Hornets are still facing a lot of doubters and haters even on the heels of a BSC three peat title run. The Hornets were picked 10th in the FCS in the Stats Perform preseason poll and picked to finish 3rd in the BSC in the coaches poll and 4th in the media poll. Our undefeated regular season and a playoff win apparently don’t mean much to the FCS world…which is fine by me as it has worked out well for the Hornets these past four years.

Following the departure of Head Coach Troy Taylor and subsequent promotion of Andy Thompson into the vacant role, the majority of the coaching staff was retained and the coaching staff was able to stave off a mass exodus of talent to the portal during the upheaval.

Offensively the Hornets return a lot of key components from the prolific offense of a season ago, but have some critical departures to backfill as well. All eyes will be on the QB battle between incoming transfer Carson Camp and Kaiden Bennett and the approach of Associate Head Coach Bobby Fresquez with personnel and play calling now that he holds the keys to the offense. The QBs will have a plethora of weapons to go to as TE Marshel Martin (FCS All- American, BSC 1st Team) returns along with WRs Jared Gipson, Parker Clayton, Devin Gandy, and Chris Miller who all got starts and significant playing time last season.

Up front, the anchor of the Hornet offense will be an OL that returns 4 starters from a season ago. The OL is led by Jackson Slater (FCS All-American, BSC 1st Team) and also returns Troy Stiefel, Nathan Mejia, and Ivan Garza. OL Kaden Richardson or Kenndel Riley will likely round out the starting front. In the backfield, RB Marcus Fulcher (BSC 1st Team) will step into the primary role and have a chance to showcase his playmaking abilities.

I’ve voiced my opinions on the Hornet offense in other threads, and upon further review there is no reason to change that opinion. Sound QB play that takes care of the ball and gets the ball into the hands of the playmakers on the roster should be more than enough to keep this offense performing at a high level.

The Hornet defense has plenty of room to improve from a season ago. While the Hornets did well in keeping points off the board, opposing offenses were able to move the ball well. LB Armon Bailey (FCS All-American, BSC 1st Team) will lead the Hornet defense with Brock Mather beside him. The secondary is led by returning starter CB Caleb Nelson (BSC 1st Team) with incoming transfer Jason Oliver vying for the CB spot on the other side. FS/SS’s Cameron Broussard, Eian Moore, and Gavin Davis-Smith all saw starting action last season. At NB, Jace O’Hara, Darien Pollard will be battling for the starting role. O’Hara has the most experience of the group.

On the DL, the Hornets return size and depth on the interior. At DT starters Jett Stanley and Tyler Hardeman return with plenty of depth behind them. At DE, both starter spots are open for grabs as Leke Fashola is the returner from last year's depth chart while DeShawn Lynch saw a lot of action as well.

Special teams returns P Cal McGough and LS AJ Campos and landed a highly touted recruit in K Nick Clegg. There are big shoes to fill at place kicker but bringing in the top kicking recruit from Arizona should quell concerns in the kicking game.

The 2023 Schedule is a soft one compared to recent years. The Hornets have favorable non-conference opponents that are D1 counters and a well placed week 6 bye. The roughest stretch is back to back road games at a rebuilding Stanford and a super hyped Idaho in weeks 3 and 4. We’ll know if there are any kinks in the armor early in the season.

Every game on the schedule is winnable and anything less than 8 wins and a playoff appearance is failure. There are only a few FCS games in which I wavered on picking a Hornet win (MSU & Montucky). But the fact of the matter is our 24-1 record against BSC opponents since ‘19 means that the BSC is ours until proven otherwise.

My prediction is 10-1 (8-0 BSC) en route to our 4th straight BSC title.

Week by week breakdown will be posted sometime before the first game.

Stingers Up!

Honest ignorance on this question, but, how much recruiting has coach Thompson been able to do for this squad? My sights are not abandoning this season, but I’d like to see who he brings in next season with a full year under his belt, and players of his choice.

