50 best in 50 yrs: who is #1?

there have been a lot of great players at wsu. the top 50 list was fun to read. is there a clear top 5 and in what order? was i the only one that thought bullinger and cravens should have been there? maybe joe didnt want to?

joe is 1 of 2 coaches in big sky history to go undefeated. bull made the 1,000/500 club and was a first teamer. to me that is automatic top 50. i really enjoyed the list wsu compiled and i dont want to insult a single player on the list but about 10 had never made first team, 2 played only 1 season. another reason maybe some would say is it wasn't all about the stats, but for me thats another reason to add bull.

i am sure it wasn't that easy to make the list. + was it harder to get 1st team back then? was it only 5 spots?

so anyway, my reseason for this thread, feel free to ignore the above...

who is #1?

one way i like to think about it besides stats and accolades/trophies is who would you want to give the ball to when your down by 1 with 10 seconds left in the biggest game of the year?

willie?
jimmy d?
harold?
eddie?
bruce?
jermaine?
dame?
bam?
hamilton?
someone else?

for me willie and bruce pretty much get dis'd since i never saw them play (sorry). but i have seen all the stars from 1990-2013. i have seen just about every game from 2002-2013, i saw a number of games during the show/thrill era and i saw games occasionally between 1990-1996. the only reason i saw any games from 90-96 was because of current wsu head xcountry/distance coach paul pilkington. i am so so glad he used to take me to games with his kids in the 90s!

to make this long post longer....I would hand the ball to boyette, no offense dame and harold.

boyette was an amazing weber player, ok that isn't selling my point. boyette was an unbelievable play maker. has there been a weber player or big sky player better at driving to the basket, i cant even imagine there could be. his ability to get to the free throw line can't be replicated for those who never saw him play.

he attempted 622 ft's which is insane since most wsu players attempted less in their career than jermaine made, 486. lillard has 600 attempts but he had an extra 9 games. both played 3 seasons. had jermaine played 4 yrs he likely would own the big sky record attempts. but there are a lot of big sky what ifs had many other players played more or injured less.

boyette's senior yr they called him a point-post. he would drive in and a lot of times post people up. he was 6 foot 1. :thumb: he could always get to the hole and draw a foul.

now if we need a 3 pointer i would go with dame or jimmy D, bam, johnny.

50 yr list and their stats/achievements:

i dont think i can do an exact order of the very best. here is what i think it should be but maybe i would rearrange it except #1.

1. willie
2. dame
3. bruce
4. jermaine
5. harold

*mvp award didn't start until 1979.
the only award that goes back to the start of the big sky is coach of the year, thats it.

maybe i have a biased opinion. my 2 favorite wsu players ive seen are boyette and dame. i cant think of 2 players that were more proud to be a wsu wildcat publicly than those 2.

Yeah...I think that is about accurate. Bob Davis, Jimmie Watts, Al Hamilton, Jimmy D, and Ruben or Rico would round out the top 10 in my opinion.

Top 5 out of the top 50?

Great topic. This is my first post after I was self-exiled after posting some stupid things several years ago when Weber lost to Montana in the Big Sky Championship.

I'm proud to say that I stood next to Jimmy DeGraffenried on Saturday night while he was talking to Coach A in the stands, just to size him up. He's about the exact same height as me, which is a joke because he was listed at 6'6'' when he played and I'm only 6'4''. So he either shrunk, or the roster was padded. Anyway, it was depressing because he managed to do a whole lot more with his 6'4" than I did with mine. I didn't have the nards to say hi or anything though. Man, I suck.

Here are my top 5's, using guys I saw play:

Overall talent:
1. Damian Lillard
2. Harold Arceneaux
3. Jimmy DeGraffenried
4. Jermaine Boyette
5. Ruben Nembhard

If I needed someone to hit a game-winning trey:
1. Ryan Cuff (Pure clutch. I was at a game at the old Delta center against Utah State back in 1995 or 1996 where he hit a baseline jumper to send the game into OT. Also, an amazing Utah high school player. Read Shawn Bradley's terrible biography for some of his legendary high school exploits.)
2. Harold Arceneaux
3. Damian Lillard
4. Jermaine Boyette
5. Jimmy DeGraffenried

I

jimmy,

this is a common theme in basketball where you exaggerate the roster. the question is, what is the point? i have noticed over the years that im usually taller than most of our players listed between 6-2 to 6-4 and i am 6-2 or less. lol i swear some of these 6-1, 6-2 guys arent even 6 foot.

so its confusing when you see the rosters then when the teams show up your like some of these guys arent on the team anymore? oh wait, no they just shrunk.

i would like to know how talhad4steals sizes up standing next to talhad3steals.
