3rd Down % Defense

With the brutal OOC schedule, and the offense-centric conference we play in, it is an uphill battle to reduce the 3rd down conversion percentage of other teams. Additionally, I have felt in the past couple of years, we've been poor in that regard, even with the deck stacked against us. We just didn't defend 3rd down well.

Statistically, we are well in the bottom half of the FCS. That being said, we have been continually climbing the ladder in this area. I just checked it tonight, and love to see who we just passed in this stat! :o

75 Eastern Wash. (Big Sky) 10 9-1 63 159 0.396
76 Alabama A&M (Southwestern) 10 4-6 50 126 0.397
77 North Dakota St. (MVFC) 10 9-1 59 148 0.399

For comparison, last year, we were 121 of 123 teams in the FCS, allowing an almost 50% conversion rate. The two teams below us only won one game last year.

For what it's worth, which I think is a lot, considering our schedule, this is our best performance as far back as we can see on the ncaa.com stats page.

Wow! Great catch! Love seeing the improvements this year. Next years defense seems like it will become even more stout. This is a very special year and if we can reload at wide receiver (as is tradition), we will be a truly terrifying team to play.

Rjones61,
I am sure you saw a few of our WR in the game. #7 Nic Sblendorio, #14 Jason Williams, #87 Dre' Sonte Dorton, plus #80 Zach Eagle, #81 Stu Stiles, #22 Nsimba Webster should be ready very soon from his injured shoulder. #37 Kyle Olson-Urbon who redshirt this year, #82-Xavier James from Arizona, who also redshirt, #88 Terrence Grady who played as a Freshman, and Redshirt, along with Roy Ebong from NY, another redshirt. We will be ready for next year, and just think what we will bring in I February, Signing Day. (Scarry). They are all damn great. Go Eagles!! Vic Wallace

Terrific news. Stats have gotten better throughout the season as it should be given the relative strength of our opponents has declined. All in the natural order in this dog eat dog world :-)

Been thinking about this stat since it was posted and wondering if the outcome of the end of the season would have been any different if Adams would have stayed.

Did Adams play defense?

There's a lot of "scope creep" on these topics occassionally.

I know he didn't play defense but I know that confidence seemed to be down last year ...especially at the end of the year and was wondering if you all thought him being the QB down the stretch would have extended some possessions and given the Defense some confidence to take some risks.