I’m I’m glad we retained a good number of kids, and naively assume we wouldn’t be ranked so high if the ranking voters didn’t think we didn’t have a decent shot

Hoping that our Hornet Football Team Delivers a quality season. Coach T will have proven himself and his leaderships team to deliver championship level football at Sac State!
That success will be the foundation for solid recruiting in my opinion.
If the PAC re loads with SDSU, BSU, CSU, UNLV TV Markets we might be blessed w an invitation to MWC. THAT will if Pres. Wood approves will change our sports fan lives as Hornet Fans. Positive VIBES! 🙏🏻

Nick Clegg is gone from the team - so it appears he was either beaten out, or left for another opportunity.

Yikes! 😯

Crazy. He was on the roster when I did my outlook above. I guess we have to depend on a JC kicker to get the job done again. ;)

Takeaways from the offensive coaches from Jason's Stingers Up Podcast - defense is next week.

QB - Bobby likes the room - thinks its the most talented we've had. You can hear in his voice that he thinks Conklin was an absolute find - but they want/need to redshirt him badly. Sounds like Camp is a film room freak, and KB is a freak athlete, and that we may see both in games. But maybe not the two-QB system of previous years. He would give some details, and then backpedal. They are keeping this close to the vest.

RB - Pumphrey basically gave it out, with no surprises. Marcus is the best all-around back and most well rounded. Elijah Tau Tolliver is the change of pace and the best pass catcher out of the backfield (also mentioned protection, so he may be sliding into the old "3rd down back" sort of role) and the Ezra is the bruiser who will lower the shoulder and get yards straight ahead when they need them. Elijah Gable was the only other RB mentioned by name, but said he likes the younger talent. Also hinted we will continue to see the RB's spread out at WR, which is where I think Elijah might take after his brother a bit with this squad.

WR - This was more about Coach Prince than the wideouts themselves. Everyone is so high on him and expect him to be an OC sooner than later. We know going in we have a lot of bodies here (16) but he maybe mentioned 2-3 player names. I think who sees the field is going to be matchup and game plan oriented.

OL - Kris Talked a lot about being comfortable running the stuff with Bobby and it will be the same stuff they worked on with Troy. My nervousness is obviously if we try to just do all of Troy's stuff against Troy, that may not work out so well for us. I'm sure Kris and Bobby have some tricks up their sleeves. He also mentioned how he feels like he has 5 all-conference linemen, and mentioned a couple of the incoming freshman chose us over FBS offers they had, including Richard McKay (who seems to have unlimited potential) They have 20 in the room, and like normal, we will mix in 9-10 into the rotation at points.

TE - Jeremy likes his four main guys. Had some knocks and jokes about Charlie liking food, which might have been him ribbing him about coming to camp overweight (maybe). Martin is a stud, we all know that. The biggest positive I took away is he mentioned that Austin Jarrard is picking up assignments fast. Last year, there would be times he'd come onto the field in a 2TE set and have to ask the other TE what his assignment was. Also interesting that he feels like Coleman Kuntz would start on most teams in the FCS, and he is our #3 TE (#2 pass catching TE).

Special Teams - Zach Schreiner will handle place kicking (didn't go into great detail other than saying he's been handling pressure situations well in camp). He gave a big shout to Evan Kiely who he said has the biggest leg he's ever seen on KO (dude is 6'4"). AJ Campos has had a good camp and he's expecting big things at long snapper from him. We are keeping with the two punter system and he really likes both of them. He didn't mention which one will be holding, but I think we can all hope that if its Cal he's worked on learning how to throw a football (the pass he attempted last year will go down as one of the funniest things I've seen on a game film in history). Sounds like it'll mostly be Tau Tolliver returning things, but he talked about figuring out the four games to use Danny Scudero (freshman WR) because of how fast he is. Also mentioned Onterrio Smith, Jr. for the return game.

Hopefully he was beaten out and they have confident in the two other dudes - I don’t want to go back to 2PC every time we score lol…

It worked out OK last time, hopefully lightning strikes twice! 😉

Thanks for this recap, I'll have to give the podcast a listen. I too noticed an absolute embarrassment of riches in a lot of our positions when I was pulling together the outlook. The fact that most of these players stuck around when they could have bailed via the portal speaks volumes to the culture that has been built and instilled here under this (and the past) coaching staff. Hornet fans have never had it this good.

