8 penalties 65 yards

8 drive killing, points off the board penalties. Too Many!! It is going to cost us some game.
FYI- Today NDSU had 2 penalties for 20 yards

I don't remember as many stupid, self-inflicted penalties yesterday as we had against MSU, Wazzu, or NAU. The only really bad penalty that sticks out was that downfield holding call on the first drive. Plus, we had reserves moving in and out from the 3rd quarter on, so sometimes you have younger guys who aren't quite familiar with game speed.

I feel a lot better about yesterday's play than the earlier games.

Eastern is not NDSU !
You're right, they have 6 nat'l championships and we have 1
In 2018 NDSU has zero National Championships, and EWU has Zero. I believe that playing time and winning play on the field with appropriate "educational assistance" will eliminate the "stupid" penalties and turnovers in upcoming contests. I love the effective sideline chair meetings our coaches providing inspiration, discussing problems, complimenting good play, and moments of mental and physical relaxation in lieu of players just standing around or sitting when off the field.

Let's start keeping track and evaluating offense penalties and defense penalties. Offensive penalties kill scoring drives, and I hate those that wipe out a first down or false starts in the red zone. Smart defensive penalties can save otherwise touchdowns. I appreciate those. Third down defensive penalties are flat stupid and allow the opponent to advance when we had them stopped. Eliminating any and all penalties where the offense occurred due to loss of self control/discipline should be a priority of all coaches and team captains. Observation: Teams that commit high numbers of offenses are going to scrutinized and penalties called more often.

File this under "be careful what you wish for."

The penalty situation was good, but without question, this was Eastern's worst game in a long while.

Against the best team since the Cougars. I thought the D was awesome, and the O played pretty well considering against one of the countries best D's. Sure we all could display our keyboard expertise and second guess things like play calling, but there certainly was no lack of effort. It was a war and our guys were working their arses off!

That felt like a prerequisite for a playoff game. Our D is ready for playoffs now but offense currently is not ready. This is now in the hands of coaching to get team into the playoffs and do whatever it takes to get the offense ready for said playoffs.

Like it. Coaches will learn from this, especially Reeder. Feels like a rocket ship about to take off assuming everyone heals up.

Defense played great, no question about that.

But there's no way you can sell me on the offense playing "pretty well." We were awful in every sense. Yeah, Weber had a great defense, but we couldn't do some things like find receivers when they were open or hit the right holes with the backs. They were content bringing pressure in almost any situation and we couldn't distribute the ball or pick up the blitz. It was a complete farce on offense. I can't imagine anyone, players or coaches, is remotely feeling like they played pretty well.

Eagles have been clicking and improving. Aside from WSU being a good team, and agreeing with you we did not play well; what do you attribute to your alleged Eastern's being "awful in every sense"?

I don't think there's an easy answer to that. If I could figure those things out, I'd be getting paid big bucks as a top level coach. Here's my opinion:

Having as many players down as we did certainly was a factor. But we had many of those same guys out against Southern Utah and scored 55. Against Weber, the execution wasn't there. Someone else made mention of this, but the RPO/ read plays were misread continuously. There was a fourth down play where the QB didn't know what to do and tried handing the ball to the RB after he'd already ran past him and we got tackled for a loss. On a team that likes to show a run-pass option, both the running and throwing game suffers when you can't properly read what the defense is doing.

On top of that, our receivers really struggled to get separation. There were some plays we had guys running free and either couldn't get the pass off due to pressure or we went the wrong place with the ball. And when everything did work properly, we couldn't get a completion. On the last drive, we had Custer make a quick block in a hybrid screen route and roll off into open space with both linebackers cleared out in their coverages. The play should've gone for 20 yards, but we couldn't complete a 10 foot pass.

The only real philosophical issue I saw is that it felt like we never really committed to running the ball. Maybe with the injuries on the offensive line, the staff just didn't feel comfortable doing it.

I thought the same thing and if they had said at half, we are going to run the ball, read option, sweep, reverse so no matter who is on the OL, let's fire out and put a hat on hat, Weber would have given it up. Didn't use the RB's well in the passing game either from out of the backfield. We don't know what the game plan going in was and actually watching the game didn't make it obvious; hence my frustration. No one quit, everyone fought. Next.

That's personal training and discipline matched by "team-managed" discipline, a whole lot easier accomplished when plays are going as charted, and you're ahead. "Negative" penalties are indicators of frustration, and frustration interferes with sound thinking, correct reactions, and positive production. Worse, penalties increase frustration and result more penalties unless teammates or coaches defuse the frustration during a substitution or time out. Eagle players, teams and coaches earned an A-PLUS Saturday in penalty prevention. Let's replace this blog subject line with a positive title reflecting Saturday's positive
result. Go Eags!
