8-1 Misleading Record

Of the 9 teams played by the Wildcats only 2 have a winning record. They are UMASS @ 6-4 and Washington State at 7-2. The overall won lost record of the 9 teams combined is 27-47. Personally, I looked at Weber's 8-0 record and thought that they were a better team than they really are. That record was built largely off of sub-par teams and gave me a false hope that we were a greatly improved team this year. Now, it seems to me that we are an improved team because we have a larger number of scorers, we play better team defense and we have a lot more depth that Rahe doesn't know how to use. He is stuck on playing 8 guys and can't seem to manage a larger number of guys who get real playing time.

I think we are good enough to compete for the Big Sky title, but probably will fold at the end of the year because of over use of the starting 5. I think there are at least three teams in the Big Sky, Montana, Northern Colorado and Southern Utah who we will have a hard time beating especially on the road. They will contend for the title along with Weber. I think our chances of winning the regular season title are good, but seriously doubt that we can win the playoffs and make it into the NCAA's.

I hope I am wrong and that Weber can get back on a winning track against USU, BYU and Fresno. If they can win at least 2 of these 3 games then I will up my optimism about the team. To do so they have got to come prepared to compete, unlike what they did at WSU. That game got completely out-of-control and it seemed to me that we gave up in the second half. Give the Cougars credit, they played better than they have in most of their games this year. I think their last two games against us and against USC they really stepped their game up.

I agree with your point about playing more in the rotation. We can go 9-10 deep.
The Wazzu game exposed a weakness in our big men. We have average players in these positions and the Wazzu team exploited this weakness.

I don’t think we are in trouble in the Sky. We will struggle with teams that have strong big men.

I agree with that assessment. BSC wise, our big men are just fine and maybe some of the better ones. I think our guards are the best in the BSC when they are hitting. On off nights they look fairly average. I think Tew will end up being one of our best big men in a while. I think that we will be looking for some big men similar to what Washington State had. We need more guys like Jones, but bigger. Getting Dockery was great but he projects to be a guard. I hear he can play and guard anywhere from 1 to 3. We need athletes like him that are 4s and 5s. We've tried on a couple of guys like that, but lost to some P5 programs. I think we just have to keep trying. Even if we just get one such player, it would take us one step closer to where we all want to be. I believe that we can do it. I don't want to believe anything else. :coffee:

we are about to face the best big man we will see all year, or at least in what remains, bean. bean is high on the national scoring list, is like 3rd best national rebounder and its in the top 10 or top 25 i think even for steals. he is highly experienced and old. if i am not mistaken he was recruited by stew, not tim d. thats how long. he will be impossible to stop, you can only try to slow him down.

my thots on 8-1....we only played 4 games at home out of the 9. winning any games away from the dee are good no matter who we beat. we dont have the luxury of playing 10 ooc home games like bigger schools. but like was said, we will find out plenty in the next week. i think the x factor in why we can compete in these tough coming games is our D. we arent a good rebounding team but we can make up for it with forcing turnovers. we have 5 players in the big sky's top 7 for steals thus far. that is not at all a normal stat for wsu and far from typical. that will go a long way in big sky play.

I don't post much here in the basketball forum, but am excited about the next three games. I will, hopefully, be at all three. Like always though, I am concerned about Coach Rahe playing the right guys at the right times. He had the horses to compete better against WSU, but wouldn't use them. Admittedly, I don't know what is happening inside the program, but if the guys can play, let them play. Playing 7 guys 30+ a game is crazy. He has 13 scholarships, and from what I can see, out of those 13 scholarships, 10 are reliable assets. Just my opinion.

Mine as well, but it's been a part of Rahe's style of coaching & his stubbornness to a fault is well known. Hope it doesn't cause the usual end of season worn out meltdown. :ohno:

We've already experienced the usual beatdown once (or more) a year...the Washington St. game...so the next 3 OOC games hopefully will not be blow-outs. Here's hoping it will at least be competitive games, & then it's Big Sky regular season play, or as it's known now days, the "play-in games to determine seeding for the all-important postseason conference tourney"!!!
