A good find in the vault

Look what the cat just drug in. This article is awesome. I was hoping it would mention Primo Peacock, but it gives us a good look at the Weber team 34 years ago. BYU was ducking us back then, freaking hilarious.

That was the awesomest thing I've ever read!!! The wins over Idaho State in Poky are fun, but I can only imagine the wave at all four corners of the court!!! Yee uh!!!

I guess calling some one a hot dog was some serious trash talk in 1980. What if our student section wears shirts that say Troy Huff is hot dog next week?

Awww...those were the days! McCarthy's kids, it was an exciting and fun era, in the Big Sky & instate. A sparkling new arena, the DEC, made us proud & hosted some great NCAA tourney action. A good find indeed. :-D Bring out the "hot dog" shirts!

Story was written by one of my Northwestern classmates, Anthony Cotton. I remember Mattos' last visit to the Dome in 1980 -- there was a lot of "energy" around that game, but most of it was provided by the Wildcats, unfortunately. A lot has changed in 34 years, hasn't it? Calling somebody a hot dog.Topics and writing styles in Sports Illustrated. And the size of crowds in Big Sky arenas.

Tell the truth Bengal, were you wearing one of the "Mattos is a hot dog t-shirts"? I made my first visit to the dome for a Weber vs. ISU game in 1984 (I think). It was a rockus crowd. We wore dark jackets over our purple to lessen the heckling. I remember a couple fans giving Aaron McCarthy the business. They were calling him a daddy's boy. We lost a really close game that year, pretty sure it came down to the wire. It was a really long walk to the car. I remember thinking that the dome was a much worse place to watch a game than the Dee Center.

Looking at the article, recalls different times in the NCAA.

Recently saw on ESPN re-play of 30 for 30 a recap of the North Carolina State days with Jim Valvano as coach, and the victory in NCAA Tourney over Ralph Sampson and Univ of Virginia.....played at the Dee Event Center at Weber State. The game was exciting, and was great to see the Dee in its earlier days.

Sad, most NCAA final 8/final 4/ championships are now played in domed football arenas.

No, I'm quite sure I was in the nosebleed section, looking down and watching the students have fun heckling Mattos -- and Mattos taking great pleasure in dissecting the Bengal defense -- giving it right back to the crowd.

The passion present in Big Sky rivalries was much greater then. I remember also sitting in the nosebleeds when Idaho and Orlando Lightfoot came to town. There were 7000 people in the Dome that night -- people were literally hanging from the rafters. The Vandals won that night, too, but it was a helluva game. And of course I remember being in the Dome the night the "brawl" broke out with Weber in 1993, I think it was. ISU won the game and the brawl, but Herb Williams got suspended for the Big Sky tourney and we got beat in the first round. So much more passion, so much more fun.

Hahah...the Brawl at the Holt! A clear example of how much passion and fire there is between Weber and Idaho State. Missed days...

It is too bad that students don't have allegiance to their schools. Just this week on Weber's campus I have called out four students wearing other schools gear. Pathetic if you ask me.

By the way...NICE FIND 02!! Great read...

The ISU game is on Presidents Day this year. We will have plenty of time to make the trip since most will have the day off. Who is in?

I'll be there and I am bringing, I believe, a couple of car loads with me. I do know that fly and kilty are coming.

I would love to join the caravan. Is our ticket office going to have some seats available? I tend to like to travel in packs into hostile environments.

I dug even deeper in the vault and turned up this beauty

As usual, the young upstart cannot buy a game with the other schools. Moreover, the Salt Lake Tribune's recent proposal for an eight-team tournament in the new 15,000-seat Salt Palace, involving the four Utah schools and four visitors, was discouraged by the other three—because of Weber. Weber officials claim area coaches purposely neglect them on votes for All-America teams and discriminate against them when considering candidates for the weekly ratings. "They will never give us a ballot on those polls," says Johnson. "They know what it would mean for us to be ranked."

Hmmm...some things never change. Yeah, I'm looking at you Utah! :geek:

By the way, I'm going to be skiing in Sun Valley and am considering making the long drive to the potato cellar on the way home Monday to catch the game. So, please post any info regarding tix, Weber section, etc. I still have a bad taste with the last loss I watched there. Personal redemption is at hand!

Todays gem from the vault relives our awesome win against the BYU cougars. Anyone else remember the bogus foul call on Dan Del Vechio (quite possibly the best last name in WSU basketball history) that sent BYU to the line with one second left?

I do. I can't decide if that was my favorite team or the Bruce Collins one. That was the game where my mild-mannered wife finally turned around and almost "started something" with the obnoxious BYU fans chirping in our ear the entire game. Steve Cleveland > the ahole leading them now. Ron Abeglan > anyone (in my eyes).

Annoying BYU fans? Huh?? Who would have thought? BYU fans are the shinning example of hypocrisy and abject contempt. Some of the worst fans on earth. Yikes!!

Two season's ago I went to the Weber vs. BYU Women's BBALL game. We arrived in the second half (we were bored and that was something to do) and were absolutely shocked to see Weber up. We were sitting behind the scorers table and in front of a handful of BYU fans. I have never experienced anything worse in my life. The BYU fans kept calling our players hoes and Bitches and the like. As always, I was highly impressed with the lack of presence by the Dee Staff who did absolutely nothing. So, I spoke up and said that wasn't appropriate. Some guy in his late 50s came down and wanted to fight me. Ha!! I explained to him what the school supposedly stands for and what its fans should also represent, where upon he took a swing at me. I just pushed him away and walked out. One of the most hilarious experiences in my life. I'll give it to Judkins he turned around a couple of times and looked at his teams fans with a look of incredible disappointment, but he was coaching and didn't say anything. Ridiculous fans...I can't wait to experience their hypocrisy in the ESA. Something to look forward to. Always fun dealing with BYU fans.
