4-2-5

Just wondering what everyone thinks about the 4-2-5 defense coach Sears has installed? I think you have to have the right personal to run it well. Have to be big up front and quick in the defensive backfield. It seemed to work this spring, but then they were facing a banged up offense. Discuss.

To me it seems to make total sense. There are many programs in the Big Sky that run a spread type of offense, and last year it seemed we had line backers trying to cover wide outs or converted tight ends. No dis on the line backers, but they were just not fast enough to stay with many of those guys. Now the line backers can mainly focus on run support and don't have to worry too much about pass coverage.

If you have fast linebackers, quick and strong lineman, you can run a 4-3-4, but like pirate pointed out, our LBs kept getting beat last year. I don't think Sears will totally go away from a 4-3-4, but I like the concept of the 4-2-5 more. It does put more pressure on our line to stop the run, and I worry if we have the players in the secondary talented enough to limit opposing teams passing games. However, I did like what I saw in the spring.

The defensive system you use as a foundation isn't nearly as important as the players deploying it. I have always felt that there are a lot of inovations that can be used to disrupt the flow and blocking paterns of the offences we see. I like a defense that is unpredictable and can't be read by QBs. Why not shift in and out of 42s, 33s, 24s, 43s, 52s, 44s, 25s, 23s, and what ever else makes them scratch their heads. As long as you are covering the running lanes, containing the edge, preshuring the passer, and covering recievers, then disrupt them, stop them or turn them over.

Championships are made of defense. Defense, at iys best, disrupts, confuses, and deflates an offence.

Spring was good, but the offense was depleted on the line. Last season our LB's were getting smoked, and that hurt alot. This year, I hope the Dline can hold their own; as long as we have 8 healthy and 12 ready to go, we will be fine. As soon as we start losing the horses, hard to pony up. Speed kills, and our secondary better be quick.

Hi, guys,

Will see you guys in September! Would be glad to see you guys running the 4-2-5 defense! We know nothing about it. ;-)

Welcome to the board McNeese72, looking forward to the matchup as well, it's been a long time since we played a team not of the formerly great west conference for our OOC for once, and our first game against you guys since 92. You coming up to Ogden for the game?

Yes. Should be on the team charter if they are still wanting me to take pictures for the McNeese Athletic Website.

We've have run the 4-2-5 as our base defense since 1990. We vary it in certain circumstances, though.

I think you're gonna give up a fair amount of points this year, at least 25 a game. At least that was EWU's experience with Sears and the 4-2-5.

Did they give up so many points because of the system or the personnel? What do you think if you had to choose?
