60/40, Basketball/Football

Podcast interview with Brandon Garside over on the Football forum. Every other school's media podcast has started with football and seemed to only include a brief discussion of basketball, almost as an afterthought. It was interesting to me that today's podcast, with Garside, started out with basketball, and stayed with it for more than 60% of the time allotted. The football discussion was like an afterthought. They did mention that football seems to be picking up some momentum. Maybe this year's football team can create a little buzz in the community. We will see. For now, we are still predominantly a basketball school. :coffee:

Weber has and most likely always will be a basketball school. It's who we are.

Having said that, It wouldn't hurt my feelings if the Football program started to become a larger part of our identity. Lets face it, we will never be a Montana, but there isn't any reason we cant begin to outshine the rest of this conference. All we need is a few (more than two) playoff appearances in a row with a Big Sky title thrown into the mix here and there and we can really change that outlook.

I've really enjoyed Colter's podcasts. In the future, it would be cool to meet him and chat Big Sky Sports. That will have to wait. Hopefully, when he makes his way to Ogden for the MSU vs. Weber game in October. Of course, I've been a huge fan of Coach Hill, Jon Ogelsby, and Garsides interviews, but the rest have been informative.

I'll agree with Olds on Garside's interview. I like how Brandon presented himself. He did a really solid job. He talked about Weber State athletics with insight and relevance. No matter, I really thought Ogelsby's was the best. He had some really great insights. My favorite part was when they spoke about Reno. Jon stated, that the conference can only do the bidding of the members. If the conference's schools want something, they tell the conference, and the conference goes out and gets it done. I've heard numerous times if Weber or Montana were against Reno, then it wouldn't have happened.

Anyway, back on subject, I really like Brandon's interview too. It isn't shocking to me that the majority of the conversation is about basketball. Weber is a basketball school. Look at, on this forum, the disparity between basketball and football posts; it is 2 to 1. The Dee is bigger than a handful of conference members FOOTBALL stadiums. It is what we love as Weber State fans. We all want to see football do well, but we all expect basketball to do well.

Garside was very positive with regard to department. My only beef with athletics is that they don't realize that growing a fan base takes a plan and that when you grow the fan base you generate revenue. With additional revenue imagine what could be accomplished by the department.