Here’s my week by week breakdown. Last season’s record is listed. I didn’t make an effort to look into who added what via the portal, so there could be some notable players added that aren’t accounted for. Enjoy.

Week 1 - Aug 31 - at Nicholls State - Win

Nicholls State (3-8, 3-3 Southland) is looking to improve on a subpar 2022 season and are picked 4th in the Southland Conference preseason poll. NSU has been a respectable program under Head Coach Tim Rebowe and has been a playoff team as recently as 2019.

On offense, the Colonels don’t return much. Their 3rd best producing WR, 2nd best producing RB and 3 starters on the OL return. On defense almost everyone is back, including their top 4 tacklers. NSU returns 2 DL, 4 LBs, and 3 DBs. On special teams, NSU returns their K and P.
Notable returners:
  • WR Neno Lemay: 21 rec, 291 yds, 1 TD
RB Collin Guggenheim: 105 car, 543 yds, 4 TD, 12 rec, 93 yds
LB Kylin White: 79 tak 3 TFL
    S Tyler Morton: 71 tak, 4.5 TFL, 1 sac, 2 INT
DE Perry Ganci: 64 tak, 9 TFL, 4 sac
LB Brandon Lairy: 60 tak, 4.5 TFL, 1.5 sac, 1 INT
LB Eli Ennis: 45 tak, 10 TFL, 2.5 sac
DT Zack Bernard: 43 tak, 6 TFL, 0.5 sac
CB Jordan Jackson: 36 tak, 3 TFL
    K Gavin Lasseigne: 10/16 FG, 21/22 PAT

Week 2 - Sep 9 - vs Texas A&M-Commerce - Win

Texas A&M-Commerce (5-6, 3-3 Southland) is entering their 2nd season of FCS football and will be looking to build off of a respectable inaugural season under first year Head Coach Clint Dolezel. The Lions were picked to finish 6th in the Southland Conference preseason poll.

The Lions return some key players from a season ago at QB, RB, WR, TE and 3 of 5 starting OL. But their big play WR left the team. Defensively the Lions lost a lot to graduation, including 3 of their top 4 tacklers, but returned 2 starters on the DL and 3 DBs. On special teams TAMUC returns their K, P and LS.
Notable returners:
  • QB Eric Rodriguez: 117/186, 1523 yds, 16 TD, 6 INT, 77 car, 227 yds
RB Reggie Branch: 61 car, 402 yds, 5 TD
WR Jaden Proctor: 35 rec, 398 yds, 2 TD
WR Keith Miller: 17 rec, 183 yds
DB Daryion Taylor: 6 tak, 6 TFL, 1.5 sac, 2 INT
FS Max Epps: 37 tak, 2.5 TFL, 2 INT
CB Kendall Paul: 36 tak, 5 TFL, 1 INT
NT Leon Young: 26 tak, 5 TFL, 2.5 sac
DE Clifford Funderburk: 21 tak, 5 TFL, 3 sac
    K Emmanuel Adagbon: 5/7 FG, 37/39 PAT

Week 3 - Sep 16 - at Stanford - Loss

Stanford (3-9, 1-8 Pac 12) hit the reset button in the offseason and poached Troy Taylor from the Hornets to lead their resurgence. Amidst the backdrop of the implosion of the Pac 12 and an unknown conference affiliation future, Head Coach Troy Taylor is tasked with rebuilding a once prominent Cardinal program. While I think the Cardinal pull off the win in this one, it is certainly a winnable game if the bounces go the Hornets way.

