Did anyone check out the Pig Bowl at Hornet Stadium today? Today was the 10th anniversary of the decision to change the original Police vs. Sheriff concept to Guns and Hoses.
The combined Sac County and Sac Metro Fire Dogs opened a big lead early and held on despite a furious Law Enforcement Hogs comeback to win 39-28. There were a few Hornet alumni on the Hogs roster, including star receiver Jeff Kool, who caught several key passes today, and linebacker Charles Thorntona. While not in the game, quarterback/WR Scott Towne and linebacker Richard Van Over were in attendance. The comeback was fueled by a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown.
The big draw for me, of course (since I didn't know about the presence of Kool and Thorntona until I saw the rosters upon entering), was Hog kicker Jennifer Bloom, who has retired from the Sirens following a stellar career there upon graduating from the Sheriff's Academy. Bloom was perfect on all four PAT attempts. The first was fortunate given that it was partially blocked, doinked the crossbar, and snuck through. There was no question, however, about the others. Her third PAT (south end zone) forced the shaggers to retreat to field it, and her fourth (north end zone) nearly found its way into the beer booth. Bloom missed out on a chance for a short field goal when the offensive coordinator eschewed that on 4th and 5 at the Dog 12 to go for it, only to see the quarterback almost literally planted into the turf like a potted plant.
Comcast and a few other media outlets are showing the game on tape delay tonight and tomorrow.