Offensively, the Cardinal lost the top players from their passing game and the best returning receiver being a TE. They do return their top two RBs and 2 starting OL. Defensively, Stanford only returns one of their top 5 tacklers and were hit hard by graduation. They return 2 starters at DL and a starting S and NB. On special teams they return their K and LS.
Notable returners:
  • RB Casey Filkins: 122 car, 478 yds, 4 TD, 17 rec, 205 yds, 1 TD
RB EJ Smith: 30 car, 206 yds, 3 TD, 8 rec, 63 yds, 1 TD
TE Benjamin Yurosek: 26 rec, 418 yds, 4 TD
LB David Bailey: 46 tak, 8.5 TFL, 2.5 sac
    S Alaka’i Gilman: 38 tak, 2 TFL, 1 INT
DB Omari Porter: 6 tak, 1 INT
    K Joshua Karty: 18/18 FG, 24/25 PAT

Week 4 - Sep 23 - at Idaho - Win

Idaho (7-5, 6-2 BSC) is coming off of a stellar season that saw an opening round loss in the playoffs. The Vandals will be looking to continue moving the program in a positive direction in Head Coach Jason Eck’s 3rd season at the helm. The Vandals return a loaded roster and are looking to make a run at the BSC Title and a run in the playoffs and were picked to finish 5th in the BSC coaches poll.

Offensively the Vandals return all of their explosive players. There are returning starters at QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, and 3 starters on the OL. The Vandals should be the top offense in the BSC. Defensively a lot left from the starting front 7 but return a lot of experience in the secondary as 3 of their top 5 tacklers are back. The Vandals return 2 DTs, 1 LB, and 3 DBs. On special teams their K/P and LS return.
Notable returners:
  • QB Gevano McCoy: 204/298, 2719 yds, 27 TD, 7 INT, 77 car, 227 yds
RB Anthony Woods: 149 car, 872 yds, 3 TD
RB Elisha Cummings: 91 car, 442 yds, 4 TD, 14 rec, 137 yds, 2 TD
WR Hayden Hatten: 83 rec, 1209 yds, 16 TD
WR Jermaine Jackson: 54 rec, 1049 yds, 5 TD
LB Mathias Bertram: 74 tak, 1 TFL
DB Tommy McCormick: 61 tak, 1.5 TFL, 4 INT
CB Marcus Harris: 53 tak, 2.5 TFL, 2 INT
NB Murvin Kenion III: 36 tak, 2.5 TFL, 4 INT
DT Ben Bertram: 26 tak, 3.5 TFL, 1 sac
    K/P Ricardo Chavez: 15/20 FG, 48/48 PAT

Week 5 - Sep 30 - vs Northern Arizona - Win

Northern Arizona (3-8, 2-6 BSC) is looking to bounce back in Head Coach Chris Ball’s 4th season at the helm. NAU’s 2022 season included 4 losses by 3 points or less. The Lumberjacks were picked to finish 9th in the BSC coaches poll.

Offensively, the Lumberjacks return 2 of their top 3 WRs, RB and 1 starting OL. Defensively, the Jacks return 2 DL, 2 LB, and 3 DBs, which includes 4 of their top 6 tacklers from last season. On special teams, NAU returns their P and LS.
Notable returners:
  • RB Draycen Hall: 133 car, 546 yds, 2 TD, 50 rec, 344 yds, 1 TD
WR Coleman Owen: 62 rec, 690 yds, 4 TD
WR Jamal Glaspie: 37 rec, 435 yds, 1 TD
    S Kamdan Hightower: 63 tak, 0.5 TFL, 0.5 sac
LB Jhasi Wilson: 63 tak, 5.5 TFL, 2 sac
LB Heston Lameta: 62 tak, 5 TFL, 2 sac
DL Eloi Kwete: 50 tak, 11 TFL, 7 sac

Week 6 - Oct 7 - Bye

Week 7 - Oct 14 - at Northern Colorado - Win

Northern Colorado (3-8, 2-6 BSC) hit the reset button this offseason and made a stellar hire by bringing in proven winner Ed Lamb as Head Coach. Coach Lamb has 8 years of head coaching experience in the BSC and is coming into UNC after serving as assistant head coach at BYU. The Bears were picked to finish 10th in the BSC coaches poll.

On offense, the Bears have a respectable QB to build around and return 3 of their top 5 receivers from a season ago and 1 starter on OL. Defensively, UNC returns 5 of their top 6 tacklers and 2 DL, 3 LBs and 1 DB that were starters last season. At special teams UNC returns their K.
Notable returners:
  • QB Jacob Sirmon: 52/93, 595 yds, 4 TD, 2 INT
WR Zain Zinicola: 38 rec, 386 yds, 2 TD
WR Ty Arrington: 35 rec, 369 yds, 4 TD
TE Alec Pell: 26 rec, 253 yds, 1 TD
FS Jordan Knapke: 90 tak, 2.5 TFL
DE Nick Norris: 68 tak, 7 TFL, 1 sac
LB Vincent King: 66 tak, 2.5 TFL, 2 sac, 1 INT
LB Tama Tuitele: 60 tak, 4 TFL
SS Dustin Johnson: 54 tak, 2 TFL, 1 INT
    LB David Hoage: INJ
    K Hunter Green: 1/4 FG, 13/13 PAT

Week 8 - Oct 21 - vs Montana State - Win

Montana State (12-2, 8-0 BSC) is heavily favored to pick up where they left off and win the BSC title this season in Head Coach Brent Vigen’s 3rd season. This year the Bobcats have their sights set on Frisco as they lost in the semifinals last season.

The Bobcats return all of their rushing production from their BSC title sharing team from last season. Both QBs and their leading RB are back as well as a slough of others. MSU did lose their top 2 WRs, but return both of their TEs and all 5 starters on OL. Defensively MSU returns 3 of their top 5 tacklers including all 4 starters on DL, 1 LB, 1 FS, 1 CB. On special teams, MSU returns their LS.
Notable returners:
  • QB Tommy Mellott: 128/210, 1698 yds, 10 TD, 4 INT, 167 car, 1061 yds, 13 TD
    QB Sean Chambers: 43/71, 623 yds, 8 TD, 4 INT, 131 car, 845 yds, 19 TD
RB Elijah Elliot: 118 car, 726 yds, 1 TD, 13 rec, 117 yds
RB Lane Sumner: 72 car, 433 yds
WR Clevan Thomas Jr: 22 rec, 333 yds, 3 TD
TE Derryk Snell: 22 rec, 324 yds, 3 TD
TE Treyton Pickering: 19 rec, 311 yds, 1 TD
LB Danny Uliulakepa: 81 tak, 4 TFL, 2 INT
LB Nolan Askelson: 64 tak, 3 TFL, 1 sac, 1 INT
CB Simeon Woodard: 49 tak, 4 TFL, 1 INT
DT Sebastian Valdez: 44 tak, 10 TFL, 7.5 sac

Week 9 - Oct 28 - vs Idaho State - Win

Idaho State (1-10, 1-7 BSC) hit the reset button this offseason and brought in Cody Hawkins at Head Coach for yet another Bengal rebuild effort. The Bengals were picked to finish 12th in the BSC coaches poll.

Offensively, the Bengals return some talent from a young team last season, but lost their top WR to the portal. They return starters at QB, RB, 2 WRs, and 1 OL. Defensively, ISU returns 3 of their top 6 tacklers and starters at DT, DE, S, and 2 CBs. The Bengals special teams will be replacing everyone.
Notable returners:
  • QB Hunter Hays: 125/197, 1251 yds, 5 TD, 6 INT, 71 car, 238 yds, 1 TD
RB Raiden Hunter: 93 car, 451 yds, 1 TD
WR Cyrus Wallace: 33 rec, 249 yds
WR Chedon James: 28 rec, 247 yds, 1 TD
    S Calvin Pitcher: 62 tak
DT David Rowe: 47 tak, 6.5 TFL, 2 sac
CB Josh Alford: 47 tak, 1 TFL, 1 INT

Week 10 - Nov 4 - at Montana - Win

Montana (8-5, 4-4 BSC) is looking to “return to dominance” for yet another year under Head Coach Hauck who is in his 5th year of his second tenure in the position. The Griz have quite a few voids to fill following a season in which they snuck into the playoffs and snagged an opening round win before getting bounced by NDSU. Montana was picked to finish 6th in the BSC coaches poll.

Offensively the Grizzlies graduated nearly the entirety of their passing attack but returned their leading rushers. UM returns starters a RB, WR, TE, and all 5 OL. Defensively, UM only returns 2 of their top 6 tacklers from last season. The defense returns 5 starters at NT, LB, CB, NB, S. At special teams, the Griz return their K and LS.
Notable returners:
  • QB Kris Brown: 37/66, 319 yds, 1 TD
RB Nick Ostmo: 132 car, 743 yds, 7 TD
RB Isiah Childs: 52 car, 299 yds, 4 TD
TE Cole Grossman: 28 rec, 397 yds, 5 TD
WR Aaron Fontes: 35 rec, 384 yds, 2 TD
LB Levi Janacaro: 87 tak, 10 TFL, 1.5 sac
NB Nash Fouch: 71 tak, 3 TFL, 1 INT
NT Alex Gubner: 44 tak, 7 TFL, 3.5 sac
    K Nico Ramos: 11/14 FG, 46/50 PAT

Week 11 - Nov 11 - vs Cal Poly - Win

Cal Poly (2-9, 1-7 BSC) will hit the reset button under experienced Head Coach Paul Wulff after Beau Baldwin quit after last season. There is a lot returning from last season's roster, unfortunately for the Mustangs they face a murderers row of a schedule. The Mustangs were picked to finish 11th in the BSC coaches poll.

Offensively, the Mustangs will have an experienced QB to build around, however much of the WRs departed with only 1 of the top 5 returning. Returning starters include QB, RB, WR, and 5 OL. Defensively CP returns starters at DE, DT, NT, 2 LB, and 2 S. On special teams the Mustangs return their K and LS.
Notable returners:
  • QB Spencer Brasch: 206/348, 2604 yds, 19 TD, 13 INT
RB Shakobe Harper: 87 car, 307 yds, 1 TD
WR Logan Booher: 22 rec, 237 yds, 2 TD
LB David Meyer: 85 tak, 7 TFL, 4.5 sac, 1 INT
S Brian Dukes Jr: 61 tak, 1.5 TFL, 2 INT
    LB Je’kon Jones: 42 tak, 3 TFL
DE Elijah Ponder: 36 tak, 6 TFL, 1.5 sac
    K Jaden Ohlsen: 4/8 FG, 31/31 PAT

Week 12 - Nov 18 - at Causeway - Win

They (6-5, 5-3 BSC) are looking to make a playoff appearance after missing out last season following their 3rd straight Causeway loss and 4th in 5 years. They look to get back in the hunt in Head Coach Dan Hawkins’ 7th season. They were picked to finish 2nd in the BSC coaches poll.

Offensively they return a stellar QB and his top top target from last season. They did lose arguably one of the best RBs in the BSC last season and 2 of their top 3 receiving producers along with more than half of their starting OL. Their returning starters on offense are at QB, 3 WR, and 2 OL. Defensively, they graduated 3 of their top 5 tacklers but return some key players and are stacked up front. They return starters at DT, NT, DE, 2 LB, CB, and S. All of their specialists graduated after last season.
Notable returners:
  • QB Miles Hastings: 256/367, 3048 yds, 20 TD, 6 INT
RB Lan Larison: 65 car, 486 yds, 4 TD, 25 rec, 335 yds, 1 TD
WR CJ Hutton: 47 rec, 506 yds, 4 TD
WR Justin Poerio: 16 rec, 316 yds, 2 TD
    S Rex Connors: 92 tak, 4 TFL, 5 INT
LB Teddye Buchanan: 43 tak, 3 TFL, 3 INT
LB Nick Eaton: 34 tak, 5.5 TFL

While I would characterize the Stanford game as a PROBABLE loss, I wouldn't exactly lock that in. Stanford has lost to an FCS team exactly once: the Manure Pile in 2005. (I took it all the way back to the I-A/I-AA split in 1978.) We can't let the Manure Pile have THAT up on us, right?
